A priority in many crop improvement programs for a long time has been to enhance the tolerance level of plants to both abiotic and biotic stress. Recognition that the root system is the prime determinant of a plant’s ability to extract both water and minerals from the soil implies that its architecture is an important variable underlying a cultivar’s adaptation. The density and/or length of the root hairs (RHs) that are formed are thought to have a major bearing on the plant’s performance under stressful conditions. Any attempt to improve a crop’s root system will require a detailed understanding of the processes of RH differentiation. Recent progress in uncovering the molecular basis of root epidermis specialization has been recorded in the grasses. This review seeks to present the current view of RH differentiation in grass species. It combines what has been learned from molecular-based analyses, histological studies, and observation of the phenotypes of both laboratory- and field-grown plants.  相似文献

The unprecedented rate of change in the Arctic climate is expected to have major impacts on the emergence of infectious diseases and host susceptibility to these diseases. It is predicted that malaria parasites will spread to both higher altitudes and latitudes with global warming. Here we show for the first time that avian Plasmodium transmission occurs in the North American Arctic. Over a latitudinal gradient in Alaska, from 61°N to 67°N, we collected blood samples of resident and migratory bird species. We found both residents and hatch year birds infected with Plasmodium as far north as 64°N, providing clear evidence that malaria transmission occurs in these climates. Based on our empirical data, we make the first projections of the habitat suitability for Plasmodium under a future-warming scenario in Alaska. These findings raise new concerns about the spread of malaria to naïve host populations.  相似文献

Using high definition (HD) and ultra‐high definition (UHD) of Fourier‐transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic imaging, we characterized spectrally pulmonary metastases in a murine model of breast cancer comparing them with histopathological results (Hematoxylin and eosin [H&E] staining). This comparison showed excellent agreement between the methods in case of localization of metastases with size below 1 mm and revealed that label‐free HD and UHD IR spectral histopathology distinguish the type of neoplastic cells. We primary focused on differentiation between metastatic foci in the pleural cavity from cancer cells present in lung parenchyma and inflamed cells present in extracellular matrix of lungs due to growing of advanced metastases. In addition, a combination of unsupervised clustering and IR imaging indicated the high sensitivity of FTIR spectroscopy to identify chemical features of small macrometastases located under the pleural cavity and during epithelial‐mesenchymal transition. FTIR‐based spectral histopathology was proved to detect not only phases of breast cancer metastasis to lungs but also to differentiate various origins of metastases seeded from breast cancer.   相似文献

DNA structure models deduced from X-ray and physicochemical data for Pfl, Xf, and fd viruses have two antiparallel chains wound in helices of approximately 15 A pitch with the phosphates near the structure axes and the bases directed outward. The models, which differ for each virus, are used to interpret ultraviolet absorbance and fluorescence data in terms of DNA protein interactions.  相似文献

A model is presented that treats the symmetry matching problem in structures made of two interacting coaxial helices of point charges. The charges are sources of a potential field that mediates a non-specific attractive interaction between the helices. The problem is represented in Fourier space, which affords the most generality. It is found that coaxial helices with optimally mated symmetries can lock into spatial resonance configurations that maximize their interaction. The resonances are represented as vectors in a discrete three-dimensional space. Two algebraic relations are given for the four symmetry parameters of two helices in resonance. One-start inner helices interacting with coaxial one-start or NR-start outer helices are considered. Applications are made to the filamentous bacteriophages Ff, Pf1, Xf, and Pf3. The interaction given by the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann equation is calculated in this formalism to allow comparison of the electrostatic free energy of interaction of different resonance structures. Experimental nucleotide/subunit ratios are accounted for, and models for the DNA-protein interfaces are presented, with particular emphasis on Pf1.  相似文献

From its origin, the PIR has aspired to support research in computational biology and genomics through the compilation of a comprehensive, quality controlled and well-organized protein sequence information resource. The resource originated with the pioneering work of the late Margaret O. Dayhoff in the early 1960s. Since 1988, the Protein Sequence Database has been maintained collaboratively by PIR-International, an association of macromolecular sequence data collection centers dedicated to fostering international cooperation as an essential element in the development of scientific databases. The work of the resource is widely distributed and is available on the World Wide Web, via FTP, E-mail server, CD-ROM and magnetic media. It is widely redistributed and incorporated into many other protein sequence data compilations including SWISS-PROT and theEntrezsystem of the NCBI.  相似文献

In this study, we demonstrate that malignant mature CD4(+) T lymphocytes derived from cutaneous T cell lymphomas (CTCL) variably display some aspects of the T regulatory phenotype. Whereas seven cell lines representing a spectrum of primary cutaneous T cell lymphoproliferative disorders expressed CD25 and TGF-beta, the expression of FOXP3 and, to a lesser degree, IL-10 was restricted to two CTCL cell lines that are dependent on exogenous IL-2. IL-2, IL-15, and IL-21, all of which signals through receptors containing the common gamma chain, induced expression of IL-10 in the IL-2-dependent cell lines as well as primary leukemic CTCL cells. However, only IL-2 and IL-15, but not IL-21, induced expression of FOXP3. The IL-2-triggered induction of IL-10 and FOXP3 expression occurred by signaling through STAT3 and STAT5, respectively. Immunohistochemical analysis of the CTCL tissues revealed that FOXP3-expressing cells were common among the CD7-negative enlarged atypical and small lymphocytes at the early skin patch and plaque stages. Their frequency was profoundly diminished at the tumor stage and in the CTCL lymph node lesions with or without large cell transformation. These results indicate that the T regulatory cell features are induced in CTCL T cells by common gamma chain signaling cytokines such as IL-2 and do not represent a fully predetermined, constitutive phenotype independent of the local environmental stimuli to which these malignant mature CD4(+) T cells become exposed.  相似文献

Highly selective and potent factor VIIa-tissue factor (fVIIa.TF) complex inhibitors were generated through structure-based design. The pharmacokinetic properties of an optimized analog (9) were characterized in several preclinical species, demonstrating pharmacokinetic characteristics suitable for once-a-day dosing in humans. Analog 9 inhibited platelet and fibrin deposition in a dose-dependent manner after intravenous administration in a baboon thrombosis model, and a pharmacodynamic concentration-response model was developed to describe the platelet deposition data. Results for heparin and enoxaparin (Lovenox) in the baboon model are also presented.  相似文献

Dielectric spectroscopy has been applied to study the decomposition process of unmodified collagen and chondroitin sulfate (CS)- and hyaluronic acid (HA)-modified collagen. Measurements were performed over the frequency range from 10 Hz to 100 kHz and at temperatures from 22 to 260 degrees C. According to the Kramers-Kronig relationship a dispersion is apparent in both epsilon' and epsilon' for the three materials below 140 degrees C and at higher temperatures as a broad peak around 220-230 degrees C, respectively. The values of epsilon' and epsilon' at the same temperature for constant frequency are higher in HA-modified collagen than in the unmodified collagen. However, small differences are shown in these parameters between CS-modified collagen and unmodified collagen. The observed dispersion around 220-230 degrees C corresponds to the decomposition of unmodified and CS- and HA-modified collagen. Power-low responses are observed for the frequency dependence of ac conductivity for unmodified and modified collagen. The behaviour observed for temperature dependencies of the exponent n for the three materials is considered to be related to the proton polarization and conduction processes.  相似文献
