The concept of carrying capacity of an ecosystem fornatural populations is derived from the logisticgrowth curve in population
ecology, and defined as themaximum standing stock that can be supported by agiven ecosystem for a given time. This definitionneeds
to be modified for the exploitation ofecosystems. Carrying capacity for exploitation isdefined as the standing stock at which
the annualproduction of a marketable cohort is maximized. Forbivalve suspension feeders, the dominant factordetermining the
exploitation carrying capacity at theecosystem scale is primary production. At a localscale carrying capacity depends on physicalconstraints
such as substrate, shelter and food supplyby tidal currents.We evaluate critically some existing models ofexploited ecosystems
for shellfish cultivation inorder to formulate the minimum requirements of ageneric carrying capacity model. Generic models
canbe developed for both the ecosystem scale and thelocal scale, depending on the aim of the modelling.Transport processes,
sediment dynamics and submodelsfor organism and population level processes areminimum requirements for carrying capacity modelling.

Twenty-nine lines with deletions in the Lr19 ('Indis') translocated chromosome segment were used to physically map three Thinopyrum RFLP loci as well as the Sr25 and Sd1 loci. From the data, the relative locations of marker loci on the translocation were determined as: Sd1, Xpsr165, Xpsr105, Xps129, Lr19, Wsp-D1, Sr25/Y. The data confirmed the reported homoeology between the Lr19 segment and chromosome arm 7DL of wheat. Also, it seems that the Lr19 translocation in 'Indis' is very similar to the Lr19 segment in the T4 source and that the former may not derive from Thinopyrum distichum. The hydrogenosomal malic enzyme (ME) was purified from the anaerobic fungus Neocallimastix frontalis . Using reverse genetics, the corresponding cDNA was isolated and characterized. The deduced amino acid sequence of the ME showed high similarity to ME from metazoa, plants and protists. Putative functional domains for malate and NAD+ /NADP+ binding were identified. Phylogenetic analysis of the deduced amino acid sequence of the new ME suggests that it is homologous to reference bacterial and eukaryotic ME. Most interestingly, the cDNA codes for a protein which contains a 27-amino-acid N-terminus which is not present on the purified mature protein. This presequence shares features with known mitochondrial targeting signals, including an enrichment in Ala, Leu, Ser, and Arg, and the presence of an Arg at position –2 relative to amino acid 1 of the mature protein. This is the first report of a mitochondrial-like targeting signal on a hydrogenosomal enzyme from an anaerobic fungus and provides support for the hypothesis that hydrogenosomes in Neocallimastix frontalis might be modified mitochondria. 相似文献

Within the Bunyaviridae virus family, members of the genus Tospovirus are unique in their ability to infect plants. A characteristic genetic difference between tospoviruses and the animal-infecting members of this virus family is the occurrence of an additional gene, denoted NSM, located on the genomic M RNA segment. This gene has previously been implicated in the cell-to-cell movement of this virus during systemic infection. Transgenic tobacco plants have been obtained expressing the NSM protein of tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), the type member of the tospoviruses, from a constitutive promoter. Detectable amounts of the NSM protein could be observed in plants from nine different lines. The protein was only detectable in fractions enriched for cell wall material. More detailed immunogold labelling studies revealed specific association of NSM protein with plasmodesmata. Plants accumulating the NSM protein to detectable levels developed aberrations in growth, resulting in a significant reduction of size and accelerated senescence. In addition, these plants are restricted in their capacity to produce flowers. The results presented provide additional evidence that the NSM protein, by modifying plasmodesmata, represents the cell-to-cell movement function of tospoviruses. We find recurring amino-acid residue packing patterns, or spatial motifs, that are characteristic of protein structural families, by applying a novel frequent subgraph mining algorithm to graph representations of protein three-dimensional structure. Graph nodes represent amino acids, and edges are chosen in one of three ways: first, using a threshold for contact distance between residues; second, using Delaunay tessellation; and third, using the recently developed almost-Delaunay edges. For a set of graphs representing a protein family from the Structural Classification of Proteins (SCOP) database, subgraph mining typically identifies several hundred common subgraphs corresponding to spatial motifs that are frequently found in proteins in the family but rarely found outside of it. We find that some of the large motifs map onto known functional regions in two protein families explored in this study, i.e., serine proteases and kinases. We find that graphs based on almost-Delaunay edges significantly reduce the number of edges in the graph representation and hence present computational advantage, yet the patterns extracted from such graphs have a biological interpretation approximately equivalent to that of those extracted from distance based graphs. 相似文献

In order to understand the hormonal regulation of androgen receptors (AR) in the separate lobes of the rat prostate gland, the present study examined AR levels in the ventral, dorsal and lateral prostate lobes as a function of androgen withdrawal to complete prostatic regression and subsequent testosterone replacement. In the intact rat, the 3 prostate lobes contained significantly different amounts of androgen binding sites. Mean number of total cellular AR in the ventral, dorsal and lateral lobes was 7370, 1690, and 1015 fm/mg DNA, respectively. These receptors were primarily localized within the nuclear fraction of homogenized tissue: ventral, 86%; dorsal, 83%; and lateral, 100% nuclear localization. Androgen withdrawal was initiated via castration and rats were sacrificed 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 14 days thereafter. Nuclear AR levels fell rapidly to 5, 24 and 30% of intact values by 48 h in the ventral, dorsal and lateral lobes, respectively. Levels of nuclear AR continued to decline in the ventral and dorsal lobes to undetectable levels by Day 10. In marked contrast, lateral lobe nuclear AR began to increase on Day 3 postcastration, reaching intact values by Day 7 and 133% intact levels by Day 14. Cytosolic AR in the ventral and dorsal lobes initially increased following castration, but subsequently declined to low levels by Day 14. Cytosolic AR were not detectable in the lateral prostate at any time point following castration. To determine the nuclear AR response to testosterone at this time, 14 day castrate rats were given 2 cm testosterone implants and sacrificed 1, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 14 days thereafter. As expected, nuclear AR rapidly returned in the ventral and dorsal lobes by Day 1 and reached a plateau by Day 5. A short term response to androgen exposure occurred in the lateral lobe where an immediate 9-fold increase in nuclear AR quantity was observed; however, these levels rapidly declined to pre-implant values by Day 5 and remained at that level despite continued exposure to testosterone. These f findings indicate that while nuclear AR levels in the ventral and dorsal prostate are primarily regulated by androgens, a testosterone-independent component exists within the lateral lobe. 相似文献

Protoplasts were isolated from leaves of the aquatic angiosperm Potamogeton lucens L. The leaves utilize bicarbonate as a carbon source for photosynthesis, and show polarity; that is, acidification of the periplasmic space of the lower, and alkalinization of the space near the upper leaf side. At present there are two models under consideration for this photosynthetic bicarbonate utilization process: conversion of bicarbonate into free carbon dioxide as a result of acidification and, second, a bicarbonate-proton symport across the plasma membrane. Carbon fixation of protoplasts was studied at different pH values and compared with that in leaf strips. Using the isotopic disequilibrium technique, it was established that carbon dioxide and not bicarbonate was the form in which DIC actually crossed the plasma membrane. It is concluded that there is probably no true bicarbonate transport system at the plasma membrane of these cells and that bicarbonate utilization in this species apparently rests on the conversion of bicarbonate into carbon dioxide. Experiments with acetazolamide, an inhibitor of periplasmic carbonic anhydrase, and direct measurements of carbonic anhydrase activity in intact leaves indicate that in this species the role of this enzyme for periplasmic conversion of bicarbonate into carbon dioxide is insignificant. 相似文献

The utilization of HCO3− as carbon source for photosynthesis by aquatic angiosperms results in the production of 1 mole OH− for each mole CO2 assimilated. The OH− ions are subsequently released to the medium. In several Potamogeton and Elodea species, the site of the HCO3− influx and OH− efflux are spatially separated. Described here are light- and dark-induced pH changes at the lower and upper epidermis of the leaves of Potamogeton lucens, Elodea densa, and Elodea canadensis. 相似文献
