Chlorinated hydrocarbons of some bird species breeding in the inland of Lower Saxony (FRG)

Summary Residues of chlorinated hydrocarbons in eggs and livers of some bird species — Tree Sparrow, House Martin, White Stork, Heron, Rook, Mallard, and further species — are presented. The dependence on place of breeding, food web, and migration is discussed.

     

The development of the sensory organs of the legs in the blowfly,Phormia regina

Summary The development of the sensory neurons of the legs of the blowfly,Phormia regina has been described from the third instar larva to the late pupa using immunohistochemical staining. The leg discs of the third instar larva contain 8 neurons of which 5 come to lie in the fifth tarsomere of the developing leg. Whereas 2 neurons persist at least to the late pupa, the other cells degenerate. The first neurons of gustatory sensilla arise in the fifth tarsomere at about 1.5 h after formation of the puparium. Most of these sensilla, however, appear within a short time period beginning at about 18 h. The femoral chordotonal sensory neurons first appear at the time of formation of the puparium, as a mass of cells situated in the distal femur. During later pupal development 2 groups of these cells come to lie at the femur-trochanter border, where they become the proximal femoral chordotonal organ of the adult; the remaining cells become the distal femoral chordotonal organ. Other scolopidial neurons appear later in development. The nerve pathways of the late pupal leg are established either by the axons of the cells that are present in the larval leg disc or by new outgrowing processes of sensory neurons. In the tibia, the initial direction of new outgrowth differs in different regions of the segment: proximal tibial neurons grow distally, while distal tibial neurons grow initially proximally.     

Characterization of lignin peroxidase-encoding genes from lignin-degrading basidiomycetes

Two closely linked lignin peroxidase (LPO)-encoding genes (lpo) from Phanerochaete chrysosporium were isolated. Nucleotide sequence studies indicated that the two genes are separated by 1.3 kb of flanking DNA and transcribed in opposite directions. Cloned P. chrysosporium lpo gene probes have been shown to hybridize to multiple sequences present in the DNAs of the white-rot fungi, Bjerkandera adusta, Coriolus versicolor and Fomes lignosus, but no hybridization was detected with DNA from Pleurotus ostreatus. Thus, lpo gene families appear to be common in a number of lignin-degrading basidiomycetes, some of which have not yet been shown to produce LPO proteins.     

Changes in the auditory system of locusts (Locusta migratoria and Schistocerca gregaria) after deafferentation

Deafferentation experiments during postembryonic development show morphological and/or physiological changes of receptor fibers and of identified auditory interneurons in the CNS of the locusts Locusta migratoria and Schistocerca gregaria after unilateral ablation of one tympanic organ either in the larva or the adult animal.

Growth characteristics and ion contents of non-selected and salt-selected callus lines of highbush blueberry (Vacdnium corymbosum) cultivars Blue Crop and Denise Blue

Non-selected and sodium chloride selected callus lines of Vacdnium corymbosum L.cv Blue Crop and cv. Denise Blue were grown on media supplemented with 0–100 mM NaCl. For both cultivars, fresh weight and dry weight yields were greater in selected lines on all levels of NaCl. Selected lines of Blue Crop displayed better growth than selected lines of Denise Blue at most concentrations of NaCl. Internal Na⁺ and Cl^– concentrations in selected and non-selected lines of both cultivars increased as external concentration was raised. However, selected lines of Blue Crop and Denise Blue accumulated more Na⁺ and Cl^– than non-selected lines. Selected lines of both cultivars maintained higher levels of K⁺ than non-selected lines on all external NaCl levels. Selected lines of Blue Crop had higher levels of Na⁺ and Cl^– than that of Denise Blue. The results suggest Na⁺ and Cl^– accumulation could be a mechanism allowing better growth in selected lines at moderate salinity levels (50–75 mM NaCl).     

Different numbers of maternal and paternal siblings of cystic fibrosis patients

Summary When 458 parents of children suffering from cystic fibrosis (CF) from all over the German Democratic Republic were interviewed to determine the number of their siblings, it was found that the maternal families had a total of 1369 children and the paternal, 1220. While the fathers of CF patients tended to originate from families with one or two children, more mothers than fathers came from families with three to twelve children (P=0.01). The average number of children in the maternal families was 2.99; in the paternal families, only 2.66. To rule out any methodological errors, sibs of mothers and fathers of various control groups were studied. We found that the number of siblings in these groups was balanced. The differences in our findings are probably due to CF heterozygosity. The underlying mechanism is unknown.     

Hemagglutinating and adherence properties of Staphylococcus saprophyticus: epidemiology and virulence in experimental urinary tract infection of rats

Abstract We studied hemagglutinating and adherence properties in Staphylococcus saprophyticus isolates originating from symptomatic urinary tract infections. 12/13 (92%) of strains adhered to Hep cells and 11/13 (85%) were able to agglutinate sheep erythrocytes. Adherence properties differed markedly between strains ( P < 0.0001. Two strains, one hemagglutinating and adherent and one negative for both properties were chosen for experimental urinary tract infections. Results indicate that presence of the hemagglutinin favours colonization of kidney tissue.     

Oxygen diffusivity of synthetic gels derived from prepolymers

Summary The oxygen-diffusivity (D _m ) of 16 different gels formed with synthetic prepolymers (photo-crosslinkable resins, urethane resins and photosensitive resins), and that of calcium alginate (for comparison) was determined, using an oxygen electrode covered by the gel membranes with stepwise enzymatic removal of O₂ from the buffer solution. The water content of the gels was found to be decisive for the O₂-diffusivity of the gels: gels with the highest water content showed also the highest D _m .
