The spatial spread and final size of models for the deterministic host-vector epidemic

A disease is considered which is transferred between two populations, termed hosts and vectors. The disease is transmitted solely from infected vector to uninfected host and from infected host to uninfected vector. Two models are formulated in which infectious individuals are introduced at time t = 0 into the populations of susceptibles, thus triggering an epidemic through those populations. Conditions are established for a major epidemic to occur, and the final size of the epidemic is obtained for these models when no spatial aspect is considered. When a spatial aspect is included in the models, again the condition for a major epidemic is obtained. The pandemic theorem is proved rigorously, giving a lower bound for the proportion of each population, at each point, who eventually suffer the epidemic. The behavior a long way from the initial focus of infection is also rigorously obtained.     

Serotonin-induced endothelial cell proliferation is blocked by omega-3 fatty acids.

Serotonin (5HT) released from aggregating platelets at sites of vascular injury is a known mitogen for vascular endothelial cells. Recent studies have indicated that regenerating endothelial cells at sites of vessel wall injury may play a role in the development of restenosis by synthesizing and releasing growth factors for vascular smooth muscle cells, proliferation of which may result in the development of neointima. Diets rich in fish oils (omega-3 fatty acids) are associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease including atherosclerosis and restenosis. This study examined the effect of the omega-3 and other fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), on 5HT induced endothelial cell proliferation. Among the fatty acids examined only EPA and DHA could reverse the mitogenic effect of 5HT on vascular endothelial cells, whereas oleic acid or palmitic acid did not have any effect. When added together, EPA and DHA potentiate each other in reversing the mitogenic effect of 5HT. EPA and DHA also inhibited the 5HT-induced increase in the 5HT2 receptor mRNA, without a change in the receptor density or affinity. This data suggests that one of the mechanisms by which omega-3 fatty acids may attenuate the development of atherosclerosis or restenosis is to inhibit the mitogen induced growth of vascular endothelial cells, which attenuates the release of growth factors for vascular smooth muscle cells.     

A major QTL for acute ethanol sensitivity in the alcohol tolerant and non-tolerant selected rat lines

The Alcohol Tolerant and Alcohol Non-Tolerant rats (AT, ANT) were selectively bred for ethanol-induced ataxia as measured on the inclined plane. Here we report on a quantitative trait locus (QTL) study in an F₂ intercross population derived from inbred AT and ANT (IAT, IANT) and a follow-up study of congenics that were bred to examine one of the mapped QTLs. Over 1200 F₂ offspring were tested for inclined plane sensitivity, acute tolerance on the inclined plane, duration of the loss of righting reflex (LORR) and blood ethanol at regain of the righting reflex (BECRR). F₂ rats that were in the upper and lower 20% for inclined plane sensitivity were genotyped with 78 SSLP markers. Significant QTLs for inclined plane sensitivity were mapped on chromosomes 8 and 20; suggestive QTLs were mapped on chromosomes 1, 2 and 3. Highly significant QTLs for LORR duration (LOD = 12.4) and BECRR (LOD = 5.7) were mapped to the same locus on chromosome 1. Breeding and testing of reciprocal congenic lines confirmed the chromosome 1 LORR/BECRR QTL. A series of recombinant congenic sub-lines were bred to fine-map this QTL. Current results have narrowed the QTL to an interval of between 5 and 20 Mb. We expect to be able to narrow the interval to less than 5 Mb with additional genotyping and continued breeding of recombinant sub-congenic lines.     

Asparaginase production by human clinical isolates of Vibrio succinogenes

Three human isolates of Vibrio succinogenes produced asparaginase. Apparent Km's were 87,220, and 320 microM. The rate of glutamine hydrolysis was between 2.8 and 3.5% of the rate of asparagine hydrolysis. Asparaginase production was not induced by ammonium ions, and enzyme yields were lower than those obtained with the rumen strain.     

Simplified Induction of Labour for the Patient with a Dead Baby in Utero

The problem posed by the presence of a dead fetus in utero after the first trimester is important because of the psychological attitude of the patient and the danger of hypofibrinogenemia. In the past, induction of labour in these patients has often been difficult, and surgery has had to be undertaken to empty the uterus.In these patients, labour was induced by inserting a needle with a trocar through the abdominal wall under local anesthesia into the amniotic sac. Approximately 200 ml. of amniotic fluid is withdrawn and replaced with a slightly larger amount of 20% saline solution. Labour began within 24 hours and delivery occurred within the next 14 hours. There have been no complications or failures with this technique in the cases reported in the literature.
