Summary This study examined the water relations and growth responses of Uniola paniculata (sea oats) to (1) three watering regimes and (2) four controlled water-table depths. Uniola paniculata is frequently the dominant foredune grass along much of the southeastern Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States, but its distribution is limited in Louisiana. Throughout most of its range, U. paniculata tends to dominate and be well adapted to the most exposed areas of the dune where soil moisture is low. Dune elevations in Louisiana, however, rarely exceed 2 m, and as a result the depth to the water table is generally shallow. We hypothesized that if U. paniculata grows very near the water-table, as it may in Louisiana, it will display signs of water-logging stress. This study demonstrated that excessive soil moisture resulting from inundation or shallow water-table depth has a greater negative effect on plant growth than do low soil moisture conditions. Uniola paniculata's initial response to either drought or inundation was a reduction of leaf (stomatal) conductance and a concomitant decrease in leaf elongation. However, plants could recover from drought-induced leaf xylem pressures of less than-3.3 MPa, but prolonged inundation killed the plants. Waterlogging stress (manifested in significantly reduced leaf stomatal conductances and reduced biomass production) was observed in plants grown at 0.3 m above the water table. This stress was relieved, however, at an elevation of 0.9 m above the water table. As the elevation was increased from 0.9 to 2.7 m, there were no signs of drought stress nor a stimulation in growth due to lower soil moisture. We concluded that although U. paniculata's moisture-conserving traits adapt it well to the dune environment, this species can grow very well at an elevation of only 0.9 m above the water table. Field measurements of water-table depth in three Louisiana populations averaged about 1.3 m. Therefore, the observed limited distribution of U. paniculata along the Louisiana coast apparently cannot be explained by water-logging stress induced by the low dune elevations and the corresponding shallow water-table depth.  相似文献

Unilateral pulse ultraviolet irradiation caused positively phototropic coiling (> 180°) and curvature (≤ 180°) in the growth zone of dark-grown broom sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor Moench, cv. Acme Broomcorn and Sekishokuzairai Fukuyama) first internodes. Coiling was induced by irradiation at 257 to 302 nm, and proceeded to develop almost linearly during 72 h or more involving new tissue produced after irradiation. Curvature, caused at 308 to 413 nm and by red light, developed rapidly during the first several hours then slowly to cease by about 24 h, and did not surpass 120° even at the optimum photon fluences. Action spectra were higher towards shorter wavelengths, having a shoulder at about 287 nm, and could not separate the two photoresponses. The curvature was partially but markedly suppressed by far-red following the ultraviolet irradiation, whereas the coiling was not affected. Possible involvement of a specific UV-B photoreceptor and phytochrome in curvature and of a UV-C photoreceptor in coiling is discussed.  相似文献

A greenhouse experiment was conducted to examine the effects of salinity and flooding level on interstitial solute speciation and solute uptake byPanicum hemitomum grown on intact marsh substrates. The experimental set-up consisted of a factorial arrangement of treatments (5 salinity levels×3 flooding levels) with 4 replications.Salinity treatments with the addition of salt (Instant Oceanr) successfully increased interstitial pore water conductivities and resulted in significantly different treatment means. Redox potentials and proton activities were significantly higher in the drained treatment, with only minor differences between the two flooded treatments. There was not a significant pH effect due to salinity, although a significant interaction between salinity and flooding level was observed. Analysis of variance suggested that electro-chemical and interstitial solute behaviour could significantly be described by salinity and flooding treatments.GEOCHEM calculations were performed in order to relate leaf concentrations to ion activities in interstitial soil solutions. Leaf contents of Mg, Ca, K, Mn, and Cu were significantly correlated with the activities of corresponding ions in the interstitial pore water. However, most of the variabilitiy in leaf metal content could be accounted for by treatment effects. Regression analysis showed that the ion activities explained less than 25% of the variability in leaf metal content.  相似文献

Severity is recognized as an important attribute of disturbance in many plant communities. However, the effects of disturbances of different severity on patterns of regeneration in oligohaline marsh vegetation have not been experimentally examined. In these communities, a critical difference in the effects of disturbance severity may be whether the vegetation dies as a result of the disturbance or is merely damaged and hence capable of resprouting. We described the regeneration of vegetation in two Louisiana marsh community types, one dominated by Sagittaria lancifolia L. and the other by Spartina patens (Ait.) Muhl., following three levels of disturbance: no disturbance, a nonlethal disturbance, and a lethal disturbance. In the nonlethal disturbance, aboveground vegetation was clipped to simulate common disturbances such as fire and herbivory that remove aboveground vegetation but leave rhizomes intact. In the lethal disturbance vegetation was killed using herbicide to simulate disturbances causing plant mortality such as wrack deposition, sedimentation, scouring, and flooding following fire or herbivory. Regeneration was assessed over a 2-year period by measuring plant species richness, relative abundance, relative dominance, cover, and final biomass. To elucidate mechanisms for observed responses of vegetation, the species composition of the seed bank, light penetration, water level, salinity, and soil redox potential were evaluated. Despite differences in the structure of undisturbed vegetation in the two community types, they exhibited the same overall pattern of regeneration. Following nonlethal disturbance, the dominant species resprouted and quickly reestablished the structure of the vegetation. In contrast, recolonization following lethal disturbance occurred primarily via seedling recruitment, which resulted in marked shifts in community structure that persisted throughout the study. While the two communities responded similarly overall to disturbance, the response of individual species was not uniform; abundance, dominance, biomass, or cover increased for some species but decreased for others in response to disturbance. Seed bank species occurred in the vegetation following lethal disturbance in the Spartina community and in both disturbed and undisturbed plots in the Sagittaria community, indicating that the seed bank is a source of propagules for regeneration and maintenance of oligohaline marshes. Of the environmental variables measured, light level was most closely related to the effect of disturbance severity on community structure. Our results suggest that lethal and nonlethal disturbances have differential effects on regeneration of vegetation that can create pattern in oligohaline marshes communities. Martinez-Salas, José, Richard Mendelssohn, William M. Abraham, Bernard Hsiao, and Tahir Ahmed. Inhibition of allergic airway responses by inhaled low-molecular-weight heparins:molecular-weight dependence. J. Appl.Physiol. 84(1): 222-228, 1998.Inhaled heparin prevents antigen-induced bronchoconstriction and inhibitsanti-immunoglobulin E-mediated mast cell degranulation. We hypothesizedthat the antiallergic action of heparin may be molecular weightdependent. Therefore, we studied the effects of three differentlow-molecular-weight fractions of heparin [medium-, low-, andultralow-molecular-weight heparin (MMWH, LMWH, ULMWH,respectively)] on the antigen-induced acute bronchoconstrictorresponse (ABR) and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) in allergic sheep.Specific lung resistance was measured in 22 sheep before and afterairway challenge with Ascarissuum antigen, without and afterpretreatment with inhaled fractionated heparins at doses of0.31-5.0 mg/kg. Airway responsiveness was estimated before and 2 hpostantigen as the cumulative provocating dose of carbachol in breathunits that increased specific lung resistance by 400%. Allfractionated heparins caused a dose-dependent inhibition of ABR andAHR. ULMWH was the most effective fraction, with the inhibitory dosecausing 50% protection (ID50)against ABR of 0.5 mg/kg, whereasID50 values of LMWH and MMWH were1.25 and 1.8 mg/kg, respectively. ULMWH was also the most effective fraction in attenuating AHR; theID50 values for ULMWH, LMWH, andMMWH were 0.5, 2.5, and 4.7 mg/kg, respectively. These data suggestthat 1) fractionatedlow-molecular-weight heparins attenuate antigen-induced ABR and AHR;2) there is an inverse relationship between the antiallergic activity of heparin fractions and molecular weight; and 3) ULMWH is the mosteffective fraction preventing allergic bronchoconstriction and airwayhyperresponsiveness.

The protein Tarin 1, from Colocasia esculenta, was expressed in Nicotiana tabacum. Bioassays were done on plants expressing Tarin 1 at different levels using Spodoptera frugiperda larvae, various bacteria and fungi and the root‐knot nematode Meloidogyne javanica. It was found that S. frugiperda larvae fed on transformed plants had retarded and lower pupation, lower accumulated biomass and higher mortality rate than larvae fed on control plants. Also, Tarin 1 was found to inhibit the growth in vitro of Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato. For Meloidogyne javanica, both relative replication and root damage were greater in control plants than in transformed plants, but the results were not statistically significant. This work illustrates the effects of plants expressing Tarin 1, on the growth and development of insects and bacteria, and shows its potential for pest management.  相似文献

The effects of waterlogging and salinity (25 or 325 mol m 3 NaCl) stressors on the anatomy and metabolism of the marsh grasses 5. alterniflora Loisel. and S. patens Aiton (Muhl.) were investigated in a V factorial greenhouse experiment over 30 d. Waterlogging and salinity in combination resulted in anatomical and metabolic responses in both species. Waterlogging reduced soil redox potential and decreased root-specific gravity significantly in both species. The inadequacy of aerenchyma development under hypoxia to support aerobic root respiration in S. patens was indicated by significant increases in root alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity of 1,752% and 420%, respectively, in the low and high salinity treatments. ADH activity was not increased significantly by flooding of S. alterniflora. Proline concentrations in roots and leaves were low at low salinities and increased significantly at high salinities in both species, but only under drained conditions. Decrease in leaf elongation by high salinity occurred in drained, but not flooded treatments in both species. Under flooded conditions, leaf elongation was significantly greater in S. alterniflora than S. patens. Greatest leaf elongation occurred in flooded low salinity S. alterniflora plants that had the least proline. Although both species are adapted to waterlogging and salinity, S. alterniflora appears to be more tolerant of reducing soil conditions and less responsive to higher salinity than S. patens.  相似文献

The lifespan and fertility of albino sand rats were found to be severely reduced in comparison with a laboratory colony of brown sand rats. The albinos were also much more susceptible to diabetes, as judged by their glucose tolerance. In fact, untreated albinos had a higher incidence of diabetic response than coloured sand rats fed a diabetogenic diet. The albino sand rats reproduced poorly because of a reduction in male fertility. Circulating testosterone levels and seminal vesicle weights were reduced in the albinos. It is speculated that the reduction in reproductive capacity is related to diabetes.  相似文献
