The invasive freshwater snail Tarebia granifera (Lamarck, 1822) was first reported in South Africa in 1999 and it has become widespread across the country, with some evidence to suggest that it reduces benthic macroinvertebrate biodiversity. The current study aimed to identify the primary abiotic drivers behind abundance patterns of T. granifera, by comparing the current abundance of the snail in three different regions, and at three depths, of the highly modified Nseleni River in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Tarebia granifera was well established throughout the Nseleni River system, with an overall preference for shallow waters and seasonal temporal patterns of abundance. Although it is uncertain what the ecological impacts of the snail in this system are, its high abundances suggest that it should be controlled where possible and prevented from invading other systems in the region. 相似文献

Some pollination systems, such as buzz‐pollination, are associated with floral morphologies that require a close physical interaction between floral sexual organs and insect visitors. In these systems, a pollinator's size relative to the flower may be an important feature determining whether the visitor touches both male and female sexual organs and thus transfers pollen between plants efficiently. To date, few studies have addressed whether in fact the “fit” between flower and pollinator influences pollen transfer, particularly among buzz‐pollinated species. Here we use Solanum rostratum, a buzz‐pollinated plant with dimorphic anthers and mirror‐image flowers, to investigate whether the morphological fit between the pollinator's body and floral morphology influences pollen deposition. We hypothesized that when the size of the pollinator matches the separation between the sexual organs in a flower, more pollen should be transferred to the stigma than when the visitor is either too small or too big relative to the flower. To test this hypothesis, we exposed flowers of S. rostratum with varying levels of separation between sexual organs, to bumblebees (Bombus terrestris) of different sizes. We recorded the number of visits received, pollen deposition, and fruit and seed production. We found higher pollen deposition when bees were the same size or bigger than the separation between anther and stigma within a flower. We found a similar, but not statistically significant pattern for fruit set. In contrast, seed set was more likely to occur when the size of the flower exceeded the size of the bee, suggesting that other postpollination processes may be important in translating pollen receipt to seed set. Our results suggest that the fit between flower and pollinator significantly influences pollen deposition in this buzz‐pollinated species. We speculate that in buzz‐pollinated species where floral morphology and pollinators interact closely, variation in the visitor's size may determine whether it acts mainly as a pollinator or as a pollen thief (i.e., removing pollen rewards but contributing little to pollen deposition and fertilization). 相似文献

Two new species of teleost blood fluke belonging to the sanguinicolid genus Paradeontacylix are described from the greater amberjack, Seriola dumerili, i.e. Paradeontacylix ibericus n. sp. from the Iberian Peninsula and Paradeontacylix balearicus n. sp. from the Balearic Islands. P. ibericus n. sp. and P. balearicus n. sp. show morphological similarities with Paradeontacylix kampachi and Paradeontacylix grandispinus respectively, which occur in mixed infection in S. dumerili from Japan. Multivariate analysis of morphometrical data provided statistical evidence for the separation of four species. However, component by component analysis did not show statistically significant differences between P. balearicus and P. grandispinus. Molecular data based on rITS2 and mCO1 gene sequences also supported the separation into four species. Morphological and molecular data were used to examine phylogenetic relationships between Paradeontacylix species from S. dumerili and other species in the genus. The results coincided in revealing two main branches with P. kampachi+P. ibericus and (((P. grandispinus+P. balearicus) Paradeontacylix sanguinicoloides) Paradeontacylix godfreyi). Paradeontacylix odhneri, for which little data are available, was located basal in a separate branch. This is the only species of Paradeontacylix which parasitizes a non-carangid host which might probably explain the separation from the other species. Paired similarities between the Japanese and the Mediterranean species, despite the large geographic distance, could be explained by the speciation of parasite geminate lines before host separation by tectonic events. Consequently, geographic and historical isolation support the morphological and genetic differences leading to the evolution of the new species described here. 相似文献

We report photoinitiated chemical vapor deposition (piCVD), a gentle synthetic method for the preparation of ultrathin films (approximately 100 nm) of the hydrogel poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA). piCVD occurs near room temperature and requires only mild vacuum conditions. The deposited films swell rapidly and reversibly in buffer solution, and the swelling properties can be controlled via the deposition conditions. Analysis of the swelling data indicates that the mesh size of the hydrogel creates a selectively permeable coating. The mesh is large enough to allow small molecule analytes to permeate the film but small enough to prevent the transport of large biomolecules such as proteins. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) shows that the films decrease nonspecific adhesion of the protein albumin by nearly 8-fold over bare silicon. A dry process, piCVD is suitable for coating particles with diameters as small as 5 microm. The absence of solvents and plasmas in piCVD allows films to be directly synthesized on optode sensors without degradation of sensitivity or response time. 相似文献

Histidinol dehydrogenase (HDH, EC EC1.1.1.23) catalyses the final step in the biosynthesis of histidine and constitutes an attractive novel target for the development of new agents against the pathogenous, bacteria Brucella suis. A small library of new HDH inhibitors based on the L-histidinylphenylsulfonyl hydrazide scaffold has been synthesized and their inhibitory activity investigated. The obtained results demonstrate that modification of the group between the histidinyl moiety and the phenyl ring constitutes an important structural factor for the design of effective HDH inhibitors. 相似文献

Crosstalk between integrins is involved in the regulation of various cell functions including cell migration. Here we identify the interplay between the integrins αvβ5/β6 and α2β1 during cell migration toward type I collagen. Human colon cancer cell lines HT29-D4 and SW480 were used as cell models. To improve our understanding of the consequences of αvβ5/β6 function on α2β1, we decreased the expression of αv integrins by either siRNA or lysosomal targeting strategies or inhibited their function using, as antagonists, blocking antibodies or disintegrins. In all cases, we observed a greatly enhanced α2β1 integrin-dependent cell migration associated with focal adhesion rearrangements and increased outside-in signaling as demonstrated by elevated phosphorylation of focal adhesion kinase and MAPKinase (ERK1 and ERK2). The αvβ5/β6-dependent limitation of α2β1 function could be overridden by TS2/16, an activating anti-β1 antibody. Interestingly, compared to control cells, the pharmacological inhibition of PI3Kinase or the siRNA-mediated knockdown of AKT had little effect on the high α2β1-mediated cell migration observed in the absence of αv integrins or following activation of α2β1 integrins by the TS2/16. These results suggest that integrins αvβ5/β6 repress α2β1 possibly by interfering with their activation process and thereby modify the cell signaling regulation of α2β1-mediated migration. 相似文献

Anti-idiotype monoclonal antibody (mAb) 1E10 was generated by immunizing BALB/c mice with an Ab1 mAb which recognizes NeuGc-containing
gangliosides, sulfatides and some tumor antigens. 1E10 mAb induces therapeutic effects in a primary breast carcinoma and a
melanoma model. However, the tumor immunity mechanisms have not been elucidated. Here we show that aluminum hydroxide-precipitated
1E10 mAb immunization induced anti-metastatic effect in the 3LL-D122 Lewis Lung carcinoma, a poorly immunogenic and highly
metastatic model in C57BL/6 mice. The therapeutic effect was associated to the increment of T cells infiltrating metastases,
the reduction of new blood vessels formation and the increase of apoptotic tumor cells in lung nodules. Interestingly, active
immunization does not induce measurable antibodies to the 1E10 mAb, the NeuGc-GM3 or tumor cells, which may suggest a different
