Observations on functional morphology and results from experiments demonstrate that setiferous epipods compose the major gill-cleaning mechanism in a penaeoid shrimp, Rimapenaeus similis. Epipods on the second maxillipeds and on pereopods 1-3 are equipped with long setae bearing an array of digitate scale setules. These multidenticulate setae reach to most gills and are jostled among them during limb movements. Experiments were performed in which epipods were removed from the gill chamber on one side (experimental) but not the other (control); treated animals were exposed to fouling in a recirculating water system for 2 weeks. Particulate fouling, measured by reduction in relative gill transparency, was significantly greater on experimental than control gills. The pereopodal exopods, not previously implicated in gill cleaning in any decapod, were similarly identified as important gill-cleaning structures. Equipped with long multidenticulate setae like those on the epipods, exopods sweep back and forth over the gill filaments just under the gill cover, areas not reached by the epipods. Exopod-ablation experiments were conducted that showed that exopods prevent particulate fouling on gill surfaces over which they sweep. The similarity in action of the passive gill-cleaning system of R. similis to that of crayfish (Bauer [1998] Invert Biol 117:29-143) suggests the hypothesis that the epipodal and exopodal cleaning setae of R. similis are ineffective against epibionts. The reduction in epipodal and exopodal cleaning systems that occurs in the Penaeoidea is hypothesized to be compensated for by increased development of gill-cleaning setae on the branchiostegite, scaphognathite, or other structures. 相似文献

Although various species of acanthocephalan parasites can increase the vulnerability of their amphipod intermediate hosts to predation, particularly by altering their photophobic behaviour, their influence on the structure of amphipod communities and the success of invader species has so far received little attention. We compared the prevalence and behavioural influence of a fish acanthocephalan parasite, Pomphorhynchus laevis, in two species of amphipods, Gammarus pulex and Gammarus roeseli in sympatry in the river Ouche (Burgundy, eastern France). There, G. pulex is a resident species, whereas G. roeseli is a recent coloniser. Both uninfected G. pulex and G. roeseli were strongly photophobic, although less so in the invading species. However, there was no significant difference in reaction to light between infected and uninfected G. roeseli, whereas infected G. pulex were strongly photophilic. We discuss our results in relation to the parasite's ability to manipulate invading host species, the possibility that resistant individuals have been selected during the invasion process, and the role that acanthocephalan parasites can play in shaping the structure of amphipod communities. 相似文献

Protein secretion by the human endometrium was studied in vitro in medium after incubation of tissue minces (n = 10) or glands isolated by collagenase digestion (n = 4) from tissues obtained at the time of curettage from normal women. Samples were incubated in a serum-free medium for 24 h at 38 degrees C in the presence of radiolabeled methionine. Dialyzed medium from each sample was subjected to two-dimensional gel separation, and detected by protein staining. Although 5 of the 27 proteins were considered to be present in the labeling experiments by only one of the three observers, there was agreement about the presence of the 22 others. In addition, the observers categorized the proteins into three groups for purposes of analysis: a) those associated with the follicular phase of the cycle; b) those associated with the luteal phase; and c) those not cycle-related. One protein triplet, labeled #27, showed a significant relation to the luteal phase (p less than 0.01). A complete lack of similarity between the pattern of labeled proteins obtained from the medium and labeled proteins obtained from lysates of cells incubated in the same experiments makes it unlikely that cellular lysis, as opposed to secretion, contributed to the pattern of proteins studied in these experiments. 相似文献
