Food sharing has attracted much attention because of its apparently altruistic nature and its link to prosociality. However, food sharing has been mostly studied in a reproductive context, during courtship and parental care, where the fitness benefits are obvious. We still lack a clear understanding of the functions of food sharing outside any reproductive context and within social groups of same‐aged peers. Previous studies suggest that cofeeding, the action to let another animal feed from the same monopolizable food source, may be used to build and strengthen bonds between individuals. This may be particularly crucial in social birds forming long‐term associations between mates or siblings such as psittacids and corvids. Here, we investigated food sharing and affiliative behaviors such as allopreening in a psittacine species, namely in a group of captive juvenile cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) consisting of five siblings and five unrelated birds. Our main objective was to study the developmental pattern of food sharing over time and its implication in social bonding depending on kinship, affiliation, and sex. Studying cockatiels in this context is providing many new information since most of the studies on food sharing in birds focused on corvids. We found that, contrary to jackdaws, cockatiels continued to share food with multiple individuals, although the frequency of cofeeding as well as the number of cofeeding partners decreased over time. Cockatiels shared more food with their siblings than with other conspecifics but they were not more likely to do cofeeding with birds of the opposite sex. We also found evidence that young cockatiels exchanged more food with those from whom they received food (reciprocity) and, to a lesser extent, allopreening (interchange), than from other cockatiels. Our findings suggest that in cockatiels, food sharing within social groups serves the formation (and maintenance) of affiliative bonds, especially between siblings, rather than pair bonds, but might additionally be explained by reciprocity, interchange, and harassment avoidance.  相似文献

Two azurins (Az624 and Az626) were isolated from the soluble extract of two strains of Pseudomonas chlororaphis, DSM 50083(T) and DSM 50135, respectively, grown under microaerobic conditions with nitrate as final electron acceptor. The azurins, purified to electrophoretic homogeneity in three chromatographic steps, exhibit several peculiar properties. They have high reduction potentials and lower pI than most azurins described in the literature. As previously observed for Pseudomonas aeruginosa azurin, their reduction potentials are pH-dependent, but the pK values of their oxidized forms are lower, which suggests that deeper structural changes are associated with the oxidation process of these novel azurins. A hitherto undescribed pH-dependence of the diffusion coefficient was observed in Az624, that could be caused either by conformational changes, or by the formation of supramolecular aggregates associated with a protonation process. Both azurins exhibit axial X-band electron paramagnetic resonance spectra in frozen solution showing a typical hyperfine with the copper nucleus (I=3/2) and a well-resolved superhyperfine structure with two equivalent 14N nucleus (I=1), which is not usually observed for azurins from other species.  相似文献

Voltage-gated ionic channels are known to be involved in oncogenesis. However, only a few studies describe the functional characteristics of these channels or the mechanisms by which they are involved in the proliferation and invasive processes. Breast cancer cells proliferate and migrate under the constant activation of growth factors, hormones, extracellular matrix interactions, etc. It would thus not be surprising if the activity of the ionic channels was modulated by intracellular regulation pathways such as kinases or phosphatases, which in turn can affect oncogenic properties. In the present study, we investigated some of the electrophysiological properties of the fast inward sodium current found in the breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231 with two configurations of the patch-clamp technique. With perforated patch, a configuration which allows to keep the cytoplam intact, the mean current amplitude was lower, the relative conductance–voltage relationship was shifted to more positive potentials and the recovery from inactivation was accelerated when compared to ruptured patch, where the cytoplasm is dialysed by the intrapipette solution. There was no difference in availability–voltage (pseudo-steady-state inactivation) relationship and in time to peak of the current. These results suggest that regulation mechanisms, possibly involving kinases or phosphatases, are switched off when the cytoplasm is diluted. We propose that such a regulation can modulate the functioning of the channels even in the absence of membrane voltage changes, which in turn can affect oncogenic properties. Following immunization with acetylcholine receptor (AChR), MHC class II-restricted, AChR-specific CD4 cell activation is critical for the development of experimental autoimmune myasthenia gravis (EAMG) in C57BL/6 mice. To study the contributions of B7-1 and B7-2 costimulatory molecules in EAMG, B7-1, B7-2, and B7-1/B7-2 gene knockout (KO) mice were immunized with Torpedo AChR in CFA. Compared with wild-type C57BL6 mice, B7-1 and B7-1/2 KO mice were resistant to EAMG development. B7-1 KO mice had reduced anti-AChR Ab compared with C57BL/6 mice. However, neither B7-1 nor B7-2 gene disruption impaired AChR-induced or dominant alpha(146-162) peptide-induced in vitro lymphoproliferative responses. Blocking of the B7-1 or B7-2 molecule by specific mAbs in vivo led to a reduction in the AChR-specific lymphocyte response, and the reduction was more pronounced in mice treated with anti-B7-2 Ab. The findings implicate B7-1 molecules as having a critical role in the induction of EAMG, and the resistance of B7-1 KO mice is associated with suppressed humoral, rather than suppressed AChR-specific, T cell responses. The data also point to B7-2 molecules as being the dominant costimulatory molecules required for AChR-induced lymphocyte proliferation.  相似文献

This work reports the finding of a unique fast inward sodium current (I(Na)) in MDA-MB-231 cells which is missing in MDA-MB-468 cells and in MCF-7 cells. This current is high-voltage-activated and displays a window current at the membrane potential of MDA-MB-231 cells. This current is blocked by high concentrations of tetrodotoxin (TTX). In MDA-MB-231 cells, which are the most invasive cells among the three cell lines tested, proliferation and migration were not sensitive to TTX while invasion was reduced by approximately 30%. These experiments suggest that I(Na) is involved in the invasion process, probably through its participation to the regulation of the intracellular sodium homeostasis.  相似文献

MIST (mast cell immunoreceptor signal transducer; also termed Clnk) is an adaptor protein structurally related to SLP-76-family hematopoietic cell-specific adaptor proteins. We demonstrate here that two major MIST-associated phosphoproteins expressed in mast cell lines are SLAP-130 and SKAP55, adaptors known to interact with the Src-homology (SH) 2 domain of Src-family protein tyrosine kinases (PTKs). MIST directly associated with SLAP-130 via its SH2 domain, and collaboration of SLAP-130 with SKAP55 was required for the recruitment of MIST to Lyn. Furthermore, MIST was preferentially recruited to Fyn rather than Lyn, which is regulated by higher affinity binding of SLAP-130 and SKAP55 with the Fyn-SH2 domain than the Lyn-SH2 domain. Our results suggest that the MIST–SLAP-130–SKAP55 adaptor complex functions downstream of high-affinity IgE receptor-associated Src-PTKs in mast cells.  相似文献

This article reports the marker-assisted introgression of favorable alleles at three quantitative trait loci (QTL) for earliness and grain yield among maize elite lines. The QTL were originally detected in 1992 by means of ANOVA in a population of 96 recombinant inbred lines (RILs). Introgression started from a selected RIL, which was crossed three times to one of the original parents and then self-fertilized, leading to BC(3)S(1) progenies. Markers were used to assist both foreground and background selection at each generation. At the end of the program, the effect of introgression was assessed phenotypically in agronomic trials, and QTL detection was performed by composite interval mapping among BC(3)S(1) progenies. The marker-assisted introgression proved successful at the genotypic level, as analyzed by precision graphical genotypes, although no emphasis was put on the reduction of linkage drag around QTL. Also, QTL positions were generally sustained in the introgression background. For earliness, the magnitude and sign of the QTL effects were in good agreement with those expected from initial RIL analyses. Conversely, for yield, important discrepancies were observed in the magnitude and sign of the QTL effects observed after introgression, when compared to those expected from initial RIL analyses. The type IV Waardenburg syndrome (WS4), also referred to as Shah-Waardenburg syndrome or Waardenburg-Hirschsprung disease, is characterised by the association of Waardenburg features (WS, depigmentation and deafness) and the absence of enteric ganglia in the distal part of the intestine (Hirschsprung disease). Mutations in the EDN3, EDNRB, and SOX10 genes have been reported in this syndrome. Recently, a new SOX10 mutation was observed in a girl with a neural crest disorder without evidence of depigmentation, but with severe constipation due to a chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction and persistence of enteric ganglia. To refine the nosology of WS, we studied patients with typical WS4 (including Hirschsprung disease) or with WS and intestinal pseudo-obstruction. We found three SOX10 mutations, one EDNRB and one EDN3 mutations in patients presenting with the classical form of WS4, and two SOX10 mutations in patients displaying chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction and WS features. These results show that chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction may be a manifestation associated with WS, and indicate that aganglionosis is not the only mechanism underlying the intestinal dysfunction of patients with SOX10 mutations.  相似文献
