The paper gives the chromosome numbers for 38 species of the Mongolian Flora. Some of the counts appear to be the first findings for the species. The classification methodology based on morphometric data and supervised artificial neural networks (ANN) was tested on five fly species of the parasitoid genera Tachina and Ectophasia (Diptera, Tachinidae). Objects were initially photographed, then digitalized; consequently the picture was scaled and measured by means of an image analyser. The 16 variables used for classification included length of different wing veins or their parts and width of antennal segments. The sex was found to have some influence on the data and was included in the study as another input variable. Better and reliable classification was obtained when data from both the right and left wings were entered, the data from one wing were however found to be sufficient. The prediction success (correct identification of unknown test samples) varied from 88 to 100% throughout the study depending especially on the number of specimens in the training set. Classification of the studied Diptera species using ANN is possible assuming a sufficiently high number (tens) of specimens of each species is available for the ANN training. The methodology proposed is quite general and can be applied for all biological objects where it is possible to define adequate diagnostic characters and create the appropriate database.  相似文献

Autumnal sedimentation of the Microcystis population was studiedin Lake Nieuwe Meer (Amsterdam, The Netherlands). In summer,Microcystis formed a high percentage of the total phytoplanktonin the water column, but a low percentage in sedimentation traps.The reverse was found during September and October, with a highpercentage in the sedimentation traps, but a low percentagein the water column. The decrease in the numbers of Microcystiscolonies coincided with a decrease in waler temperature. Inexperiment with a strain of Mirocystis, isolated from Lake NieuweMeer, the percentage of total colonies that were sinking increasedin a few days to 100% after a shift from 20C to 15.3, 13.0or 10.5C. The gas vesicle volume in the cells remained constantduring the incubations. Sinking of the colonies resulted froman increased glycogen content. Calculation of carbon (C) flowsduring the first 2 days of the incubation at reduced temperatureshowed that the glycogen accumulation was the result of a muchlower rate of protein synthesis during the light period at thelower temperatures. Although the photosynthetic rate itselfdecreased at reduced temperature, it resulted in more fixedCO2 being stored as glucose. Because the respiratory rate alsodecreased (with an almost similar decrease to that of photosynthesis),glycogen accumulated at lower temperatures. It was calculatedthat after an incubation period of-I week at reduced temperature,the rate of photosynthesis had decreased by 10.1% of the valueat 20C per 1C, while the rate of respiration had decreasedonly 1.8%. It is proposed that there is a feedback mechanismin which an increasing concentration of glycogen inhibits photosynthesisand stimulates respiration.  相似文献

The giant kelp Macrocystis (integrifolia) has been intensely harvested in northern Chile for several years. In order to prevent a future disaster, we developed two different techniques for restoration of damaged Macrocystis integrifolia beds in the Atacama region of Chile. (1) Explantation: Laboratory-grown juvenile sporophytes were fixed to different substrata (plastic grids, ceramic plates, or boulders) by elastic bands or fast-drying glue (cyanoacrylate). Explants reached 150–200 cm in length within 5 months (relative growth rate?≈?1.3–1.7 % day?1), and reproductive maturity in 5–7 months. (2) Seeding of spores: Mature sporophylls were placed at 8 m depth on the sea bottom, supported by cotton gauze sleeves attached to boulders of different origin. Sixty percent of clean boulders collected on the beach produced up to seven recruits per boulder. In contrast, 20 % of the boulders from the sea bottom, colonized by epibionts, showed up to two recruits. Relative growth rates, however, were similar (≈2.4–2.6 % day?1). Practical applications of our findings are: laboratory-produced juvenile sporophytes fixed to various substrata by elastic bands or cyanoacrylate glue can be used to colonize rocks or artificial reefs. In cases, where laboratory-grown seedlings are unavailable, mature sporophylls from nearby Macrocystis beds can be used to establish new recruits on rocky substrata.  相似文献

The porcine corticotropin-releasing hormone(CRH) gene is a functional-positional candidate for quantitative tract loci on porcine chromosome 4 with major effects on growth and carcass composition. In addition, the central role of CRH in the neuroendocrine response to stress implicates the CRH gene as a functional candidate for meat quality. Association of a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the promoter region of the porcine CRH gene (g.233C > T) with several growth, carcass and meat quality traits was examined using more than 2000 individuals from four commercial lines: German Landrace (LR), Pietrain (Pi), German Large White x German Landrace (F1) and the German commercial fattening pig cross of Pietrain x F1 (PiF1). Significant association of the CRH SNP was found with feed conversion ratio in the PiF1 line, with carcass length in the LR line and with lean content in the F1, LR and Pi lines. Moreover, significant association with meat colour was found in the Pi and LR lines; however, the effects were in opposite directions. The presented results indicate that sequence variation in the porcine CRH gene has no major effect on growth and carcass composition in commercial pig lines, although it may significantly contribute to variation in meat quality. The g.233C>T SNP may be in incomplete linkage disequilibrium with causal mutations and/or exhibit effects in the context of DNA variation at other interacting loci.  相似文献

1. Secretory pathway Ca(2+) ATPase type 1 (SPCA1) is a newly recognized Ca(2+)/Mn(2+)-transporting pump localized in membranes of the Golgi apparatus. 2. The expression level of SPCA1 in brain tissue is relatively high in comparison with other tissues. 3. With the aim to determine the expression of SPCA1 within the different types of neural cells, we investigated the distribution of SPCA1 in neuronal, astroglial, oligodendroglial, ependymal, and microglial cell cultures derived from rat brains. 4. Western Blot analysis with rabbit anti-SPCA1 antibodies revealed the presence of SPCA1 in homogenates derived from neuronal, astroglial, ependymal, and oligodendroglial, but not from microglial cells. 5. Cell cultures that gave rise to positive signal in the immunoblot analysis were also examined immunocytochemically. 6. Immunocytochemical double-labeling experiments with anti-SPCA1 serum in combination with antibodies against cell-type specific proteins showed a localization of the SPCA1signal within cells stained positively also for GFAP, alpha-tubulin or MBP. 7. These results definitely established the expression of SPCA1 in astroglial, ependymal, and oligodendroglial cells. 8. In addition, the evaluation of neuronal cultures for the presence of SPCA1 revealed an SPCA1-specific immunofluorescence signal in cells identified as neurons.  相似文献
