BackgroundMicafungin is a echinocandin. It inhibits β-1,3-D-glucan synthesis, thus achieving fungicidal activity against virtually all Candida spp., including those resistant to fluconazole, and fungistatic activity against Aspergillus spp., as well as several but not all pathogenic molds. Results from in vitro studies, animal models, small clinical trials, hint at possible future indications such as invasive aspergillosis and empirical viantifungal therapy, although currently there is little information published.AimsTo describe published data of micafungin as treatment against invasive mold infections, specially analysing its role in the inmunodepressed host and critical care setting.MethodsA sistematic review of literature using the principal medical search engines was performed. Terms such as micafungin, aspergillosis, zygomycosis, invasive fungal infections, emerging fungal infections, antifungal treatment or therapy, antifungal prophylaxis, empiric or pre-emptive therapy were crossed. Febrile neutropenia patients were excluded.ResultsSeveral studies in these setting were identified and were described in this review. Although there were no blinded randomized clinical trials published, treatment or prophylaxis of invasive aspergillosis and other invasive mould infections with micafungin described in open clinical studies were analyzed.ConclusionsMicafungin could play a future important role as a primary or rescue therapy, alone or in combination, in the treatment or prophylaxis of invasive fungal infections caused by moulds. Background and aims
We sought to describe the species and functional composition of Brazilian campos rupestres plant communities on severely nutrient-impoverished white sands, to test hypotheses relating plant communities and physiological adaptations to infertile soils. Based on recently-published information on a south-western Australian dune chronosequence, we hypothesised that campos rupestres plant communities would similarly contain a relatively large proportion of non-mycorrhizal species, because of the phosphorus-(P) impoverished nature of the soils. We also sought to test the hypothesis that many of these non-mycorrhizal species have high leaf manganese (Mn) concentrations as a consequence of carboxylate exudation to mobilise soil P.Methods
We conducted flora surveys and quantified mycorrhizal status and foliar Mn concentrations in field sites with strongly-weathered sandy soils. Rhizosphere carboxylates were collected from glasshouse-grown plants to assess a potential correlation of carboxylates and leaf Mn concentrations.Results
Soils were depleted of all major plant nutrients. Non-mycorrhizal plants were abundant in most field sites (mean relative cover = 48%). Vellozia species were dominant aboveground; belowground, roots were colonised more by dark septate endophytic fungi than by mycorrhizal fungi. From the field sites, foliar Mn concentrations in non-mycorrhizal species increased with decreasing soil P concentrations, but only when soil Mn concentrations were above a minimum threshold (exchangeable [Mn] above detection limit). Across all species, however, there was no relationship of foliar Mn concentrations with soil P concentrations.Conclusions
Our hypothesis that white-sand campos rupestres communities contain a relatively large proportion of non-mycorrhizal plants was supported. Comparison with similar ecosystems in south-western Australia suggests that plant communities on severely P-impoverished sandy soils, despite differing evolutionary histories and little overlap in plant families, follow convergent evolutionary paths towards increasing abundance of non-mycorrhizal species.994.

4-(Nitrophenyl)hydrazone derivatives of N-acylhydrazone were synthesized and screened for suppress lymphocyte proliferation and nitrite inhibition in macrophages. Compared to an unsubstituted N-acylhydrazone, active compounds were identified within initial series when hydroxyl, chloride and nitro substituents were employed. Structure-activity relationship was further developed by varying the position of these substituents as well as attaching structurally-related substituents. Changing substituent position revealed a more promising compound series of anti-inflammatory agents. In contrast, an N-methyl group appended to the 4-(nitrophenyl)hydrazone moiety reduced activity. Anti-inflammatory activity of compounds is achieved by modulating IL-1β secretion and prostaglandin E2 synthesis in macrophages and by inhibiting calcineurin phosphatase activity in lymphocytes. Compound SintMed65 was advanced into an acute model of peritonitis in mice, where it inhibited the neutrophil infiltration after being orally administered. In summary, we demonstrated in great details the structural requirements and the underlying mechanism for anti-inflammatory activity of a new family of hydrazone-N-acylhydrazone, which may represent a valuable medicinal chemistry direction for the anti-inflammatory drug development in general. 相似文献

Beverage producers in the United States choose packaging based on cost and consumer preference. Monolayer high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) and gable‐top carton containers have long dominated the U.S. fluid milk market, but pressure for more sustainable packaging is increasing. We present a broad discussion on environmental sustainability of 18 fluid milk containers through life cycle assessment. Because different container types require unique milk processing, distribution, and disposal and incur or avoid milk losses, fluid milk delivery systems (FMDSs) are evaluated, rather than containers in isolation. By assessing FMDSs, a complete measure of containers’ environmental sustainability was obtained. Despite conservative assumptions about milk losses, differences in container size, milk processing, distribution, and container recycling, pair‐wise cradle‐to‐grave comparisons of FMDSs show there are no superior FMDSs. But, 500‐ to 1,000‐milliliter FMDSs are potentially superior to ≥half gallon if they prevent milk losses. Thus, the future of FMDSs in the United States depends on the industry's ability to prevent distribution (12%) and consumption milk losses (20% to 35%). Farm‐gate‐to‐grave comparisons showed that chilled HDPE FMDSs are superior to other plastic and chilled paperboard FMDSs for climate‐change impact, but the result is inconclusive for chilled HDPE to ambient (unrefrigerated) paperboard or plastic pouch FMDS comparisons. Plastic pouch FMDSs show potential to reduce nonrenewable fossil energy, but need to be recyclable. Ambient FMDSs are superior to chilled FMDSs for water depletion. Eight‐ounce paperboard FMDSs are superior to 8‐ounce plastic FMDSs. Thus, alternative FMDSs may improve environmental sustainability of the U.S. postfarm fluid milk supply chain. 相似文献

By means of DNA barcoding and microsatellite analyses, we studied the species and individuals of legitimate seed dispersers of the Mediterranean shrub Pistacia lentiscus, a keystone species that represents the main source of food in winter for frugivorous birds. We collected dropping of birds containing seeds, and after DNA extraction we amplified and sequenced a fragment of the mitochondrial COI gene. Through BLASTN queries of the sequenced fragments against registered sequences in the GenBank database we identified the bird species that are currently dispersing P. lentiscus seeds. Further, through the amplification of specific nuclear microsatellite loci we calculated standard genetic diversity parameters of the population of birds from the genus Sylvia (the blackcap and Sardinian warbler), the most important dispersers of P. lentiscus. Five bird species were identified as seed dispersers through their barcode match. Further, we found that S. melanocephala displayed slightly lower levels of genetic diversity than S. atricapilla. In this study we show how the genetic analyses of environmental faecal samples can be a useful and convenient tool for the study of plant-frugivore interactions through the ascertainment of the identity of the species involved and through the analyses of genetic variability of their populations. 相似文献

The American bullfrog Lithobates catesbeianus is an invasive species that can strongly affect native amphibian communities through competition, predation, or introduction of diseases. This frog has invaded multiple areas in South America, for which niche models predict suitable environments across much of the continent. This paper reveals the state of the invasion of this species in Uruguay and its possible relationship with the chytrid pathogenic fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis. Surveys at invaded sites were conducted from 2007 to 2015, identified two populations undergoing recent range expansion (one of them exponential), two populations that failed to establish, and a new record in an urban area of the capital city, Montevideo. In all the analysed feral populations, chytridiomycosis was found. Our data suggest that the invasion of L. catesbeianus in Uruguay is at an early stage, with very localized populations, which might allow for the implementation of cost-effective management plans, with eradication constituting a plausible option. 相似文献
