Bacteria adhering to newly emerged and decomposing leaves ofPotamogeton pectinatus L. were examined using scanning electron microscopy. Bacteria obtained from mature leaves were isolated, grown in pure culture, and allowed to infect bacteria-free leaves. Infected leaves and individual isolates were examined by scanning electron microscopy. The method provided detail of the forms of bacterial attachment to leaf surfaces.Supernatants from isolate cultures were assayed for cellulase activity. Six out of eight isolates produced extracellular cellulase in medium containing carboxymethyl cellulose. In one isolate cellulase was produced at discrete intervals, at the beginning and end of the growth cycle. The adhesion of the isolates toP. pectinatus leaves, as well as their possession of cellulase, are considered as evidence of an active role of bacteria in the degradation ofP. pectinatus foliage. The system is unusual in that bacteria, as opposed to fungi, are primary colonizers of the leaves.  相似文献

During passage in the normal mouse, a strain ofNeisseria gonorrhoeae (F62) has acquired genetic defects phenotypically expressed in requirements for arginine and uracil and a partial requirement for hypoxanthine. In addition, the mouse-passaged strain exhibits slower growth and colonial morphology that differs from any of the four parental colony types. Multiple changes in the mouse-passaged strain suggest several mutations. The new auxotrophic requirements and some of the colony characteristics of the mouse-derived strain resemble gonococci isolated from disseminated human infections. A normal mouse model for gonorrhea may contribute greatly to future understanding of the adaptive events occurring in the gonococcus as a result of selective host pressures.  相似文献

Sexual reproductive maturity was evaluated in Acropora valida, Acropora cytherea and Acropora humilis at French Frigate Shoals, Northwest Hawaiian Islands during two consecutive summers. Acropora valida gonads matured at different rates in different habitats in both years. Spawning was inferred by the sudden disappearance of gonads of mature size. Histological sections of fertile polyps confirmed the maturity of gonads prior to spawning. An isolated colony of A. humilis spawned in early summer. Strong indications of sexually mature colonics of A. cytherea exist, but clear temporal patterns were not apparent. Lunar period of spawning in reef flat A. valida and A. humilis differed from that reported for these species from other regions. The three species did not overlap in time of spawning. Previous ideas concerning the allochthonous origin of larval recruits, as well as the absence of Acropora from high islands of the Hawaiian chain, are re-evaluated in light of new evidence for sexual reproductive capacity by native populations.  相似文献

In primates, one type of retinal ganglion cell, the parasol cell, makes gap junctions with amacrine cells, the inhibitory, local circuit neurons. To study the effects of these gap junctions, we developed a linear, mathematical model of the retinal circuitry providing input to parasol cells. Electrophysiological studies have indicated that gap junctions do not enlarge the receptive field centres of parasol cells, but our results suggest that they make other contributions to their light responses. According to our model, the coupled amacrine cells enhance the responses of parasol cells to luminance contrast by disinhibition. We also show how a mixed chemical and electrical synapse between two sets of amacrine cells presynaptic to the parasol cells might make the responses of parasol cells more transient and, therefore, more sensitive to motion. Finally, we show how coupling via amacrine cells can synchronize the firing of parasol cells. An action potential in a model parasol cell can excite neighbouring parasol cells, but only when the coupled amacrine cells also fire action potentials. Passive conduction was ineffective due to low-pass temporal filtering. Inhibition from the axons of the coupled amacrine cells also produced oscillations that might synchronize the firing of more distant ganglion cells.  相似文献

The importance of creatine kinase (E.C. 2.7.3.2) in endocrine tissues has been generally overlooked. Using a specific radiometric assay, we have demonstrated the existence of CK in the Brockmann body (principal islet) of the Coho salmon. We have purified this protein from insular tissue and concurrently purified CK from brain and muscle of the salmon. Purification characteristics, immunological cross-reactivity, and N-terminal sequence analysis have demonstrated that the predominant cytosolic CK from the Brockmann body is indistinguishable from the BB (brain) isoenzyme. Immunocytochemical studies indicated that the enzyme resides in the endocrine parenchyma. Phosphocreatine may serve as a reservoir of energy in the islet and augment its capacity to secrete hormones. The induction of CK-BB in the islet by other hormones could influence the secretion of insular hormones. Interorgan flux of the substrate creatine may be an undescribed mechanism of physiological regulation.  相似文献
