Myocardial hypertrophy, cardiac and urinary catecholamines during severe ethanol intoxication and withdrawal

Cardiomegaly was observed in rats severely intoxicated with ethanol for a 4 day period. It was apparent at 48 hours of treatment, a time at which cardiac protein was elevated and continued into withdrawal. During a 4 day abstinence period the degree of hypertrophy declined towards normal. Cardiac noradrenaline was reduced at the 48 hour time of intoxication, then increased gradually in the further experimental period. As the cardiac hypertrophy occurs at a time that urinary catecholamines are elevated and the adrenal medulla is intensely stimulated, it is proposed that increased levels of circulating catecholamines are largely responsible for the enlargement of the heart.     

A very large repeating unit of mouse DNA containing the 18S, 28S and 5.8S rRNA genes

The organization of the 18S, 28S and 5.8S rRNA genes in the mouse has been elucidated by mapping with restriction endonucleases Eco RI, Hind III and Bam HI. Ribosomal DNA fragments were detected in electrophoretically fractionated digests of total nuclear DNA by in situ hybridization with radioiodinated rRNAs or with complementary RNA synthesized directly on rRNA templates. A map of the rDNA which includes 13 restriction sites was constructed from the sizes of rDNA fragments and their labeling by different probes The map indicates that the rRNA genes lie within remarkably large units of reiterated DNA, at least 44,000 base pairs long. At least two, and possibly four, classes of repeating unit can be distinguished, the heterogeneity probably residing in the very large nontranscribed spacer region. The 5.8S rRNA gene lies in the transcribed region between the 18S and 28S genes.     

DIAGNOSIS OF RHEUMATIC FEVER AND LIKE CONDITIONS—Evaluation of Certain of the Acute Phase Reactants in a Single Specimen of Blood

Certain of the acute phase reactant tests were performed on the same specimen of blood from persons with the following states: Normal, acute respiratory disease, streptococcosis, acute rheumatic fever, acute glomerulonephritis, acute rheumatoid arthritis, inactive rheumatic fever, lupus erythematosus, malignant disease, obesity, asthma, and allergic rhinitis. Of the tests performed, the mucoprotein-tyrosine and the antistreptolysin-0 titer when done together appeared to be the most discriminating. It is suggested that the performance of such tests on the same sample of blood might aid in differentiating mild acute rheumatic fever and acute rheumatoid arthritis from each other and also from other disease states.     

Scale-dependent interactions between intrinsic and extrinsic processes reduce variability in protist populations

Interactions between intrinsic processes and extrinsic fluctuations can positively impact population persistence in ways often not predicted by classic ecological models. These interactions only arise when the intrinsic and extrinsic processes operate on the proper relative scales in time or space. Both metapopulation theory and resonance/attenuation theory suggest that interactions which lower population variability will occur when the intrinsic and extrinsic process occur on similar time scales. I performed an aquatic protist microcosm experiment to investigate how the relative frequencies of extrinsic density perturbations and intrinsic resource pulses impacted population variability. Population variability was lowest in the treatments of intermediate frequency, in which the extrinsic fluctuations and intrinsic processes were on the same time scale. This result is consistent with general theoretical predictions, and empirically documents the importance of considering scale in interactions between intrinsic and extrinsic processes that positively impact population persistence.
