Eight neurologically impaired patients underwent reconstruction of chronic perineal and ischial pressure sores utilizing an inferiorly based rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap. Other local and regional flap options had been previously used or were not feasible. In six patients, healing was uncomplicated. One patient required local debridement and flap readvancement. The second involved minor separation of a suture line and healed by secondary intention. All donor sites were closed directly and healed by primary intention. There was no evidence of hernia formation, and no functional deficit was detected from removal of the rectus muscle in any of the patients. In conclusion, it was felt that the inferiorly based rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap should be considered a reconstructive option in dealing with perineal and ischial pressure sores. Furthermore, for reasons discussed, we found distinct advantages to using this flap in spinal cord injury patients.  相似文献

Infection of broad mites, Polyphagotarsonemus latus, by conidia of Beauveria bassiana, Hirsutella thompsonii, and Paecilomyces fumosoroseus conidia was investigated in the laboratory under controlled temperature and moisture conditions. Infection of P. latus by the fungus (LC50) was related positively to the 1.16 × 106 B. bassiana conidia per ml, 2.39 × 103 H. thompsonii conidia per ml, and 1.29 × 105 P. fumosoroseus conidia per ml. Mortality caused by B. bassiana occurred the fastest among densities fluctuating between 65 and 125 mites per leaf. The pathogens B. bassiana and P. fumosoroseus, adjuvants (oil and molasses), and the acaricide ABG6364, a microbial insecticide containing the Beta-exotoxin of Bacillus thuringiensis were evaluated for efficacy against P. latus in a greenhouse test. The B. bassiana treated plants had the greatest and most persistent effect on percentage mortality of total broad mites present per leaf (88 %) followed by the acaricide ABG6364. Use of adjuvants (oil and molasses) did not increase infection of P. latus.  相似文献

Anaerobic digestion of dissolved, suspended and solid organics has rapidly evolved in the last decades but nevertheless still faces several scientific unknowns. In this review, some fundamentals of bacterial conversions and adhesion are addressed initially. It is argued in the light of G-values of reactions, and in view of the minimum energy quantum per mol, that anaerobic syntrophs must have special survival strategies in order to support their existence: redistributing the available energy between the partners, reduced end-product fermentation reactions and special cell-to-cell physiological interactions. In terms of kinetics, it appears that both reaction rates and residual substrate thresholds are strongly related to minimum G-values. These new fundamental insights open perspectives for efficient design and operation of anaerobic bioprocesses. Subsequently, an overview is given of the current anaerobic biotechnology. For treating wastewaters, a novel and high performance new system has been introduced during the last decade; the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket system (UASB). This reactor concept requires anaerobic consortia to grow in a dense and eco-physiologically well-organized way. The microbial principles of such granular sludge growth are presented. Using a thermodynamic approach, the formation of different types of aggregates is explained. The application of this bioprocess in worldwide wastewater treatment is indicated. Due to the long retention times of the active biomass, the UASB is also suitable for the development of bacterial consortia capable of degrading xenobiotics. Operating granular sludge reactors at high upflow velocities (5–6 m/h) in expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) systems enlarges the application field to very low strength wastewaters (chemical oxygen demand < 1 g/l) and psychrophilic temperatures (10°C). For the treatment of organic suspensions, there is currently a tendency to evolve from the conventional mesophilic continuously stirred tank system to the thermophilic configuration, as the latter permits higher conversion rates and easier sanitation. Integration of ultrafiltration in anaerobic slurry digestion facilitates operation at higher volumetric loading rates and at shorter residence times. With respect to organic solids, the recent trend in society towards source separated collection of biowaste has opened a broad range of new application areas for solid state anaerobic fermentation.W. Theiler's virus infection induces a specific cytotoxic T lymphocyte response   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10  
Theiler's virus, a murine picornavirus, persists in the central nervous system of susceptible mouse strains and causes chronic inflammation and primary demyelination. One of the current hypotheses is that demyelination is, at least in part, mediated by virus-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL). However, it is generally assumed that picornaviruses do not induce CTL. In point of fact, their existence has only been demonstrated for Coxsackievirus B-3. To determine whether Theiler's virus induces a CTL response, we generated a murine mastocytoma cell line stably transfected with the coding region of the genome of Theiler's virus strain DA. Using these cells as targets we showed that infected DBA/2 mice, a susceptible strain, produce cytotoxic T lymphocytes. The cytotoxic activity was Theiler's-virus specific. It was for the most part mediated by CD8+ T lymphocytes and H-2 restricted. This is the first demonstration that a specific CTL response is generated during Theiler's virus infection.  相似文献

Biotinyl derivatives of seven plant lectins-concanavalin A (Con A), peanut agglutinin (PNA), Ricinus communis agglutinin I (RCA I), Ulex europeus agglutinin I (UEA I), soybean agglutinin (SBA), Dolichos biflorus agglutinin (DBA), and wheat germ agglutinin (WGA)-were bound to cryostat sections of biopsied normal human muscle and visualized with avidin-horseradish peroxidase conjugates. A distinct staining pattern was observed with each lectin. The most general staining was observed with Con A, RCA I, and WGA, which permitted strong visualization of the plasmalemma-basement membrane unit, tubular profiles in the interior of muscle fibers, blood vessels, and connective tissue. PNA gave virtually no intracellular staining, while SBA and UEA I selectively stained blood vessels. DBA was unique in providing good visualization of myonuclei. In each case, lectin staining could be blocked by appropriate sugar inhibitors. Neuraminidase pretreatment of the cryostat sections altered the pattern of staining by all lectins except UEA I and Con A; staining with RCA I became stronger and that with WGA became less intense, while staining with PNA, SBA and DBA became stronger and more generalized, resembling that of RCA I. These effects of neuraminidase pretreatment are in conformity with the known structure of the oligosaccharide chains of membrane glycoproteins and specificities of the lectins involved.  相似文献
