Spike trains from individual antennal olfactory cells of tsetse flies (Glossina spp.) obtained during steady-state conditions (spontaneous as well as during stimulation with 1-octen-3-ol) and dynamic stimulation with repetitive pulses of 1-octen-3-ol were investigated by studying the spike frequency and the temporal structure of the trains. In general, stimulation changes the intensity of the spike activity but leaves the underlying stochastic structure unaffected. This structure turns out to be a renewal process. The only independently varying parameter in this process is the mean interspike interval length, suggesting that olfactory cells of tsetse flies may transmit information via a frequency coding. In spike records with high firing rates, however, the stationary records had significant negative first- order serial correlation coefficients and were non-renewal. Some cells in this study were capable of precisely encoding the onset of the odour pulses at frequencies up to at least 3 Hz. Cells with a rapid return to pre-stimulus activity at the end of stimulation responded more adequately to pulsed stimuli than cells with a long increased spike frequency. While short-firing cells process information via a frequency code, long-firing cells responded with two distinctive phases: a phasic, non-renewal response and a tonic, renewal response which may function as a memory of previous stimulations.   相似文献

  1. Organisms in the wild are faced with multiple threats and a common response is a change in behaviour. To disentangle responses to several threats, we exposed two differently sized species of the freshwater invertebrate Daphnia to solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and predation from either moving pelagic or benthic ambush predators.
  2. Using an advanced nanotechnology-based method, we tracked the three-dimensional movements of those mm-sized animals at the individual level. Each behavioural trial was performed both under conditions resembling night (no UVR) and day (UVR) and we examined patterns of the depth distribution and swimming speed by Daphnia across three treatments: no predator (control); bottom-dwelling damselfly (Calopteryx sp.); and fish (stickleback, Pungitius pungitius) predators. We also quantified the actual predation rate by the two predators on the two Daphnia species, Daphnia manga and Daphnia pulex.
  3. We show that individual Daphnia are able to identify predators with different feeding habitats, rank multiple and simultaneously occurring risks and respond in accordance with the actual threat; complex responses that are generally associated with larger animals.
  4. In a broader context, our results highlight and quantify how a cocktail of everyday threats is perceived and handled by invertebrates, which advances our understanding of species distribution in space and time, and thereby of population dynamics and ecosystem function in natural ecosystems.

The interactions between illusory and real contours have been investigated under monocular, binocular and dichoptic conditions. Results show that under all three presentation conditions, periodic alternations, generally called rivalry, occur during the perception of cognitive (or illusory) triangles, while earlier research had failed to find such rivalry (Bradley and Dumais 1975). With line triangles, rivalry is experienced only under dichoptic conditions. A model is proposed to account for the observed phenomena.  相似文献

Detecting population subdivision when apparent barriers to gene flow are lacking is important in evolutionary and conservation biology. Recent research indicates that intraspecific population complexity can be crucial for maintaining a species′ evolutionary potential, productivity, and ecological role. We monitored the genetic relationships at 14 allozyme loci among ~4,000 brown trout (Salmo trutta) collected during 19 years from two small interconnected mountain lakes (0.10 and 0.17 km2, respectively) in central Sweden. There were no allele frequency differences between the lakes. However, heterozygote deficiencies within lakes became obvious after a few years of monitoring. Detailed analyses were then carried out without a priori grouping of samples, revealing unexpected differentiation patterns: (i) the same two genetically distinct (F ST ≥ 0.10) populations occur sympatrically at about equal frequencies within both lakes, (ii) the genetic subdivision is not coupled with apparent phenotypical dichotomies, (iii) this cryptic structure remains stable over the two decades monitored, and (iv) the point estimates of effective population size are c. 120 and 190, respectively, indicating that genetic drift is important in this system. A subsample of 382 fish was also analyzed for seven microsatellites. The genetic pattern does not follow that of the allozymes, and in this subsample the presence of multiple populations would have gone undetected if only scoring microsatellites. Sympatric populations may be more common than anticipated, but difficult to detect when individuals cannot be grouped appropriately, or when markers or sample sizes are insufficient to provide adequate statistical power with approaches not requiring prior grouping.  相似文献
