The aim of the present work is to detect possible differencesin the chromatin of plants replicated in the absence of proteinsynthesis. The kinetics of nuclease digestion in Allium cepa L., evaluatedafter making the cells permeable, was faster for the chromatinof meristem cells replicated in the presence of 1.0 µgml–1 cycloheximide than in control cells. In order to have a synchronous population in the meristems,cells were labelled as binucleate by a short treatment with5.0 mM caffeine. Treated cells failed to increase both theircontent in dense chromatin and intranuclear histones. Thesefacts suggest that chromatin replicated in the presence of cycloheximidedid not incorporate histones and was unable to be integratedinto dense chromatin patches. Recent evidence suggests that blue‐green coloration of bird eggshells may be related to female and/or egg phenotypic quality, and that such colour may affect parental effort and therefore the nutritional environment of developing nestlings. Here we suggest that these relationships and the signal function of eggshell coloration would affect the outcome of coevolution between avian brood parasites and their hosts in at least three different non‐exclusive evolutionary pathways. First, by laying blue‐green coloured eggs, cuckoo females may exploit possible sensory biases of their hosts, constraining the evolution of parasitic egg recognition, and thus avoid rejection. Second, because of the relatively high costs of laying blue eggs, cuckoo females may be limited in their ability to mimic costly blue‐green eggs of their hosts because cuckoo females lay many more eggs than their hosts. Furthermore, costs associated with foreign egg recognition errors would be relatively higher for hosts laying blue eggs. Third, cuckoos may use coloration of host eggs for selecting individuals or specific hosts of appropriate phenotypic quality (i.e. parental abilities). We here explored some predictions emerging from the above scenarios and found partial support for two of them by studying egg coloration of European cuckoos (Cuculus canorus) and that of their 25 main hosts, as well as parasitism and rejection rate of hosts. Cuckoo hosts parasitized with more blue, green, and ultraviolet cuckoo eggs, or those laying more blue‐green eggs, were more prone to accept experimental parasitism with artificial cuckoo eggs. In addition, coloration of cuckoo eggs is more variable when parasitizing hosts laying bluer‐greener eggs, even after controlling for the effect of host egg coloration (i.e. degree of egg matching). Globally, our results are consistent with the proposed hypothesis that host egg traits that are related to phenotypic quality of hosts, such as egg coloration, may have important implications for the coevolutionary interaction between hosts and brood parasites. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 106 , 154–168.  相似文献

Terrestrial gross primary production (GPP) is an important parameter to explore and quantify carbon fixation by plant ecosystems at various scales. Remote sensing (RS) offers a unique possibility to investigate GPP in a spatially explicit fashion; however, budgeting of terrestrial carbon cycles based on this approach still remains uncertain. To improve calculations, spatio-temporal variability of GPP must be investigated in more detail on local and regional scales. The overarching goal of this study is to enhance our knowledge on how environmentally induced changes of photosynthetic light-use efficiency (LUE) are linked with optical RS parameters. Diurnal courses of sun-induced fluorescence yield ( F Syield) and the photochemical reflectance index of corn were derived from high-resolution spectrometric measurements and their potential as proxies for LUE was investigated. GPP was modeled using Monteith's LUE-concept and optical-based GPP and LUE values were compared with synoptically acquired eddy covariance data. It is shown that the diurnal response of complex physiological regulation of photosynthesis can be tracked reliably with the sun-induced fluorescence. Considering structural and physiological effects, this research shows for the first time that including sun-induced fluorescence into modeling approaches improves their results in predicting diurnal courses of GPP. Our results support the hypothesis that air- or spaceborne quantification of sun-induced fluorescence yield may become a powerful tool to better understand spatio-temporal variations of fluorescence yield, photosynthetic efficiency and plant stress on a global scale.  相似文献

鸟类信号系统研究认为,不同于类胡萝卜素,基于黑色素的羽色装饰不需要昂贵的生理代价。然而,羽毛色素细胞的黑色素沉积与抗氧化能力和免疫系统有很强的联系,而抗氧化能力和免疫系统在提高有机体适合度方面具有重要的功能。黑色素细胞的生长对氧化环境压力十分敏感;并且,黑色素本身似乎就具有抗氧化剂的功能。相应地,把抗氧化剂用于以黑色素为基础羽色发育,还是用于其它方面例如免疫调节和免疫刺激等,个体也许必须对此做出权衡。组织中的抗氧化功能大多与代谢活动有关,也就是和自由基的最高水平有关。此外,人们发现,在哺乳动物中调节黑色素沉积的激素,即α黑素细胞刺激素,在鸟类上皮组织的色素沉积中也具有同样的功能。这种进化保守的激素是免疫和炎症反应的一个重要介体。它下调前炎性细胞因子、免疫介导细胞因子和协同刺激分子,以及主要组织相容性复合体Ⅰ类分子在单核细胞的表达以及抗体的产生,而上调抑制因子白介素。黑色素在羽毛上的大量沉积,也可能反映出免疫系统在局部免疫应答的负调控能力。这些将黑色素沉积和抗氧化剂以及免疫功能联系起来的机制,表明基于黑色素的羽色信号具有一定的生理代价,这些对以往关于黑色素的优势作用的假说提出质疑  相似文献

Abstract Avian blue‐green eggshell coloration has been proposed as a female signal of genetic or phenotypic quality to males. However, little is known about the relative importance of additive genetic and environmental effects as sources of eggshell colour variation in natural populations. Using 5 years of data and animal models, we explored these effects in a free‐living population of pied flycatchers. Permanent environmental and year effects were negligible, although year environmental variance (VYear) was significant for all but one of the traits. However, we found high–moderate narrow‐sense heritabilities for some colour parameters. Within‐clutch colour variability showed the highest coefficient of additive genetic variation (i.e. evolvability). Previous evidence suggests that eggshell colour is sexually selected in this species, males enhancing parental effort in clutches with higher colour variability and peak values. Eggshell colour could be driven by good‐genes selection in pied flycatchers although further genetic studies should confirm this possibility.  相似文献

Several mechanisms can explain individual differences in foraging behaviour, such as variation in predation risk between patches, variation in the ability of individuals to detect or escape from predators, variation between individuals in their requirement for food, the quality and abundance of food in different patches, phenotypic variation giving rise to differences in resource use (exploitation hypothesis) and interference competition such as the exclusion of subordinate individuals by dominants. Subordinates can develop compensation mechanisms. One of these mechanisms is morphological differentiation. However not every change in morphology can account for the same variation in behaviour, since some morphologies can be ecologically more plastic than others (i.e. some morphs can exploit a broader niche than other morphs). Under controlled conditions in the Coal Tit Parus ater, we tested whether (1) differences in resource use were explained by either the exploitation hypothesis or by the interference hypothesis, and (2) the presumed costs of subordination can be reduced through different ecological plasticities associated with different morphologies. Our results support the interference hypothesis as there are no differences in hanging behaviour between dominants and subordinates when foraging solitarily; while in the presence of other individuals, we observed differences in foraging behaviour that varied with social status. Our results also show that body mass influenced foraging behaviour; lighter birds can exploit patches where hanging postures are needed more easily than heavier birds. Moreover, this relationship varied among individuals, as predicted by the ecological plasticity hypothesis. Lighter subordinate individuals used hanging postures more frequently than heavier ones, differentially reducing the costs of subordination. We propose that differences in the breadth of ecological niche due to differences in morphology can reduce the costs of subordination.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. [35S]methionine incorporation into proteins of either T. cruzi epimastigotes or trypomastigotes was drastically inhibited by low concentrations of crystal violet in a dose-dependent manner. This inhibition was not due to ATP depletion since cellular ATP levels did not change significantly after incubation of epimastigotes with 50 μM crystal violet for similar periods of time, and was unaffected by changes in the extracellular free calcium concentration. Although crystal violet was able to inhibit protein synthesis in a cell-free system from T. cruzi epimastigotes, half maximal inhibition was at 1 mM, a concentration three orders of magnitude higher than those that inhibited protein synthesis in intact cells. On the other hand, crystal violet was able to inhibit total [35S]methionine uptake at similar concentrations to those that inhibited protein synthesis while addition of increasing concentrations of cold methionine to the incubation medium protected the cells against crystal violet inhibition. Crystal violet also inhibited total [3H]proline uptake thus indicating that it has a general inhibitory effect upon the transport of amino acids, and not specifically upon methionine. These results indicate that inhibition of protein synthesis by crystal violet is probably due to inhibition of amino acid uptake.  相似文献

The hindlimb (myology and osteology) of swallows (Hirundinidae) is studied and compared with that of seven other passerine families to identify ecomorphological patterns. Muscular and osteological differences are found among swallow species and associations between morphology and foraging technique are examined. We explain morphological differences found in hirundinids as adaptations favouring flexion and adduction of the legs in these aerial foragers, which devote very little time to cursorial locomotion. This adaptive hypothesis is tested using a phylogenetic approach on the basis of an available molecular phylogenetic hypothesis. A clear ecomorphological pattern emerges relating foraging behaviour and pelvic morphology in hirundinids: aerial feeding technique is correlated with short distal leg segments, a large pelvis, a medial insertion of M. iliotibialis cranialis, an absence of pars accessoria of M. flexor cruris lateralis and a fused M. pubo-ischiofemoralis.  相似文献

The Chilotan Archipelago and surrounding areas of north‐western Patagonia (41°–43°S, 72°–74°W) offer a unique opportunity to study the interplay between the recent genetic and paleoenvironmental evolution on temperate rainforest environments. Previous studies in this region have postulated that land biota persisted west of the Patagonian ice sheet, in ice‐free low‐elevation regions of the mainland, and the north‐western portion of Isla Grande de Chiloé during Quaternary ice ages. In this study, we analysed the phylogeographical structure (Cytochrome b) of the iguanid lizard Liolaemus pictus to estimate their genetic structure in response to glacial–interglacial cycles and colonization routes. We found that populations from the mainland and Isla Grande de Chiloé do not share haplotypes and, thus, are divergent haplogroups. This divergence might reflect an ancient isolation, much older than the last glaciation. Moreover, the existence of four divergent haplogroups among L. pictus populations in the mainland suggests the persistence of multiple isolated populations during the last glaciation. Our results also indicate that the colonization of small islands occurred from several source sites, located both in the mainland and in Isla Grande de Chiloé, after the Last Glacial Maximum.  相似文献
