Background
In Burundi, malaria is a major public health issue in terms of both morbidity and mortality with around 2.5 million clinical cases and more than 15,000 deaths each year. It is the single main cause of mortality in pregnant women and children below five years of age. Due to the severe health and economic cost of malaria, there is still a growing need for methods that will help to understand the influencing factors. Several studies have been done on the subject yielding different results as which factors are most responsible for the increase in malaria. The purpose of this study has been to undertake a spatial/longitudinal statistical analysis to identify important climatic variables that influence malaria incidences in Burundi. Methods
This paper investigates the effects of climate on malaria in Burundi. For the period 1996-2007, real monthly data on both malaria epidemiology and climate in the area of Burundi are described and analysed. From this analysis, a mathematical model is derived and proposed to assess which variables significantly influence malaria incidences in Burundi. The proposed modelling is based on both generalized linear models (GLM) and generalized additive mixed models (GAMM). The modelling is fully Bayesian and inference is carried out by Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques. Results
The results obtained from the proposed models are discussed and it is found that malaria incidence in a given month in Burundi is strongly positively associated with the minimum temperature of the previous month. In contrast, it is found that rainfall and maximum temperature in a given month have a possible negative effect on malaria incidence of the same month. Conclusions
This study has exploited available real monthly data on malaria and climate over 12 years in Burundi to derive and propose a regression modelling to assess climatic factors that are associated with monthly malaria incidence. The results obtained from the proposed models suggest a strong positive association between malaria incidence in a given month and the minimum temperature (night temperature) of the previous month. An open question is, therefore, how to cope with high temperatures at night. 相似文献83.
Solubilization of organic and inorganic phosphates by three highly efficient soil bacterial isolates

Screening soil samples collected from a diverse range of slightly alkaline soil types, we have isolated 22 competent phosphate
solubilizing bacteria (PSB). Three isolates identified as Pantoea agglomerans strain P5, Microbacterium laevaniformans strain P7 and Pseudomonas putida strain P13 hydrolyzed inorganic and organic phosphate compounds effectively. Bacterial growth rates and phosphate solubilization
activities were measured quantitatively under various environmental conditions. In general, a close association was evident
between phosphate solubilizing ability and growth rate which is an indicator of active metabolism. All three PSB were able
to withstand temperature as high as 42°C, high concentration of NaCl upto 5% and a wide range of initial pH from 5 to 11 while
hydrolyzing phosphate compounds actively. Such criteria make these isolates superior candidates for biofertilizers that are
capable of utilizing both organic and mineral phosphate substrates to release absorbable phosphate ion for plants. 相似文献

Thymoquinone protects against 5-Fluorouracil-induced mucositis by NF-κβ and HIF-1 mechanisms in mice
Fatemeh Madani Sohrab Kazemi Fatemeh Shirafkan Mandana Lotfi Seyed M. Hosseini Ali A. Moghadamnia 《Journal of biochemical and molecular toxicology》2023,37(9):e23405
Mucositis is among the most common side effects of 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) and other cancer therapeutic drugs. Thymoquinone (TQ), a bioactive constituent extracted from Nigella sativa, has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and can modify acute gastrointestinal injury. To investigate the effects of TQ on mucositis induced by 5-FU, studied animals were divided into four groups: control, 5-FU unit dose (300 mg/kg) to cause oral and intestinal mucositis (OM and IM), TQ (2.5 mg/kg) and TQ (2.5 mg/kg) plus 5-FU. Due to The molecular mechanisms, it was confirmed that the expression of NF-κβ and HIF-1 increases in OM. The serum levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), as well as pathological parameters, were assessed. Based on our results, the nuclear factor-kappa β gene expression in the tongue was downregulated significantly in the 5-FU + TQ compared to the 5-FU. TQ treatment can diminish MDA, and a reduction in oxidative stress was shown. TQ could also reduce the severity of tissue destruction and damaging effects induced by 5-FU on the tongue and intestine. We also observed lower villus length and width in the intestine of the 5-FU group compared to the control group. According to our research's pathological, biochemical, and molecular results, treatment with TQ as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compound may be the potential to improve and treat 5-FU-induced OM and IM, and TQ could be used against cancer treatment drugs and exhibit fewer adverse effects. 相似文献

In Bushehr province of Iran, Avicennia marina trees have grown in Bordekhoon (Mond Protected Area) and Assaluyeh (Marine National Park of Nayband). Contrary to Bordekhoon, Assaluyeh is a petrochemical region with environmental pollution. This study was aimed to studying protein profiles, allergenic bands, ontogeny, structure and elemental composition of tectum of A. marina pollens in Assaluyeh and Bordekhoon. Pollens were collected from two regions and extracted in PBS, and protein profiles of pollens were determined by sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). As an experimental model, 20 female 6–8-week-old Balb/C mice were divided into two groups. The mice of first and second groups were sensitized by Bordekhoon and Assaluyeh pollen extracts, respectively, and mice serum samples were used for immunoblotting. Pollen characteristics were studied using light and scanning electron microscopes. SDS-PAGE showed some differences between pollen protein profiles of two regions. Immunoblotting assay detected that pollens have two allergenic bands and the protein band at 100 KD is the common allergenic protein in two regions. Light microscopy revealed that the development of anther wall was basic type and some abnormalities were observed in microspores and pollens of Assaluyeh. Scanning electron microscopy studies showed that the apertures in considerable numbers of Assaluyeh pollens were closed. The comparison of elemental composition of pollen tectum between two regions showed that pollens of Assaluyeh have accumulated Cu on their tectum. Results obtained indicated that environmental pollution can affect protein profile, allergenic bands, structure and elemental composition of tectum of A. marina pollens. 相似文献

A case of periocular dirofilariasis has been diagnosed in Iran. A 27-yr old female referred with a history of edema and redness in the left eye since 2 wk ago. On slit lamp examination, a moving thread-like worm was seen in the subconjunctival area. Two days later, a 126 mm long, live filaria worm was extracted from the lower lid subcutaneous tissue. The worm was diagnosed as, likelihood, Dirofilaria immitis on microscopic examinations. The present case suggests that D. immitis can cause periocular infections. 相似文献
