A general procedure for evaluation of immunological relevance of synthetic peptides: peptides synthesized on paper in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Multiple continuous-flow solid-phase peptide synthesis has been adapted for synthesis of peptides on a cellulose carrier (Whatman 3MM paper). Paper-bound synthetic peptides that represent antigenic determinants of particular proteins detected antibodies against the respective proteins in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The method is applied to the synthesis, and use in site-directed serology, of four peptides derived from the gp41 glycoprotein of HIV, the Epstein-Barr virus-determined nuclear antigen-1 and VCA proteins of the Epstein-Barr virus, and the early region of human papillomavirus type 11.     

Phospholipid content in the compact and spongious musculature of the carp heart (Cyprinus carpio)

The phospholipid content of the spongious and compact musculature of the heart of the carp (Cyprinus carpio) was compared. The content of phospholipids is higher in the spongious musculature, the greatest difference being in the content of diphosphatidylglycerol: 2.53 mumol P . g-1 wet weight in the spongious layer and 1.29 mumol P . g-1 wet weight in the compact one. In both tissues plasmalogens represent 20-27% of the tissue content of choline and ethanolamine phosphoglycerides.     

The possible mutagenic effect of the occupation of TV announcer

In a group of TV announcers, a significant increase in the number of classical aberrations was detected in peripheral blood: 7.5 +/- 3.477% in comparison with 3 control groups (A - 7 healthy women matched for sex, age and place of residence, B - 9 members of TV technical staff, C - 9 actors and actresses) with a mean aberration level of 2.96 +/- 1.136. SCE numbers were not increased in the TV announcers compared to controls. An increased frequency of reproduction failure has also been noticed in TV announcers (females). A decrease in the level of aberrant cells was noticed when the announcer had been on holiday, although this was not statistically significant. The possible mutagens in the working environment of TV announcers are discussed; there is a suspicion that azodyes, present in cosmetics or other chemicals, may be the mutagenic factor.

Investigations on the hair-digestion by dermatophyta

Summary The in vitro hair cultures of 83 strains of 22 species of dermatophytes were investigated for the presence of perforating organs by our method. It was concluded from the results that perforation is not a phyletic character, although it is of use in specific delimitation. On the ground of phyletic analyses made for the former reason the grouping of species in three groups was proposed according to their complex behaviour in respect of fructification, macroconidium-production, sexual reproduction, pathogenicity, soil-inhabitancy and occasionally performation.
