Phylogenetic analysis of 27 behavioural and life history traits for five Mediterranean sand goby species (Perciformes, Gobiidae) produced one tree with a consistency index (excluding uninformative characters) of 0.756. This tree agreed with previous molecular analyses in providing strong support for the monophyly of the sand gobies, indicating that Pomatoschistus and Knipowitschia are paraphyletic and helping to resolve the ambiguous position of Economidichthys pygmaeus, placing it as the basal member of the reduced data set. Although the tree was completely resolved, the branches above E. pygmaeus were only moderately supported in the bootstrap analysis. Overall, the behavioural data provide information that may eventually help clarify the speciation bursts within the Mediterranean sand goby clade as much as is possible. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 165 , 916–924.  相似文献

1. We describe the changes in trophic dynamics in Lake Maggiore from c. 1943 to 2002 using subfossil cladoceran data from a high resolution sediment record, long‐term contemporary data series and historical information. During this period the lake went through a eutrophication phase until 1980 followed by oligotrophication. 2. During the eutrophication period a major increase occurred in the abundance of Chydorus sphaericus, the proportion of planktonic cladocerans and total abundance of cladocerans in the sediment. Since 1980 the abundance declined again and subfossil Eubosmina mucro length and contemporary Daphnia body length increased, most probably as a result of higher abundance of invertebrate predators. 3. Changes in the fish stock composition caused by the introduction of exotic fish during the pre‐eutrophication period and a complete ban on fishing because of Dichloro‐diphenil‐ethanes (DDTs) pollution of the lake (during oligotrophication) could also be detected in the community assemblage and size structure of the sediment zooplankton. 4. We found good correspondence between trophic changes inferred from cladoceran subfossils (community composition, size and predation pressure) and contemporary data, suggesting that sediment samples can be used to infer past development in trophic dynamics, including predation by fish and pelagic invertebrates in lakes with scarce neolimnological data. 5. Furthermore, by combining palaeolimnological cladoceran data rarely obtained from contemporary samples (e.g. benthic and plant‐associated cladocerans, mucro length of bosminids) with contemporary data of organisms poorly represented in the sediment record (e.g. remains of Bythotrephes and fishes) a more complete understanding of changes in trophic dynamics was obtained. 6. The detection in the sediments of meteorological events whose effects on zooplankton had been recorded in the long‐term studies also provided evidence that eutrophication tends to override climate signals. 7. We conclude that a combined palaeo‐neolimnological approach can be a powerful tool for elucidating past changes in the trophic dynamics of lakes and the interaction with climate induced changes, not least when high resolution sediment records are available.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Four different tubulin genes were identified in the somatic nucleus (macronucleus) of Euplotes focardii , a strictly coldadapted, Antarctic ciliate: one of 1,800 bp for α-tubulin and three of 2,150, 1,900, and 1,600 bp, respectively, for β -tubulin. Preliminarily analysed for restriction fragment length polymorphisms, these genes showed remarkable differences in organisation from tubulin genes of other ciliates which live in temperate areas and were analysed in parallel with E. focardii. The complete coding sequence of the 1,600 bp β -tubulin gene was then determined and shown to contain unique structural features of potential importance for E. focardii microtubule organization and activity. Of eight unique substitutions detected, seven were concentrated in the large amino terminal domain of the molecule that directly interacts with the carboxy terminal region of α-tubulin for heterodimer formation. Sequence analysis of the cloned gene revealed, in addition, a potential new exception in the use of the genetic code by ciliates. A TAG codon was aligned in correspondence with Trp-21 which is strictly conserved in every tubulin sequence so far determined.  相似文献

Sound production of 11 Mediterranean goby species, belonging to five different genera, have been comparatively analysed on the basis of the quantitative properties of the acoustic signal emitted by the male in both the reproductive and aggressive context. The results obtained showed that three groups of species can be recognized on the basis of signal similarity: the larger sized species (genus Padogobius and Gobius paganellus ) producing tonal sounds, showing high values of pulse rate and low values of duration; the larger-sized species producing grunt sounds (genus Gobius and Zosterisessor ) with low pulse rate and low duration; and the small-sized species producing grunt sounds (genus Pomatoschistus and Knipowitschia ) with low pulse rate and high duration. The comparison between these results and those found in previous studies suggests congruence between the acoustic affinities among species and that obtained by means of morphological and genetic data. Diurnal changes in percentage loss of hydraulic conductivity (PLC), with recorded values being higher at midday than on the following morning, have been interpreted as evidence for the occurrence of cycles of xylem conduits' embolism and repair. Recent reports have suggested that diurnal PLC changes might arise as a consequence of an experimental artefact, that is, air entry into xylem conduits upon cutting stems, even if under water, while under substantial tension generated by transpiration. Rehydration procedures prior to hydraulic measurements have been recommended to avoid this artefact. In the present study, we show that xylem rehydration prior to hydraulic measurements might favour xylem refilling and embolism repair, thus leading to PLC values erroneously lower than those actually experienced by transpiring plants. When xylem tension relaxation procedures were performed on stems where refilling mechanisms had been previously inhibited by mechanical (girdling) or chemical (orthovanadate) treatment, PLC values measured in stems cut under native tension were the same as those measured after sample rehydration/relaxation. Our data call for renewed attention to the procedures of sample collection in the field and transport to the laboratory, and suggest that girdling might be a recommendable treatment prior to sample collection for PLC measurements.  相似文献

The CC16 microprotein is the main secretory product of Clara cells, which are epithelial cells lining lung airways. In crossing through the bronchoalveolar/blood barrier, CC16 diffuses passively into plasma. Serum CC16 (sCC16) has recently been proposed as a biomarker for detecting Clara cell impairments. The aim of this study was to assess if sCC16 concentrations are reduced in a group of healthy young smokers. A group of 118 healthy young males volunteered to take part in the study. Each subject answered a questionnaire, and provided blood and urine samples. Serum CC16, urinary cotinine and creatinine were measured. Median serum CC16 concentrations were lower in smokers than in non-smokers (11.3 mug l-1 vs 14.6 mug l-1; p = 0.005; N = 89 and 29, respectively) but did not correlate with either the daily or the life-time cigarette consumption, or with urinary cotinine concentrations. sCC16 did not correlate with age or body mass index in the whole study population or in the groups of smokers and non-smokers. These results suggest the reduction in sCC16 concentrations in a group of healthy young smokers may be an early effect of cigarette smoking.  相似文献
