Studying variations in behaviour at the individual or population level enables insight into the reproductive strategies within a species. We examined individual and geographical variation in the vocal and dive behaviour of male harbour seals, Phoca vitulina, which is associated with aquatic mating. This display behaviour was recorded in the Moray Firth, Scotland, from July 1994 to 1997, and in Orkney, Scotland, during July 1998. One vocalization type was apparent in the Moray Firth and two in Orkney. Time parameters (total and pulse duration) varied between males in the population in the Moray Firth. We used both frequency and time parameters in a discriminant analysis, which showed that 73.2% of individual male vocalizations could be correctly classified; 94.6% of male vocalizations from the Moray Firth and Orkney could be correctly classified according to their geographical areas. Therefore, vocal variation was greater between geographical areas than between individuals. No individual variation was apparent between dive and surface interval durations. However, individuals varied significantly in the percentage of short surface intervals. Male harbour seals showed substantial variability in the parameters affecting their vocal and dive behaviour during the mating season. We suggest that these variations may be indicative of adaptations to varying environmental challenges influencing the reproductive strategies of discrete populations. 摘要:【目的】为获得能够降解烤烟秸秆和烟碱的菌株,并探索其降解烤烟秸秆的利用途径。【方法】以烤烟秸秆为唯一碳氮源,从烟田土壤中进行了菌株的筛选。采用形态学观察、生理生化特性鉴定、16S rRNA基因序列鉴定等方法对该菌株进行了鉴定,并对其以烤烟秸秆为底物进行液态发酵的产酶活性和木质纤维素降解效果进行了测定。【结果】结果表明:该菌株为巨大芽孢杆菌(Bacillus megaterium)。在以烤烟秸秆为主要营养物质液态发酵条件下该菌株具有较强的木质素降解能力,最大漆酶活力达到418.52 U/L,而木质素过氧化物酶和锰过氧化物酶的最大酶活分别为19.71 U/L 和64.71 U/L。此外,发酵20 d后该菌能够完全降解发酵液中的烟碱。【结论】本研究筛选到了1株能够较好降解烤烟秸秆和完全降解烟碱的巨大芽孢杆菌(Bacillus megaterium),且该菌株具有利用烤烟秸秆生产漆酶的应用价值。  相似文献

Background

Due to the increasing evidence of their health benefits, whole grains are recommended for consumption worldwide. Such recommendations are, however, rarely quantitative. Our aim was to perform a quantitative evaluation of the relationship between whole grain consumption and the occurrence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) to support a recommendation on the daily consumption of whole grains.

Methods and Findings

We conducted a systematic review by searching three bibliographic databases. We included human studies addressing the relationship between whole grain consumption and T2D occurrence, and providing quantitative information on daily intake of whole grains. A dose-response meta-regression analysis between whole grain intake and T2D occurrence was performed, using a hierarchical mixed least square linear regression model. Eight observational studies were included (all but one prospective), with a total of 15,573 cases of T2D among 316,051 participants. Quantitative meta-regression demonstrated a significant linear inverse relationship between whole grain intake and T2D occurrence (P<0.0001), with an overall absolute reduction of 0.3% in the T2D rate for each additional 10 g of whole grain ingredient consumed daily. The association persisted when adjusted on sex, age, country, study design, follow up duration, and mode of report of whole grain intakes (as foods or ingredients).

Conclusions

The meta-regression model made it possible to estimate the decrease in T2D risk corresponding to various changes in whole grain intakes, and the results contribute to setting up quantitative recommendations. For instance, consuming three servings of whole grain foods (45 g of whole grain ingredients) daily would induce a 20% relative reduction in the T2D risk as compared to consuming a half serving (7.5 g of whole grain ingredients). These results should be considered for future recommendations, by considering the actual whole grain intake of the concerned populations. Significant levels of circulating immune complexes (ICs) containing rheumatoid factors and immunoglobulin G in peripheral blood are a characteristic feature of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). ICs interact through Fcγ receptors (FcγR) to activate phagocytes in numerous inflammatory processes. The high concentration of neutrophils in synovial fluid during active phases of the disease, together with their destructive capacity, pose important questions as to their role in the pathogenesis of RA. Functional defects in RA or control peripheral blood neutrophil FcγRs were examined with a specific FcγR-mediated reactive oxygen species (ROS) assay. Heterologous cross-linking of FcγRIIa and FcγRIIIb on neutrophils resulted in a significantly decreased production of ROS by RA cells compared with controls matched for age and sex. However, expression and homologous ligation of receptors did not differ between these groups. These data suggest that neutrophil priming does occur before emigration into the joint and that blood neutrophils from patients with RA have a functional impairment in cooperative FcγR-mediated ROS generation. This may account for the increased susceptibility to bacterial infection that arises in patients with severe disease.  相似文献

It is considered a dogma that a secretory peak of LH is indispensable as the trigger of ovulation. However, earlier studies on hypophysectomized rodents have shown that stimulation with recombinant FSH, devoid of any LH activity, is able to boost the final stages of follicular maturation and trigger ovulation. As the expression of ovarian LH receptors (LHRs) still persists after hypophysectomy, such studies cannot totally exclude the possibility that LHR activation is involved in the apparently pure FSH effects. To revisit this question, we analyzed in LHR knockout (LuRKO) mice the progression of folliculogenesis and induction of ovulation by human chorionic gonadotropin and human recombinant FSH treatments. The results provide clear evidence that follicular development and ovulation could not be induced by high doses of FSH in the absence of LHR expression. Ovarian histology and oocyte analyses indicated that follicular maturation did not advance in LuRKO mice beyond the antral follicle stage. Neither were ovulations detected in LuRKO ovaries after any of the gonadotropin treatments. The ovarian resistance to FSH treatment in the absence of LHR was confirmed by real-time RT-PCR and immunohistochemical analyses of a number of gonadotropin-dependent genes, which only responded to the treatments in wild-type control mice. Negative findings were not altered by estradiol priming preceding the gonadotropin stimulations. Hence, the present study shows that, in addition to ovulation, the expression of LHR is essential for follicular maturation in the progression from antral to preovulatory stage.  相似文献

The male urogenital tract epithelium is exposed to several pathogens, but only a few are potent enough to cause infection in a healthy individual. The exact mechanisms that protect the male reproductive tract from ascending pathogenic micro-organisms are still poorly characterized. We recently reported a method to identify novel epididymis-specific genes by analyzing the expressed sequence tags (ESTs) present in the mouse epididymal cDNA library of the UniGene collection at National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). In the present study, we discovered in silico two novel epididymal genes: the beta-defensins Defb41 and Defb42. The full-length cDNAs for the genes were acquired by the RT-PCR and 5'-RACE approaches and were subsequently sequenced. Q-RT-PCR and in situ hybridization revealed Defb41 and Defb42 to be expressed mainly in the proximal caput. The expression of both defensins was found to be regulated by androgens. Based on their structure and expression pattern, Defb41 and Defb42 are suggested to have a role in the antimicrobial protection of sperm and urogenital tract epithelia.  相似文献

We evaluated the impact of non-native rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss on a population of endemic Cedarberg ghost frog Heleophryne depressa in the upper Krom River (Olifants-Doring River Catchment, Cape Fold Ecoregion). We compared H. depressa abundance (using kick-sampling and underwater video analysis) and environmental conditions between sites above and below a waterfall that marks the upper distribution limit of O. mykiss. Heleophryne depressa abundance was significantly greater above the waterfall than that below it, and, because there was no significant difference in measured environmental variables, O. mykiss presence is identified as the most likely explanation for the observed decrease in H. depressa abundance.  相似文献

Novel oligomers that resist digestion in the upper gut were prepared from oat mixed-linked β-glucan and xylan by enzymatic hydrolysis with lichenase of Bacillus subtilis and xylanase of Trichoderma reesei respectively. The low-molecular-mass hydrolysis products of β-glucan and xylan were compared with fructooligomers and raffinose in their ability to provide growth substrates for probiotic (Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium) and intestinal (Bacteroides, Clostridium and Escherichia coli) strains in vitro. A degradation profile of each carbohydrate and total sugar consumption were analysed with HPLC, and bacterial growth rate with an automatic turbidometer, the Bioscreen C system. β-Glucooligomers and xylooligomers both enhanced the growth of health-promoting probiotic strains as compared with intestinal bacterial growth, but not to a significant level. Raffinose stimulated the probiotic strains significantly, whereas fructooligomers induced high average growth for intestinal bacteria also. Different commercial lipases and phosphoiipases were studied in the hydrolysis and transesterification of synthetic phosphatidylcholine and soybean lecithin. Wide variations in the lipase and phospholipase activities and in the protein contents of the preparations were observed. The substrate specificity varied between different enzymes. A high degree of hydrolysis of synthetic and soybean phospholipids was achieved with both types of enzymes.

Enzymes immobilized on Celite were used in the transesterification of dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine and oleic acid. The conversions were carried out both without solvent and in the presence of toluene. The amount of modified phosphatidylcholine was measured using HPLC. The highest amount of modified phosphatidylcholine was obtained in solvent-free transesterification. The best results were obtained with Aspergillus niyer lipase.  相似文献

Summary Xylonic acid was produced efficiently from pure xylose by Pseudomonas fragi ATCC 4973 and Gluconobacter oxydans subsp. suboxydans ATCC 621. The yield from 10% xylose was in both cases over 95% of the theoretical. However, the sensitivities of the strains towards the major inhibitors found in hemicellulose hydrolyzates, ie. acetic acid, furfural and two lignin-derived compounds, varied. G. oxydans tolerated all these inhibitors better than P. fragi. In tests using steamed hemicellulose hydrolyzate, G. oxydans was able to utilize the substrate only at dilute xylose concentrations. After ether extraction or mixed bed resin pretreatment, the fermentability of the hydrolyzate was increased significantly.  相似文献
