The ability to buffer detrimental effects of environmental stress on fitness is of great ecological importance because, in nature, pronounced environmental variation may regularly induce stress. Furthermore, several stressors may interact in a synergistic manner. In the present study, plastic responses in cold, heat and starvation resistance are investigated in the tropical butterfly Bicyclus anynana Butler, 1879, using a full factorial design with two acclimation temperatures (20 and 27 °C) and four short‐term stress treatments (control, cold, heat, starvation). Warm‐acclimated butterflies are more heat‐ but less cold‐tolerant as expected. Short‐term cold and starvation exposure reduce cold and heat resistance, and short‐term heat exposure decreases cold but increases heat resistance. Starvation resistance is not affected by any of the short‐term treatments. Thus, the effects of short‐term stress exposure are either neutral or negative, except for a positive effect of heat exposure on heat resistance, indicating the negative effects of pre‐exposure to stress. Interestingly, significant interactions between acclimation temperature and short‐term stress exposure for heat and cold resistance are found, demonstrating that larger temperature differences incur more damage. Therefore, animals may not generally be able to benefit from pre‐exposure to stress (through ‘hardening’), depending on their previously experienced conditions. The complex interactions between environmental variation, stress and resistance are highlighted, warranting further investigations.  相似文献

Background, aim and scope

Climate change is a subject of growing global concern. Based on International Energy Agency (IEA 2004) research, about 19% of the greenhouse gas emissions from fuel combustion are generated by the transportation sector, and its share is likely to grow. Significant increases in the vehicles fleets are expected in particular in China, India, the Middle East and Latin America. As a result, reducing vehicle fuel consumption is most essential for the future. The reduction of the vehicle weight, the introduction of improved engine technologies, lower air friction, better lubricants, etc. are established methods of improving fuel efficiency, reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Continued progress will be required along all these fronts with light-weighting being one of the most promising options for the global transport sector. This paper quantifies greenhouse gas savings realised from light-weighting cars with aluminium based on life cycle assessment methodology. The study uses a pragmatic approach to assess mass reduction by comparing specific examples of components meeting identical performance criteria. The four examples presented in this analysis come from practical applications of aluminium. For each case study, the vehicle manufacturer has supplied the respective masses of the aluminium and the alternative component.  相似文献

Monoclonal antibodies have become an increasingly important part of fundamental research and medical applications. To meet the high market demand for monoclonal antibodies in the biopharmaceutical sector, industrial manufacturing needs to be achieved by large scale, highly productive and consistent production processes. These are subject to international guidelines and have to be monitored intensely due to high safety standards for medical applications. Surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy — a fast, real‐time, and label‐free bio‐sensing method — represents an interesting alternative to the quantification of monoclonal antibody concentrations by enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay during monoclonal antibody production. For the application of monitoring bioactive and total monoclonal antibody concentrations in cell culture samples, a surface plasmon resonance assay using a target‐monoclonal antibody model system was developed. In order to ensure the subsequent detection of bioactive monoclonal antibody concentrations, suitable immobilization strategies of the target were identified. A significant decrease of the limit of detection was achieved by using an adapted affinity method compared to the commonly used amine coupling. Furthermore, the system showed limit of detection in the low ng/mL range similar to control quantifications by enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay. Moreover, the comparison of total to bioactive monoclonal antibody concentrations allows analysis of antibody production efficiency. The development of an alternative quantification system to monitor monoclonal antibody production was accomplished using surface plasmon resonance with the advantage of low analyte volume, shorter assay time, and biosensor reusability by target‐layer regeneration. The established method provides the basis for the technical development of a surface plasmon resonance‐based system for continuous process monitoring.  相似文献
