Factorial combinations of four photoperiods (10 h, 11 h 40 min,13 h 20 min and 15 h) and three night temperatures (14, 19 and24 °C) combined with a single day temperature (30 °C)were imposed on nodulated plants of 11 cowpea accessions [Vignaunguiculata (L) Walp.] grown in pots in growth cabinets. Thetimes to first appearance of flower buds, open flowers and maturepods were recorded. Linear relationships were established betweenthe reciprocal of the times taken to flower and both mean diurnaltemperature and photoperiod. When the equations describing thesetwo responses are solved, the time to flower in any given photothermalregime is predicted by whichever solution calls for the greaterdelay in flowering. Thus in different circumstances floweringis controlled exclusively by either mean temperature or photoperiod.The value of the critical photoperiod is temperature-dependentand a further equation, derived from the first two, predictsthis relationship. Considered together as a quantitative modelthese relationships suggest simple field methods for screeninggenotypes to determine photo-thermal response surfaces. Cassava seed is only capable of germinating over a restrictedrange of constant temperatures. During storage the optimum constanttemperature for germination decreases from about 35 to 30 °Cor possibly less. The rate at which the optimum temperaturechanges during dry storage increases with increase in storagetemperature over the range 0 to 40 °C. Some alternating-temperatureregimes (16 h at the lower temperature; 8 h at the higher temperature)can provide conditions as favourable for germination as theoptimum constant temperatures. Furthermore, it has been shownthat temperature alternation itself is stimulatory because whenthe range of the alternation does not include the optimum constanttemperature value, percentage germination is often higher thancould be obtained at any constant temperature within the range,though this stimulatory response declines during storage. Forthese reasons it is provisionally recommended that cassava seedshould be germinated at 25/35 °C which is as stimulatorya treatment as any which has so far been investigated and hasthe advantage of encompassing the range over which the optimumconstant temperature changes during storage. Rodents are well known for the production of physically quite different audible and ultrasonic cries. Both of these cries are known to be produced in the larynx, but the anatomy of the larynx is practically unknown, it thus being difficult to analyse how the cries are produced. The anatomy of the larynx of Mus musculus is described in detail and is found to be essentially typical of that of other mammals that can fix the thorax and make independent use of the forelimbs. Unlike the larynx of microchiropteran bats, no modifications for ultrasound production are apparent, although the laryngeäl structure is ideal for the production of audible cries. However, the audible and ultrasonic cries differ so markedly that they are unlikely to be produced by the same mechanism. The lack of laryngeal specialization therefore makes the ultrasound production mechanism largely an enigma.  相似文献

Differential screening of a cDNA library generated from RNA extracted from ethylene-treated leaflet abscission zones of Sambucus nigra resulted in the isolation of 20 abscission-related clones. These clones could be grouped into seven families. Sequencing of members of these families revealed that the majority encoded pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins, and these could be identified by sequence homology as a polyphenol oxidase (PPO), a PR-1 type protein, a Chial type chitinase, a PR-4 type protein similar to the potato win peptides, a PR-6 type proteinase inhibitor, a Chia4 type chitinase and a metallothionein-like protein (Coupe, Taylor & Roberts 1995, Planta 197, 442–447). Northern analysis revealed that these mRNAs were not expressed in freshly excised material but accumulated primarily in the abscission zone tissue after 18 h of exposure to ethylene at a time when abscission of the leaflet explants had reached 70%. Expression of the PPO and the Chia4-type chitinase was ethylene-dependent while that of the PR-4 type was up-regulated in the abscission zone tissue in the absence of the gas. The characterization of these mRNAs and their encoded proteins is presented and their possible roles during abscission are discussed.  相似文献
