The development of the jugular and cerebral veins and adjacent lymphatic vessels in Hepsetus, Salmo, Amia, Acipenser, Neoceratodus, Scyllium and Squalus has been studied on a large embryological material. The reconstruction method has been applied. There has been much confusion in the literature on head veins. This is partly due to the rather schematic investigations of e.g. van Gelderen, and partly to the publications of de Beer and Holmgren, paying no regard to the lymphatic vessels. The currently new features on the v. capitis medialis are that in adult fishes a larger part of the vein remains than was earlier believed. It usually consists of three portions. No secondary vein takes part in the constitution of the jugular vein, as was supposed by de Beer, Holmgren and others. In actinopterygians the secondary vein is in reality represented by the anterior portion of the v. cardinalis anterior as well as of all the v. capitis lateralis, and in elasmobranchs it is only represented by the former portion. The elasmobranchian (except Squalus ) jugular vein is instead formed from the v. capitis lateralis, and in teleostomes and Squalus it is developed from two veins, viz. the anterior portion of the v. capitis medialis and all the v. capitis lateralis. The latter vein is formed from two (teleostomes) or three (elasmobranchs) loops. The v. cardinalis anterior becomes completely atrophied in Squalus , and partly atrophied in Acipenser, Amia and Neoceratodus. The development of the three main cerebral veins is described. van Gelderen's classification of the v. cerebralis media is criticized. And so also is his hypothesis for the evolution of the head veins in fishes. It is suggested that the Hepsetus type is primitive and that the Acipenser and Amia types have evolved from it or from a similar type. Neoceratodus and Squalus have rather specialised types, which seem to have evolved separately right from the base of the system.  相似文献

ZOOPLANKTON OF LAKES MUTANDA, BUNYONYI AND MULEHE   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Quantitative samples of zooplankton from three lakes in the Kigezi District of Uganda have been studied. The systematics of the zooplankton are considered, and some of the identifications given by Worthington & Ricardo (1936) in a previous study of one of these lakes are revised.
Lake Mulehe is the shallowest of the three lakes and contains the largost standing crop of zooplankton. This is in agreement with chemical data which indicato that the supply of nutrient salts in Lake Mulehe is higher than in the other two lakes.
In October 1962 the zooplankton of Lake Mutanda was characterized by the relative abundance of three species of Daphnia which were not found in the samples from the other lakes, although two of these species were present in Lake Bunyonyi in 1931. Rotifers were sparse in Lako Mutands, but here dominant by Tetramastix opoliensis. Lake Bunyonyi was richer in rotifers, but here the dominant species was Keratella tropica , whilo in Lake Mulehe the dominant rotifer was Synchaeta pectinata.
The zooplankton of Lake Mutanda in October 1962 was similar in composition to that of Lake Bunyonyi in 1931, but in 1962 the zooplankton of Lake Bunyonyi was more like that of Lake Mulehe. The possible causos of this change are discussed.  相似文献

Zrzavý’s arguments against the critical analyses of data supporting the Ecdysozoa hypothesis (Wägele et al., J. Zool. Syst. Evol. Res. 37, 211–223, 1999) are discussed. Zrzavý does not understand that the same basic principle of a priori weighting can be applied to sequence data as well as to morphological characters. Quality of evidence is the same as probability of homology, which is estimated from the number of discernible identical details. In sequences it is the number of identical nucleotides. Spectral analyses, dismissed by Zrzavý, visualize patterns of putative homologies present in alignments and also the number of positions supporting splits by chance alone. In cases in which old phylogenetic signals for a given monophylum are eroded in a gene, plesiomorphies and chance patterns will have strong influence on tree topologies and spectra. If plesiomorphies are a cause of errors, the addition of taxa that shorten internal branches is a remedy, although, in many cases such taxa may be extinct. The place of a priori estimations of data quality in a sequence of steps necessary for a phylogenetic analysis is shown. Morphological complexity is used as a proxy for a complex genetic basis and is used as a major criterion to compare characters of the Ecdysozoa and the Articulata. The details associated with the character ‘complex cuticle’ are discussed. Neither moulting nor the known components of the cuticle are novelties occurring only in Ecdysozoa. A published total evidence analysis is used to show that the number of coded characters does not necessarily reflect the quality of the data set. Zrzavý’s misunderstanding of the role of evolutionary scenarios is clarified and the importance of the use of additional biological data for plausibility arguments is explained. Plausibility arguments in favour of the Articulata hypothesis rely on facts found in functional morphology and in the fossil record. Zrzavý’s critique follows the actual mainstream but does not uncover logical mistakes or erroneous data analyses in the work of 86 . It is concluded that the Articulata hypothesis is a well‐founded alternative to the Ecdysozoa; it is based on much better morphological evidence and supported by plausibility arguments that currently do not exist for the Ecdysozoa.  相似文献

Metazoa-level universal single-copy orthologs (mzl-USCOs) are universally applicable markers for DNA taxonomy in animals that can replace or supplement single-gene barcodes. Previously, mzl-USCOs from target enrichment data were shown to reliably distinguish species. Here, we tested whether USCOs are an evenly distributed, representative sample of a given metazoan genome and therefore able to cope with past hybridization events and incomplete lineage sorting. This is relevant for coalescent-based species delimitation approaches, which critically depend on the assumption that the investigated loci do not exhibit autocorrelation due to physical linkage. Based on 239 chromosome-level assembled genomes, we confirmed that mzl-USCOs are genetically unlinked for practical purposes and a representative sample of a genome in terms of reciprocal distances between USCOs on a chromosome and of distribution across chromosomes. We tested the suitability of mzl-USCOs extracted from genomes for species delimitation and phylogeny in four case studies: Anopheles mosquitos, Drosophila fruit flies, Heliconius butterflies and Darwin's finches. In almost all instances, USCOs allowed delineating species and yielded phylogenies that corresponded to those generated from whole genome data. Our phylogenetic analyses demonstrate that USCOs may complement single-gene DNA barcodes and provide more accurate taxonomic inferences. Combining USCOs from sources that used different versions of ortholog reference libraries to infer marker orthology may be challenging and, at times, impact taxonomic conclusions. However, we expect this problem to become less severe as the rapidly growing number of reference genomes provides a better representation of the number and diversity of organismal lineages.  相似文献

Background

For decades cichlid fishes (Perciformes: Cichlidae) of the East African cichlid radiations (Teleostei: Cichlidae) have served as natural experimental subjects for the study of speciation processes and the search for potential speciation key factors. Despite numerous phylogenetic studies dealing with their intragroup relationships, surprisingly little is known about the phylogenetic placement and time of origin of this enigmatic group. We used multilocus DNA-sequence data from five nuclear and four mitochondrial genes and refined divergence time estimates to fill this knowledge gap.  相似文献

Martialinae are pale, eyeless and probably hypogaeic predatory ants. Morphological character sets suggest a close relationship to the ant subfamily Leptanillinae. Recent analyses based on molecular sequence data suggest that Martialinae are the sister group to all extant ants. However, by comparing molecular studies and different reconstruction methods, the position of Martialinae remains ambiguous. While this sister group relationship was well supported by Bayesian partitioned analyses, Maximum Likelihood approaches could not unequivocally resolve the position of Martialinae. By re-analysing a previous published molecular data set, we show that the Maximum Likelihood approach is highly appropriate to resolve deep ant relationships, especially between Leptanillinae, Martialinae and the remaining ant subfamilies. Based on improved alignments, alignment masking, and tree reconstructions with a sufficient number of bootstrap replicates, our results strongly reject a placement of Martialinae at the first split within the ant tree of life. Instead, we suggest that Leptanillinae are a sister group to all other extant ant subfamilies, whereas Martialinae branch off as a second lineage. This assumption is backed by approximately unbiased (AU) tests, additional Bayesian analyses and split networks. Our results demonstrate clear effects of improved alignment approaches, alignment masking and data partitioning. We hope that our study illustrates the importance of thorough, comprehensible phylogenetic analyses using the example of ant relationships.  相似文献

For many insect taxa, larval morphology plays a decisive role in various fields like taxonomy, phylogeny or ecology. However, species identification is usually based on imaginal characters and the identification of larvae depends upon an established link to unequivocally identified imagines. This taxonomic correspondence of larvae and imagines is far from being established in many odonate species. We have employed a molecular approach to link larval and adult specimens in Tauriphila argo (Hagen, 1869). The sequenced mt SSU gene fragments of the reared female, supposedly a T. argo female, and a clearly identified male specimen of the species were identical. However, the larva of the reared female clearly differed from the described T. argo larva, previously matched to the species. From this observation, we conclude that the previously described larva of T. argo does not belong to this species because of too many phenotypic differences that far exceed the generally observed intraspecific variation.

It can be foreseen that the molecular approach will prove to be effective in identifying unknown larvae in many insect species. Additionally, the discrimination of sibling species or the linkage of allotypes and holotypes will become feasible with this approach.  相似文献

Colonies of Myzus persicae and Brevicoryne brassicae were established on artificial diets and the honeydew produced by them collected on aluminium foils. The diets were later exchanged for others containing a range of 14C-phorate concentrations. The honey-dew produced while feeding on the treated diets was collected separately and mortalities were recorded. The diets, aphids and their honeydew were subsequently analysed. About 1.6% of the doses applied initially were found in the diets at the end of the bio-assay period. Thin-layer chromatography of diets containing LC50 concentrations of insecticides showed that phorate and its metabolites were present in similar proportions. The LC50 values were 15.5 nM and 277 nM phorate equivalents for B. brassicae and M. persicae respectively.  相似文献

In the summer and early autumn of 1960, 1961 and 1962, noctule bats flying low, taking house crickets as these flew from a municipal rubbish tip, were captured in mist nets, ringed, released and in many cases recaptured a number of times. The flying bats showed no fear of human beings or predatory birds and did not learn to avoid the net. In June and July of each year the majority of bats caught were adult females, the flying young of the year first appearing in August though some did not fly until September and October. Young males did not reach sexual maturity in the year of their birth, though five out of fourteen females recaptured at a year old did. There was a considerable movement of adult males in the late summer, adult bats being captured in approximately equal numbers of both sexes during August and September. In October the females seemed to disappear, the majority of the bats caught during that month being males: by November the crickets had ceased to fly and no more bats could be captured though a few wero still flying on warm nights. There was a marked difference in feeding behaviour over these three years, the bats concentrating more on crickets in 1960 than in 1961 and 1962. Though the differences are not statistically significant there were indications of an increase in body weight between July and October in the years when less cricket feeding was occurring. About 50 per cent of the females captured in each of the years 1960 and 1961 were recaptured feeding on the same site in the following year: the recovery rate of males was about 30 per cent in 1961, 60 per cent in 1962.  相似文献
