We explored how morphological traits can complement phylogenetic information to extend our predictions of the ecology of a diverse beetle assemblage. We analysed ten morphological traits from an assemblage of 239 species from 35 families, and identified three axes of morphological variation that were independent of body length: (1) relative robustness; (2) relative appendage length; and (3) relative abdomen length. The trait associations defining these axes of morphological variation did not change after adjusting for family‐level phylogeny. We detected significant differences in morphological variation across the beetle assemblage according to diet and microhabitat use, and these patterns were only partially influenced by family membership. Further analysis within dominant families showed that species of Carabidae, Curculionidae, Scarabaeidae and Staphylinidae had greater body length in open versus tree litter microhabitat, and species of Carabidae and Curculionidae had greater relative robustness, but shorter relative appendage length, in open versus tree litter microhabitat. Although it is clear that family‐level phylogeny and morphology share some explanatory power for predicting the diet and microhabitat use by beetles, we demonstrate that body length, robustness and appendage length are correlated significantly with microhabitat use when comparing members of the same family. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 102 , 301–310.  相似文献

Species relocation programmes are increasingly performed with the intention of establishing a self‐sustaining population of threatened or declining native species. However, the use of experimental quantitative approaches in species relocation programmes is still relatively uncommon, despite a number of international studies recommending clear guidelines and standards. This paper evaluates species relocation programmes conducted within Australia to assess how programmes performed in relation to such standards. The search techniques identified 54 species relocation programmes, the majority of which were reintroductions (52%) and supplementations (30%). Only 25 (46%) of the species relocation programmes claimed success, with a lack of effective predator control recognized as contributing to the failure of 14 programmes. There was considerable variation in the quality of species relocation programmes in relation to key features such as whether the programme integrated experimental approaches with testable hypotheses, whether there were explicit statements of criteria for success, whether suitable habitat was identified for the release site and whether long‐term monitoring was conducted. We propose guidelines to improve scientific rigour and success rates of species relocation programmes.  相似文献

Seeds of Sesbania punicea (Cav.) Benth. are largely impermeable,and the natural, low, percentage which germinate are permeableat the lens. Scarifying seed in acid stimulates germinationand causes various types of damage to the testa, including thelens. Placing seeds in boiling water stimulates germinationby rendering the seeds permeable at the lens. Seeds were mechanicallyscarified at precise sites on the testa to assess influenceof the site and degree of damage on germination. Results indicatethat both the site of initial water entry and the rate of waterentry are important in determining seed and seedling vigour.Damaging the lens is more effective in stimulating germinationand reducing seedling abnormalities than complete excision ofthe lens. This effect can be reversed if seeds from which thelens was excised are allowed to imbibe gradually in inert osmotica.The leguminous lens thus acts as the site of initial water entryand regulates the rate of water uptake, thereby increasing seedand seedling vigour. Gammarus minus is an important component of surface spring and cave ecosystems throughout Appalachia, and is a useful indicator of the hydrology and gene flow in freshwater communities. Gammarus minus populations occupying large cave passages (> 2 km) are usually troglomorphic, having reduced eyes, fewer ommatidia, larger body size, longer antennae, and reduced pigmentation relative to surface populations. We surveyed five cave stream and 10 surface spring populations for DNA sequence variation in the cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) and internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS-1) genes with an aim towards characterizing phylogeographical structure and comparing the nature of genetic variation in cave vs. surface populations. Although standing variation at both loci was rather low within populations, a significant degree of divergence and spatial structuring of populations was observed. Levels of genetic variation within cave and spring populations differed substantially, with caves harbouring significantly less variation at the COI locus than surface springs. Codon usage bias was significantly lower in caves, indicating that cave streams harbour smaller and/or more recently colonized populations. Overall these data indicate limited gene flow among populations and suggest that the cave populations sampled in this study are prone to bottlenecks, possibly due to larger temperature fluctuations and more frequent incidence of drought conditions associated with these particular cave habitats.  相似文献

The use of the anti-ozonant ethylenediurea (EDU) to assess croplosses due to atmospheric ozone (O3), is controversial becauseof incomplete knowledge on the optimal dosage, the extent ofprotection provided and potential effects on plant performanceof EDU per se. In a greenhouse experiment, radish (Raphanussativus L.) cv. ‘Cherry Belle’ plants were treatedwith EDU as a soil drench (150 mg11, 60 ml plant1) at threestages of development: early, maximum and late hypocotyl thickening.Two days later the plants were exposed to O3, mimicking an ambientpattern (70 nl 11 O3, 7 h d1, 5 d, and up to 120 nl 11 O3 on2 d), or remained in filtered air. Assessment of leaf injury showed complete protection from ozone-inducedleaf damage at all stages of growth due to EDU. EDU did causeslight leaf margin necrosis and hyponastic leaf deformationirrespective of the atmospheric treatment, but biomass and relativegrowth rate (RGR) of the shoot and leaf number duration werenot altered and leaf area duration was increased when comparedto control plants. EDU did not affect dry weight accumulationnor RGR of the hypocotyl. Ozone-induced reductions in growthof below-ground organs (hypocotyl and root), which were mostprominent in the intermediate and early stage of growth, werelargely suppressed by the EDU-treatment. Decreases of hypocotylbiomass due to O3 were transient and significant increases inRGR of the hypocotyl during the post-exposure period indicateda substantial capability of compensation during the period ofrecovery. MANNINGJ. C. & GOLDBLATT, P., 1991. Systematic and phylogenetic significance of the seed coat in the shrubby African Iridaceae, Nivenia, Klattia and Witsenia. The seeds of Nivenia, Klattia and Witsenia, a natural alliance within Nivenioideae, are among their most distinctive features, and seed number and shape constitute at least two synapomorphies for this monophyletic lineage. In this paper we survey the structure of the seed surface of five species of Nivenia and one each of Klattia and Witsenia by scanning electron microsopy (SEM), and study the development of the seed coat in a representative species of each of the three genera. Outgroups for comparison were selected from genera inside and outside the subfamily. The six genera of Nivenioideae are united in having a 3 (– 2) seriate outer integument but the shrubby genera are unique in the family in their tangentially flattened ovules which mature into depressed, flat, scutiform seeds. They display a range of variation in seed coat characters but are specialized in the subfamily and family in having a transparent outer integument. Other genera have pigmented deposits in the outer epidermis of the outer integument. Nivenia and Witsenia are further specialized in having a partially exfoliating outer integument. Klattia is unique among the shrubby genera in having deposits in the second layer of the tegmen, in retaining an intact outer epidermis of the tegmen, and in the fusiform shape of the epidermal cells and striate surface of the seed. Our results are incorporated in a cladogram that expresses our current understanding of the phylogenetic relationships of Nivenioideae.  相似文献

There is a growing awareness of the role of vegetation as a source of reactive hydrocarbons that may serve as photochemical oxidant precursors. A study was designed to assess independently the influence of variable light and temperature on isoprene emissions from live oak (Quercus virginiana Mill.). Plants were conditioned in a growth chamber and then transferred to an environmentally controlled gas-exchange chamber. Samples of the chamber atmosphere were collected; isoprene was concentrated cryogenically and measured by gas chromatography. A logistic function was used to model isoprene emission rates. Under regimes of low temperature (20°C) or darkness, isoprene emissions were lowest. With increasing temperature or light intensity, the rate of isoprene emission increased, reaching maxima at 800 μE m-2 s-1 and 40–44°C, respectively. Higher temperatures caused a large decrease in emissions. Since the emissions of isoprene were light-saturated at moderate intensities, temperature appeared to be the main factor controlling emissions during most of the day. Carbon lost through isoprene emissions accounted for 0.1 to 2% of the carbon fixed during photosynthesis depending on light intensity and temperature.  相似文献
