Two‐wing flyingfish (Exocoetus spp.) are widely distributed, epipelagic, mid‐trophic organisms that feed on zooplankton and are preyed upon by numerous predators (e.g., tunas, dolphinfish, tropical seabirds), yet an understanding of their speciation and systematics is lacking. As a model of epipelagic fish speciation and to investigate mechanisms that increase biodiversity, we studied the phylogeny and biogeography of Exocoetus, a highly abundant holoepipelagic fish taxon of the tropical open ocean. Morphological and molecular data were used to evaluate the phylogenetic relationships, species boundaries, and biogeographic patterns of the five putative Exocoetus species. We show that the most widespread species (E. volitans) is sister to all other species, and we find no evidence for cryptic species in this taxon. Sister relationship between E. monocirrhus (Indo‐Pacific) and E. obtusirostris (Atlantic) indicates the Isthmus of Panama and/or Benguela Barrier may have played a role in their divergence via allopatric speciation. The sister species E. peruvianus and E. gibbosus are found in different regions of the Pacific Ocean; however, our molecular results do not show a clear distinction between these species, indicating recent divergence or ongoing gene flow. Overall, our phylogeny reveals that the most spatially restricted species are more recently derived, suggesting that allopatric barriers may drive speciation, but subsequent dispersal and range expansion may affect the distributions of species. 相似文献

Reinterpreting recapitulation: systematics of needlefishes and their allies (Teleostei: Beloniformes) 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

Abstract. As needlefishes (Belonidae) grow, their jaws pass through a "halfbeak" stage that resembles the adult jaw condition of the closely related family of halfbeaks (Hemiramphidae). Based on this pattern, some authors have suggested that halfbeaks are "developmentally arrested" or paedomorphic needlefish derivatives, whereas others have supported the notion that needlefishes are descended from halfbeak-like ancestors and that needlefish ontogeny thereby recapitulates phylogeny. To test these ideas and to better understand evolutionary changes in jaw ontogeny, phylogenetic relationships among genera of needlefishes, sauries (Scomberesocidae), halfbeaks, and flyingfishes (Exocoetidae) were assessed using mitochondrial (cytochrome b and 16S), nuclear (Tmo-4C4), and morphological characters. The resultant tree provides several novel taxonomic findings: (1) flyingfishes appear to be nested within halfbeaks; (2) sauries appear to be nested within needlefishes; and (3) the Indo-West Pacific freshwater halfbeaks appear to be most closely related to the needlefish/saury clade. The structure of the tree falsifies the idea that halfbeaks are paedomorphic needlefishes. Instead, halfbeaks are basal relative to needlefishes, fitting the pattern predicted by the hypothesis of recapitulation. I discuss limitations to phylogenetic perspectives on recapitulation based on discrete character data by comparing aspects of von Baerian and Haeckelian views of the relation between ontogeny and phylogeny. 相似文献

Sim2 contributes to neuroendocrine hormone gene expression in the anterior hypothalamus 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Paraventricular (PVN) and supraoptic nuclei of the hypothalamus maintain homeostasis by modulating pituitary hormonal output. PVN and supraoptic nuclei contain five major cell types: oxytocin-, vasopressin-, CRH-, somatostatin-, and TRH-secreting neurons. Sim1, Arnt2, and Otp genes are essential for terminal differentiation of these neurons. One of their common downstream genes, Brn2, is necessary for oxytocin, vasopressin, and CRH cell differentiation. Here we show that Sim2, a paralog of Sim1, contributes to the expression of Trh and Ss genes in the dorsal preoptic area, anterior-periventricular nucleus, and PVN. Sim2 expression overlaps with Trh- and Ss-expressing cells, and Sim2 mutants contain reduced numbers of Trh and Ss cells. Genetically, Sim1 acts upstream of Sim2 and partially compensates for the loss of Sim2. Comparative expression studies at the anterior hypothalamus at early stages reveal that there are separate pools of Trh cells with distinctive molecular codes defined by Sim1 and Sim2 expression. Together with previous reports, our results demonstrate that Sim1 and Otp utilize two common downstream genes, Brn2 and Sim2, to mediate distinctive sets of neuroendocrine hormone gene expression. 相似文献

Explanations of the patterns of vertebrate fin and limb evolution are improving as specific hypotheses based on molecular and developmental data are proposed and tested. Comparative analyses of gene expression patterns and functions in developing limbs, and morphological patterns in embryonic, adult and fossil limbs point to digit specification as a key developmental innovation associated with the origin of tetrapods. Digit development during the fin-to-limb transition involved sustained proximodistal outgrowth and a new phase of Hox gene expression in the distal fin bud. These patterning changes in the distal limb have been explained by the linked concepts of the metapterygial axis and the digital arch. These have been proposed to account for the generation of limb pattern by sequential branching and segmentation of precartilagenous elements along the proximodistal axis of the limb. While these ideas have been very fruitful, they have become increasingly difficult to reconcile with experimental and comparative studies of fin and limb development. Here we argue that limb development does not involve a branching mechanism, and reassess the concept of a metapterygial axis in limb development and evolution. 相似文献

Obesity in humans has been associated with altered autonomic nervous system activity. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between autonomic function and body fat distribution in 16 obese, postmenopausal women using power spectrum analysis of heart rate variability. Using this technique, a low frequency peak (0.04-0.12 Hz) reflecting mixed sympathetic and parasympathetic activity, and a high frequency peak (0.22-0.28 Hz) reflecting parasympathetic activity, were identified from 5-minute consecutive heart rate data (both supine and standing). Autonomic activity in upper body (UBO) vs. lower body obesity (LBO)(by waist-to-hip ratio) and subcutaneous vs. visceral obesity (by CT scan) was evaluated. Power spectrum data were log transformed to normalize the data. The results showed that standing, low-frequency power (reflecting sympathetic activity) and supine, high-frequency power (reflecting parasympathetic activity) were significantly greater in UBO than in LBO, and in visceral compared to subcutaneous obesity. Women with combined UBO and visceral obesity had significantly higher cardiac sympathetic and parasympathetic activity than any other subgroup. We conclude that cardiac autonomic function as assessed by heart rate spectral analysis varies in women depending on their regional body fat distribution. 相似文献

Cation binding at 5 degrees C by aequorin, a bioluminescent protein from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria, was examined by means of Mn(II) EPR. The bioluminescence of aequorin is triggered by Ca(II), as well as by trivalent lanthanides, and is inhibited by Mg(II) and Mn(II). Three EF-hand Ca(II)-binding domains have been identified in the aequorin amino acid sequence. In the work reported here, active native aequorin was found to have a single tight binding site for Mn(II) with an association constant of 0.566 microM-1. Ca(II) and La(III) competed for the Mn(II) site with association constants of 1.92 microM-1 and 1.38 microM-1, respectively. The affinity of Ca(II) and La(III) for their two other (presumed) sites on aequorin was an order of magnitude less than their affinity for the Mn(II) site. Mg(II) competed for the Mn(II) site as well but with a much smaller association constant of 0.0109 microM-1. Ca(II)-independent discharged aequorin did not bind Mn(II) to a significant degree. Conjectures on the location of the Mn(II) site in the aequorin amino acid sequence and on the relationship between the binding parameters of the cations and their influence on aequorin activity are given. 相似文献

The teneurin C-terminal associated peptides (TCAP) are a recently discovered family of bioactive peptides that can attenuate aspects of the behavioral stress responses of rats. Because TCAP has some structural similarity to the corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) family of peptides, and modulates elements of the stress response, TCAP may act to modulate CRF actions in vivo. This hypothesis was tested by investigating anxiety-related behaviors in male rats following repeated intravenous (IV) TCAP-1 administration with either an acute intracerebroventricular (ICV) or IV CRF challenge. TCAP-1 alone did not affect behavioral responses significantly, however did significantly affect CRF-regulated behaviors depending on CRF's mode of injection. In both the elevated plus-maze and the open field tests, TCAP-1 had an anxiolytic effect on ICV CRF responses as indicated by decreased stretched-attend postures in the elevated plus maze (p<0.05), and increased center time and center entries in the open field (p<0.05). However, prior TCAP-1 treatment has an anxiogenic effect on the IV CRF-induced behaviors (decreased center entries and total distance in the open field (p<0.05)). TCAP-1's actions are not mediated through acute changes in glucocorticoid levels and may occur via a central action in the brain. A fluorescently (FITC)-labeled TCAP-1 analog was IV-administered to investigate whether IV TCAP-1 has the potential to regulate central mechanisms by crossing the blood-brain barrier. FITC-TCAP-1 was detected in blood vessels and fibers in the brain indicating that uptake into the brain is a possible route for its interaction with CRF and its receptors. Thus, TCAP may modulate CRF-associated behaviors by a direct action in the CNS. 相似文献
