Flooding the soil for 5–7 d caused partial desiccationin leaves of pea plants (Pisum sativum. L. cv. ‘Sprite’).The injury was associated with anaerobiosis in the soil, a largeincrease in the permeability of leaf tissue to electrolytesand other substances, a low leaf water content and an increasedwater saturation deficit (WSD). Desiccating leaves also lackedthe capacity to rehydrate in humid atmospheres, a disabilityexpressed as a water resaturation deficit (WRSD). This irreversibleinjury was preceded during the first 4–5 d of floodingby closure of stomata within 24 h, decreased transpiration,an unusually large leaf water content and small WSD. Leaf waterpotentials were higher than those in well-drained controls.Also, there was no appreciable WRSD. Leaflets detached fromflooded plants during this early phase retained their watermore effectively than those from controls when left exposedto the atmosphere for 5 min. Stomatal closure and the associated increase in leaf hydrationcould be simulated by excising leaves and incubating them withtheir petioles in open vials of water. Thus, such changes inflooded plants possibly represented a response to a deficiencyin the supply of substances that would usually be transportedfrom roots to leaves in healthy plants (negative message). Ionleakage and the associated loss of leaf hydration that occurswhen flooding is extended for more than 5 d could not be simulatedby isolating the leaves from the roots. Appearance of this symptomdepended on leaves remaining attached to flooded root systems,implying that the damage is caused by injurious substances passingupwards (positive message). Both ethylene and ethanol have beeneliminated as likely causes, but flooding increased phosphorusin the leaves to concentrations that may be toxic. CYTOCHROME b5 is a haem-containing protein in the microsomes of liver tissue. It interacts specifically with a flavo-protein, cytochrome b5 reductase, which catalyses the transfer of electrons from NADH to the haem iron of the cytochrome1. The microsomal cytochrome b5 system has been implicated in fatty acid desaturation reactions2 and a similar system in erythrocytes may catalyse the reduction of methaemoglobin3. Calf liver cytochrome b5, solubilized by pancreatic lipase, has a molecular weight of 11,000 and consists of ninety-three amino-acids in the sequence shown in Fig. 1 (refs. 4 and 5). Effect of Interferon on Some Aspects of Transformation by Polyoma Virus   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
WHEN BHK 21 hamster cells are infected with polyoma virus1, there is no vegetative growth of virus, but stably transformed cells appear. These transformed cells are more easily transplanted than BHK 21 cells; they initiate their growth cycle in otherwise restrictive cultural conditions such as the absence of serum, high density and suspension; they grow with random orientation and have exposed on their surfaces receptor sites for certain glycoprotein agglutinins2–5. The proportion of stably transformed cells is low, even after high doses of virus. But a much higher proportion (sometimes all cells) shows abortive transformation—changes characteristic of transformation, but which last only a few days. In suspension cultures, for example, most of the infected cells grow into small colonies of four to thirty-two cells6. In surface cultures deprived of serum DNA synthesis is initiated and the cells may then divide at least once7: they also temporarily lose the normal parallel orientation and develop the typical random appearance of transformed cells. Moreover, the polyoma nuclear T-antigen and also a surface antigen detected by immunofluorescence, appear temporarily in most polyoma infected BHK 21 cells8, while 3T3 cells exposed to SV40 virus show transient exposure of cell surface sites reacting with conconavalin A (ref. 9).  相似文献

By light microscopic investigation of skin and wool specimens of newborn lambs, we discovered a previously unknown mechanism for melanosomes transport in the process of dermal papilla melanocytes regular mitosis and migration into the hair shaft. This mechanism plays a great role in hair pigmentation especially in dominant (ED/ED) and recessive (Aa/Aa) black lambs of all investigated breeds. The rate of pigment cell mitosis, proliferation, and migration differs greatly in lambs of investigated color genotypes. In black genotypes the rate of melanocyte mitosis is very high and is approximately the same as in the hair bulb matrix cells, whereas in brown and red genotypes this rate is much lower. Melanocyte mitosis in the light red and tan groups was not found.  相似文献

Diurnal and seasonal haul-out patterns, site fidelity and activity budgets of individually identified Hooker's sea lions were studied for two years at Papanui Beach, Otago Peninsula, New Zealand.
Fourteen male sea lions were identified. Lengths ranged from 1.65 m–2.28 m and estimated ages from 2-11 yr. The population consisted of four sexually and socially mature (potentially breeding), eight sexually mature but socially immature and two immature males. Most haul-outs (95.6%) were by nine identifiable individuals (Residents) returning on a regular basis, suggesting a high degree of site specificity. Emigration and recruitment were low in relation to the length of the study. Daily arrivals (mean = 0844 h, SD = 1.49) and departures (mean = 1802 h, SD = 1.18) indicate nocturnal feeding. During March 1986 sea lions spent 43.8% of each day ashore (= 78% of daylight hours). Numbers of sea lions hauled out declined in both breeding seasons; in 1986/87 this was due to a decrease in haul-out frequency of resident animals. All but one of these sea lions returned after the breeding season.
Sea lions preferentially selected the middle and the extreme ends of the beach as haul-out sites. During winter use was made of the grass dunes as haul-out areas.
There were significant differences in the frequencies of behavioral activities between summer and winter; more time was allocated to resting in summer.  相似文献

The Midas cichlid ( Cichlasoma citrinellum ) of Nicaragua shows stable polychromatism in that a consistent, small proportion of the fish in nature lose their melanophores and thereby become gold-coloured. Before metamorphosis, all fish look alike. We asked whether the pre-transformed offspring of gold and normal morphs might differ in their morphological and physiological responses to white and to black backgrounds despite looking the same. More chromatophores developed in all juveniles exposed for two weeks to a black than to a white background. When moved from one background to the other, the fish adjusted to white faster than to black. Most importantly, genetically normal fish (N) colour-matched quicker than genetically gold fish (G) irrespective of the direction of change. Adjustment in G was also more variable, indicating poorer control. A parallel pattern was recorded photometrically in melanophores of excised scales: aggregation of pigment was faster than dispersion. And pigment in the melanophores of N aggregated and dispersed swifter than did those of G. Therefore, pre-metamorphosed juvenile G could be more vulnerable to predation than are juvenile N. This reveals a possible source of selection against the offspring of gold morphs before they become gold-coloured.  相似文献

Most male frogs in the genus Physalaemus produce a whine-like advertisement call. Male P. pustulosus , however, add chucks to the call. This enhances the attractiveness of the call to females, and has evolved under the influence of sexual selection despite the increased predation risk from the frog-eating bat ( Trachops cirrhosus ). This complex call is unusual, if not unique, among anurans because the two call components overlap in time. Here we investigate the morphological changes responsible for the production of complex calls.
The Physalaemus purtulosus species group consists of four species. Physalaemus pustulosus and P. petersi are sister species, and recently it has been shown that P. petersi produces chucks. Physalaemus coloradorum and P. purtulatus are sister species and neither is known to produce chucks. Two laryngeal characters vary within the species group. Physalaemus pustulosus has a large fibrous mass (FMI), whose vibration is responsible for production of the chuck. This mass is much smaller in the other three species. In P. pustulosus and P. petersi the FMI is anchored dorsally, deep within the bronchial process, the attachment is more extensive in P. pustulosus. Neither P. pustulatus nor P. coloradorum have such a dorsal attachment associated with their FMI. This character is responsible for allowing the FMI to vibrate independently of the vocal cords, that is, for the production of the complex call. Thus the morphological changes responsible for the evolution of this unusual behavioural innovation, the complex call, are gradual, and almost trival, in nature. This study also shows that the primitive condition of the larynx of the P. pustulosus and P. petersi ancestor, was predisposed to the production of complex calls.
We also document ontogenetic and sexually dimorphic patterns in larynx structure.  相似文献
