Asthma is epidemic in developed and developing countries including those in the Caribbean where it is widely believed that
African dust, transported in high concentrations in the Trade Winds every year, is a major causative factor. The link between
asthma and dust in the Caribbean is based largely on anecdotal evidence that associates sharp increases in the occurrence
of asthma symptoms with hazy conditions often caused by dust. Here we report on a 2-year study of the relationship between
the daily concentrations of dust measured in on-shore Trade Winds at Barbados and pediatric asthma attendance rates at Queen
Elizabeth Hospital (QEH). We looked for large increases in QEH daily attendances in relation to daily dust concentrations
as previously suggested by anecdotal observations. We could not find any obvious relationship although there may be more subtle
linkages between dust and asthma. Our measurements show, however, that the concentration of dust in the size range under 2.5 μm
diameter is sufficiently high as to challenge United States Environmental Protection Agency air quality standards for respirable
particles. Thus, African dust may constitute a health threat of a different nature, producing symptoms less obvious than those

Current endeavor was aimed towards monitoring percent weight build-up during functional coating process on drug-layered pellets. Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is an emerging process analytical technology (PAT) tool which was employed here within quality by design (QbD) framework. Samples were withdrawn after spraying every 15-Kg cellulosic coating material during Wurster coating process of drug-loaded pellets. NIR spectra of these samples were acquired using cup spinner assembly of Thermoscientific Antaris II, followed by multivariate analysis using partial least squares (PLS) calibration model. PLS model was built by selecting various absorption regions of NIR spectra for Ethyl cellulose, drug and correlating the absorption values with actual percent weight build up determined by HPLC. The spectral regions of 8971.04 to 8250.77 cm?1, 7515.24 to 7108.33 cm?1, and 5257.00 to 5098.87 cm?1 were found to be specific to cellulose, where as the spectral region of 6004.45 to 5844.14 cm?1was found to be specific to drug. The final model gave superb correlation co-efficient value of 0.9994 for calibration and 0.9984 for validation with low root mean square of error (RMSE) values of 0.147 for calibration and 0.371 for validation using 6 factors. The developed correlation between the NIR spectra and cellulose content is useful in precise at-line prediction of functional coat value and can be used for monitoring the Wurster coating process. 相似文献

Phenotypic similarities between Australian Aboriginal People and some tribes of India were noted by T.H. Huxley during the voyage of the Rattlesnake (1846-1850). Anthropometric studies by Birdsell led to his suggestion that a migratory wave into Australia included populations with affinities to tribal Indians. Genetic evidence for an Indian contribution to the Australian gene pool is contradictory; most studies of autosomal markers have not supported this hypothesis (; and references therein). On the other hand, affinities between Australian Aboriginal People and southern Indians were suggested based on maternally inherited mitochondrial DNA. Here, we show additional DNA evidence in support of Huxley's hypothesis of an Indian-Australian connection using single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and short tandem repeats (STRs) on the nonrecombining portion of the Y chromosome (NRY). Phylogenetic analyses of STR variation associated with a major Australian SNP lineage indicated tight clustering with southern Indian/Sri Lankan Y chromosomes. Estimates of the divergence time for these Indian and Australian chromosomes overlap with important changes in the archaeological and linguistic records in Australia. These results provide strong evidence for an influx of Y chromosomes from the Indian subcontinent to Australia that may have occurred during the Holocene. 相似文献

A novel, quick, simple and highly sensitive spectrofluorimetric method was developed and validated for the determination of sitagliptin (SG) in its pharmaceutical formulations. The proposed method is based on investigation of the fluorescence spectral behavior of sitagliptin in an SDS micellar system. In an aqueous solution of phosphate buffer pH 4.0, the fluorescence intensity of SG in the presence of SDS was greatly enhanced, by 200%, i.e. twofold enhancement. The fluorescence intensity of SG was measured at 300 nm after excitation at 270 nm. The method showed good linearity in the range 0.03–10.0 µg/mL with a good correlation coefficient (r = 0.9998). The limits of detection and quantitation values were 5.31 and 16.1 ng/mL, respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied to the analysis of SG in its single and co‐formulated commercial tablets; the results were in good agreement with those obtained using a reference method. Application of the proposed method was extended to stability studies of SG after exposure to different forced degradation conditions according to the ICH guidelines, such as acidic, alkaline, thermal, photo‐ and oxidative stress.
