Aim The rise of the Isthmus of Panama and the formation of ‘geminate’ species pairs serves as an important model of allopatric speciation. However, to function as a model system, hypothesized geminates must first be shown to be each other’s closest living relatives. If the presence of cryptic taxa obscures true relationships, the biogeographical histories of transisthmian taxa are likely to be misinterpreted. We have therefore completed a phylogeographic survey of the transisthmian bivalve subgenus Acar in the genus Barbatia to characterize patterns of tropical American diversity and to place transisthmian taxa in a regional phylogeographic context. Location Tropical America. Methods Mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) and nuclear internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences were obtained from 233 specimens of Acar. Sequences were analysed using cladistic and Bayesian methods. Divergence times between species were inferred from net nucleotide divergences and a coalescence‐based method. Results The survey revealed 22 COI clades that were also monophyletic at ITS, indicating that the taxonomy of Acar is potentially greater than a fivefold diversity underestimate. The lone previously recognized geminate [Barbatia (Acar) gradata and Barbatia (Acar) domingensis] is composed of 15 clades. Among the four transisthmian lineages identified, two diverged more than 14 Ma; the two other geminates split just prior to the time of final seaway closure. In addition to a fourfold increase in the number of known geminates, our data show that within‐basin diversification has been more impressive, with one geminate splitting into five monophyletic clades in the Western Atlantic alone since seaway closure. Electron microscopy of the larval shells of specimens indicates that the transisthmian lineage with the greatest rate of post‐Isthmian diversification possesses non‐planktonic larvae, a life‐history feature linked to high speciation rates. Main conclusions Our analyses revealed that the identities of geminate pairs split by the Isthmus of Panama were obscured by extremely high tropical American cryptic diversity. Although we have identified four geminates, only two appear to have been split by the Isthmus. Our uncovering of extensive post‐Isthmian diversification is consistent with the palaeontological perspective that the final closure of the Central American Seaway was followed by high rates of subgeneric diversification, particularly in the tropical Western Atlantic.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate surgical scientific publication in relation to the 1991-1995 war in Croatia, based on the articles indexed in Medline database that were published in 1980-2005 period. The number of articles was extracted from PubMed and analysed with trend analysis, which is preferred analytic approach over calculation of crude publication rates. The results indicate sporadic pre-war output, which was almost completely reduced by the onset of war. During wartime, a significant increasing trend in the number of published surgical articles that were related to warfare was detected (p = 0.003). During the post-war period a gradual shift towards surgical articles that were not related to warfare was detected, also marked by the significant increasing trend (p = 0.027). Both trends were significantly steeper than the overall Croatian biomedical output, suggesting that surgical scientific articles were being published more dynamically than in other biomedical areas in Croatia. The results suggest that war in Croatia has had a strong modifying effect on the surgical scientific output.  相似文献

The reduction of hippocampal volume was frequently reported in schizophrenia, but not in bipolar disorder This volume reduction is associated with clinical features of schizophrenia, in particular with working and verbal memory impairments. Schizoaffective disorder, as a specific disorder sharing clinical features of both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder is rarely analyzed as a separate disorder in neurobiological studies. The aim of this study was to compare hippocampal volumes in separate groups of patients with schizophrenia, schizoaffective and bipolar disorder. Hippocampal volumes were estimated using high resolution magnetic resonance imaging in 60 subjects, 15 subjects in each patient and one healthy volunteer (control) group. There were no significant differences in hippocampal volume between bipolar disorder and control group. Hippocampal volume was statistically significantly reduced in the group of patients with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, compared to either bipolar disorder or control group, thus supporting the hypothesis that hippocampal volume reduction could be considered as a possible neurobiological basis for clinical aspects of schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder associated with working and verbal memory impairment.  相似文献

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) noninvasively provides information on the concentration of some cerebral metabolites in vivo. Among those measurable by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS), N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA) is decreased, and myo-inositol (ml) and choline (Cho) levels are increased in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Donepezil, an acetylcholinesteraze inhibitor, has proven effect on cognitive symptoms in patients with AD. In previous studies, treatment response was associated with an increase of NAA and NAA/Cr in the parietal lobe and hippocampi. Correlation of longitudinal changes of 1H-MRS detectable metabolites in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) with clinically observable changes is a poorly researched topic. The objective of this non-interventional study is to assess whether changes in 1H-MRS measurable metabolites correlate with clinical outcome after donepezil treatment. Twelve patients with mild to moderate AD were evaluated during 26 weeks of donepezil treatment. 1H-MRS parameters in DLPFC were assessed before and after 26 weeks of donepezil treatment. Cognition was assessed with Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale cognitive subscale (ADAS-Cog). A significant increase in NAA/Cr ratio and significantly lower decrease in mI/Cr ratio were found in AD patients with positive treatment response. The results of this study indicate possible modest donepezil effect on prevention of neuronal functional deterioration in DLPFC which correlates with clinical outcome and point the use of 1HMRS as technique of help in assessment of drug effect.  相似文献

This study compared Triclosan coated polyglactin 910 (Vicryl* Plus) with polyglactin 910 (Vicryl*) on abdominal wall healing in colorectal surgery patients. 184 patients with colorectal cancer were included in the study. In 91, the abdominal wall was closed with the Vicryl* Plus, and in 93 patients with Vicryl*. Demographic characteristics, biochemical inflammatory parameters, wound appearance, length of hospital stay, postoperative wound complications and post-incisional hernia were recorded. In the Vicryl* Plus group there was a shorter hospital stay (13.2 +/- 1.3 days; 21.4 +/- 2.8 respectively). In the Vicryl* Plus group inflammatory parameters decreased to normal within the first week whereas in the Vicryl* group remained increased. In the Vicryl* Plus group four patients had a wound discharge, seven had inflammatory reactions to the skin sutures. One dehiscence was noticed. In the Vicryl* group 12 patients had an SSI, 14 patients had inflammatory reactions to the skin sutures and 7 patients had a wound dehiscence. Closure of the abdominal wall using Vicryl* Plus decreases postoperative wound complications, length of hospital stay and is associated with a more rapid return of inflammatory markers to normal.  相似文献

Limited information exists concerning arterial blood pressure (BP) changes in underwater breath-hold diving. Simulated chamber dives to 50 m of freshwater (mfw) reported very high levels of invasive BP in two divers during static apnea (SA), whereas a recent study using a noninvasive subaquatic sphygmomanometer reported unchanged or mildly increased values at 10 m SA dive. In this study we investigated underwater BP changes during not only SA but, for the first time, dynamic apnea (DA) and shortened (SHT) DA in 16 trained breath-hold divers. Measurements included BP (subaquatic sphygmomanometer), ECG, and pulse oxymetry (arterial oxygen saturation, SpO?, and heart rate). BP was measured during dry conditions, at surface fully immersed (SA), and at 2 mfw (DA and SHT DA), whereas ECG and pulse oxymetry were measured continuously. We have found significantly higher mean arterial pressure (MAP) values in SA (~40%) vs. SHT DA (~30%). Postapneic recovery of BP was slightly slower after SHT DA. Significantly higher BP gain (mmHg/duration of apnea in s) was found in SHT DA vs. SA. Furthermore, DA attempts resulted in faster desaturation vs. SA. In conclusion, we have found moderate increases in BP during SA, DA, and SHT DA. These cardiovascular changes during immersed SA and DA are in agreement with those reported for dry SA and DA.  相似文献

Phage shock proteins (Psp) and their homologues are found in species from the three domains of life: Bacteria, Archaea and Eukarya (e.g. higher plants). In enterobacteria, the Psp response helps to maintain the proton motive force (PMF) of the cell when the inner membrane integrity is impaired. The presumed ability of ArcB to sense redox changes in the cellular quinone pool and the strong decrease of psp induction in ΔubiG or ΔarcAB backgrounds suggest a link between the Psp response and the quinone pool. The authors now provide evidence indicating that the physiological signal for inducing psp by secretin-induced stress is neither the quinone redox state nor a drop in PMF. Neither the loss of the H+-gradient nor the dissipation of the electrical potential alone is sufficient to induce the Psp response. A set of electron transport mutants differing in their redox states due to the lack of a NADH dehydrogenase and a quinol oxidase, but retaining a normal PMF displayed low levels of psp induction inversely related to oxidised ubiquinone levels under microaerobic growth and independent of PMF. In contrast, cells displaying higher secretin induced psp expression showed increased levels of ubiquinone. Taken together, this study suggests that not a single but likely multiple signals are needed to be integrated to induce the Psp response.  相似文献

The influence of Pleurotus ostreatus inoculation on wood degradation and on fungal community structure was studied. The experiments were performed on an organically poor fly ash deposit covered with a 10 cm layer of beech wood chips inoculated with P. ostreatus isolate ZIM76. Compared to non-inoculated wood chips, inoculation increased the temperatures and relative humidities and, in the first 6 months, accelerated Klason lignin degradation by 9% and also, after 17 months, increased iron translocation into wood chips by 30%. After 6 months, PCR-DGGE showed 22-28 and 13-21 fungal taxa in non-inoculated and P. ostreatus-inoculated beech chips, respectively. The differences in number of taxa and in the fungal community structure (based on Dice coefficient) between non-inoculated and inoculated wood chips diminished with time. The results indicate that the naturally occurring processes of wood degradation are as efficient as those occurring in sites inoculated with P. ostreatus.  相似文献

We used a continuum model based on the Helfrich free energy to investigate the binding dynamics of a lipid bilayer to a BAR domain surface of a crescent-like shape of positive (e.g. I-BAR shape) or negative (e.g. F-BAR shape) intrinsic curvature. According to structural data, it has been suggested that negatively charged membrane lipids are bound to positively charged amino acids at the binding interface of BAR proteins, contributing a negative binding energy to the system free energy. In addition, the cone-like shape of negatively charged lipids on the inner side of a cell membrane might contribute a positive intrinsic curvature, facilitating the initial bending towards the crescent-like shape of the BAR domain. In the present study, we hypothesize that in the limit of a rigid BAR domain shape, the negative binding energy and the coupling between the intrinsic curvature of negatively charged lipids and the membrane curvature drive the bending of the membrane. To estimate the binding energy, the electric potential at the charged surface of a BAR domain was calculated using the Langevin-Bikerman equation. Results of numerical simulations reveal that the binding energy is important for the initial instability (i.e. bending of a membrane), while the coupling between the intrinsic shapes of lipids and membrane curvature could be crucial for the curvature-dependent aggregation of negatively charged lipids near the surface of the BAR domain. In the discussion, we suggest novel experiments using patch clamp techniques to analyze the binding dynamics of BAR proteins, as well as the possible role of BAR proteins in the fusion pore stability of exovesicles.  相似文献
