The morphology of white clover is very sensitive to the lightenvironment, especially to the ratio of red:far-red light andto photon irradiance. However, less is known about the effectsof blue light on clover morphogenesis. Cuttings of white cloverwere grown for 56 d in two controlled chambers receiving lightwith similar photosynthetic efficiency and phytochrome photoequilibriumstate but different levels of blue light: some plants were grownunder orange light (very low blue light, 0.02 µmol m-2s-1)or under white light containing blue light (83 µmol m-2s-1).Other plants were switched from white light to orange lightorvice versa,after 30 d. The absence of blue light modifiedthe growth habit of clover and raised the laminae in the upperlayer of the canopy by increasing petiole length, and petioleangle from the horizontal, and by raising stolons above theground surface. Moreover, the absence of blue light had no effecton total leaf area and total dry weight per plant, but increasedthe leaf area and biomass of petioles of the main axis. Largerpetioles and laminae were associated with the allocation ofmore dry weight to the petiole at the same petiole thicknessbut with thinner laminae. Aconitum napellus is a perennial European Ranunculaceae that is currently decreasing in France. Six polymorphic microsatellite markers were characterized to study the polymorphism among individuals sampled from six populations in France. The total number of alleles per locus varied from two to four. Mean observed heterozygosities at each microsatellite locus ranged from 0.05 to 0.19. This set of microsatellites offers an efficient tool for more detailed investigations on population genetic structure of a rare species that can reproduce both sexually and by vegetative spread.  相似文献

It may often be necessary to perform genetic analyses of temporal replicates to estimate the significance of spatial variation independently from that of temporal variation in order to ensure the reliability of estimates of a defined population structure. Nevertheless, temporal studies of genetic diversity remain scarce in the literature relative to the plethora of empirical studies of population structure. In vertebrates, a limited number of studies have specifically assessed the temporal stability of population structure for more than one generation. In this study, we performed a microsatellite analysis of DNA obtained from archived scales to compare the population structure among four sympatric landlocked populations of Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ) over a time frame of three to five generations. The same patterns of allele frequency distribution, θ, R ST and genetic distance estimates were observed among populations for two time periods, confirming the temporal stability of the population structure. Despite population declines and stocking during this period, no statistically significant changes in intrapopulation genetic diversity were apparent. This study illustrates the feasibility and usefulness of microsatellite analysis of temporal samples, not only to infer changes of intrapopulation genetic diversity, but also to assess the stability of population structure over a time frame of several generations.  相似文献

Forty-four study sites were established in remnant woodland in the Burdekin River catchment in tropical north-east Queensland, Australia, to assess recent (decadal) vegetation change. The aim of this study was further to evaluate whether wide-scale vegetation ‘thickening’ (proliferation of woody plants in formerly more open woodlands) had occurred during the last century, coinciding with significant changes in land management. Soil samples from several depth intervals were size separated into different soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions, which differed from one another by chemical composition and turnover times. Tropical (C4) grasses dominate in the Burdekin catchment, and thus δ13C analyses of SOC fractions with different turnover times can be used to assess whether the relative proportion of trees (C3) and grasses (C4) had changed over time. However, a method was required to permit standardized assessment of the δ13C data for the individual sites within the 13 Mha catchment, which varied in soil and vegetation characteristics. Thus, an index was developed using data from three detailed study sites and global literature to standardize individual isotopic data from different soil depths and SOC fractions to reflect only the changed proportion of trees (C3) to grasses (C4) over decadal timescales. When applied to the 44 individual sites distributed throughout the Burdekin catchment, 64% of the sites were shown to have experienced decadal vegetation thickening, while 29% had remained stable and the remaining 7% had thinned. Thus, the development of this index enabled regional scale assessment and comparison of decadal vegetation patterns without having to rely on prior knowledge of vegetation changes or aerial photography.  相似文献

A common characteristic of many invasive herbivorous insects is their ability to utilize a broad range of host plants. By using various hosts in phenological succession, multivoltine herbivores may increase the number of successful annual generations, at the same time as potentially increasing their overall fitness. To achieve such success, herbivores must be able to develop efficiently on the nutritional resources offered by their hosts. The oriental fruit moth Cydia (= Grapholita) molesta (Busck) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) is one of the most damaging invasive insect species. Peach (Prunus persica) is its primary host, whereas the pome fruits apple (Malus × domestica Borkh) and pear (Pyrus communis) are considered as secondary hosts. In many parts of its geographical range, including southern Europe, populations of the moth switch from peach to apple or pear orchards during the growing season. The present study tests whether this temporal switch is supported by the physiological capability of the larvae with respect to developing efficiently on fruits of these taxonomically‐related host plants. Larvae are reared on peach, apple or pear fruits; several life‐history traits are measured; and correlations between the traits are calculated. The results obtained show that larvae do not have the same physiological capability with respect to using apple or pear fruits as hosts compared with using peach fruit. Pear fruit in particular is a sub‐optimal diet. These findings suggest that, in the case of continuous geographical expansion, concomitantly with global warming, apple orchards might support oriental fruit moth populations better than pear orchards, and that the switch onto novel hosts might be accompanied by restricted population growth.  相似文献

Relationships between odor properties and volatile chemical composition were explored on 39 cocultures of three different yeasts, three Geotrichum candidum and five bacteria, commonly used in bacteria and mold surface ripened cheese. Sensory profiling was performed by ten trained judges by scoring the intensity of 14 odor attributes. At the same time, the volatile compounds of the cocultures were extracted and analyzed by dynamic headspace gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Sensory and instrumental data were compared and correlated using correlation analysis and partial least squares regression analysis. The sample plot including the whole set of samples evidenced a clustering of the associations containing the yeast strain Kluyveromyces lactis and any bacteria. They developed strong fruity olfactory notes related to their high content of ethyl esters and various alcohols. The sample plot on a restricted set of samples evidenced the fruity characteristics of Debaryomyces hansenii and bacteria associations and the cheesy odors of Yarrowia lipolytica and Geotrichum candidum cocultures that produced sulfur compounds.  相似文献

Hypothenemus hampei is the most important insect pest of coffee and has spread to most coffee‐growing countries worldwide. There have been very few studies and none have addressed the population genetics of the beetle using microsatellite markers. In the present study, 683 individuals collected from 37 locations in 18 countries worldwide were screened at nine polymorphic microsatellite loci. Sixty‐five out the 683 and six additional individuals were analyzed on a 400‐bp fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene. Bayesian clustering analysis and phylogenetic approaches were used to infer the genetic structure of H. hampei over the sampling that encompassed almost all its range. Microsatellite markers made it possible to achieve sufficiently significant power for the delineation of five morphocryptic evolutionary units. Supported by 27 new COI haplotypes, an unexpected considerably high level of genetic differentiation and genetic divergence was revealed between five geographically delineated clusters. Both markers and approaches showed that the clusters included specimens from (1) Ethiopia, (2) Kenya and Uganda, (3) Brazil, (4) Central America excluding Jamaica, and (5) all samples from Asia, West Africa, and Jamaica. When hybridization modifies the genetic constitution of individuals or populations, the stability of phenotypic development may either decrease or increase, depending on the divergence in the gene systems that control the development between the hybridizing taxa, i.e. on the relative effects of outbreeding and heterosis. In genetically closely related species, strong heterotic effects are less likely to occur, and hence hybridization may be expected to cause an overall decrease in developmental stability (DS) resulting from the disruption of coadapted gene complexes. To test this hypothesis, we experimentally crossed two closely related species of Ceratitis fruit flies and compared multiple-trait fluctuating asymmetry (FA, a measure of DS) in male and female offspring between parental species and two crossbred types. All traits measured play an important role in the fanning and buzzing behaviour associated with male courtship in Ceratitis , or are located on body parts involved in this behaviour. As predicted, hybrid offspring developed more asymmetrically than offspring of either parental species – most notably in meristic traits – and the increase in FA was consistently and significantly stronger in females than in males. The fact that males buffered their development more efficiently than females is in concordance with the presumed between-sex variation in functionality, and hence cost of asymmetry, of the measured traits. Absence of a similar sex difference in DS among parental offspring is believed to result from overall weak association between DS and FA in the absence of genetic stress, resulting from the random nature of the underlying processes that trigger asymmetric development.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 93 , 579–588.  相似文献

Proteases, like thrombin, trypsin, cathepsins, or tryptase, can signal to cells by cleaving in a specific manner, a family of G protein-coupled receptors, the protease-activated receptors (PARs). Proteases cleave the extracellular N-terminal domain of PARs to reveal tethered ligand domains that bind to and activate the receptors. Recent evidence has supported the involvement of PARs in inflammation and pain. Activation of PAR1, PAR2, and PAR4 either by proteinases or by selective agonists causes inflammation inducing most of the cardinal signs of inflammation: swelling, redness, and pain. Recent studies suggest a crucial role for the different PARs in innate immune response. The role of PARs in the activation of pain pathways appears to be dual. Subinflammatory doses of PAR2 agonists induce hyperalgesia and allodynia, and PAR2 activation has been implicated in the generation of inflammatory hyperalgesia. In contrast, subinflammatory doses of PAR1 or PAR4 increase nociceptive threshold, inhibiting inflammatory hyperalgesia, thereby acting as analgesic mediators. PARs have to be considered as an additional subclass of G protein-coupled receptors that are active participants to inflammation and pain responses and that could constitute potential novel therapeutic targets.  相似文献
