The Mediterranean evergreen vegetation of Sicily, comprised in the belt of the Quercetea ilicis, occupies a large part of the island. Human intervention (cutting, fire, pasture) has brought about a degradation of the natural vegetation. This study is based on our phytosociological research of the Quercetea ilicis belt on Sicily.

With the ‘habitat comparison’ method, the dynamical relations between the different vegetation units have been defined.

We distinguish the following stages, with reference to their vegetation structure:

  • a herbaceous stage formed by steppic vegetation, preceded by various types of nitrophilous-ruderal vegetation on abandoned fields;

  • a garrigue stage dominated by half-shrubs;

  • a macquis stage with various distinct plant communities, four communities being important in regressive successions, and three in progressive ones;

  • a woodland and shrub-woodland stage with three different substages: pre-existent forests, present woodlands, and woodlands which tend towards the final, stable stage of vegetation (potential natural vegetation).

The dynamic relationships both in progressive and regressive successions have been synthesized in a scheme. In this scheme we have shown the main stages of the vegetation in their dynamics and we have constructed different series of vegetation types in two altitudinal belts, which are determined by varying environmental conditions of today.

The results also show that in some cases the progressive series follow different pathways than the regressive series, and the final stage of the progressive series is different from the original vegetation.

The reduction potentials of 22 yeast cytochrome c peroxidase (CcP) mutants were determined at pH 7.0 in order to determine the effect of both heme pocket and surface mutations on the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox couple of CcP, as well as to determine the range in redox potentials that could be obtained through point mutations in the enzyme. Spectroscopic properties of the Fe(III) and Fe(II) forms of the mutant enzymes are also reported. The mutations include variants in the distal and proximal heme pockets as well as on the enzyme surface and involve single, double, and triple point mutations. A spectrochemical redox titration technique used in this study gave an E(0') value of -189 mV for yeast CcP compared to a previously reported value of -194 mV determined by potentiometry [C.W. Conroy, P. Tyma, P.H. Daum, J.E. Erman, Biochim. Biophys. Acta 537 (1978) 62-69]. Both positive and negative shifts in the reduction potential from that of the wild-type enzyme were observed, spanning a range of 113 mV. The His-52-->Asn mutation gave the most negative potential, -259 mV, while a triple mutant in which the three distal pocket residues, Arg-48, Trp-51, and His-52, were all converted to leucine residues gave the most positive potential, -146 mV.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine whether Staphylococcus aureus of phage type 187 are genetically homogenous with the use of digestion of chromosomal DNA with SmaI and separation of the DNA by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Sixteen S. aureus phage type 187 were isolated from the hospital patients (12) and the healthy carriers (4) in twelve medical centres in Poland during 1991 and 2005. The PFGE typing proved that the phage type 187 isolates have the same PFGE type (except for one) and constitute one clone.  相似文献

Hyoscyamine-6beta-hydroxylase (H6H) catalyses the conversion of hyoscyamine into its epoxide scopolamine, a compound with a higher added value in the pharmaceutical market than hyoscyamine. We report the establishment of tobacco cell cultures carrying the Hyoscyamus muticus h6h gene under the control of the promoter CAMV 35S. The cell cultures were derived from hairy roots obtained via genetically modified Agrobacterium rhizogenes carrying the pRi and pLAL21 plasmids. The cultures were fed with hyoscyamine, and 4 weeks later the amount of scopolamine produced was quantified by HPLC. The transgenic cell suspension cultures showed a considerable capacity for the bioconversion of hyoscyamine into scopolamine, and released it to the culture medium. Although the scale-up from shake-flask to bioreactor culture usually results in reduced productivities, our transgenic cells grown in a 5-L turbine stirred tank reactor in a batch mode significantly increased the scopolamine accumulation.  相似文献

We investigated the genetic differentiation of five X-chromosome STR markers among five native South American Amerindian populations inhabiting three different areas of the Gran Chaco: Mocoví, Chorote, Wichí, Lengua, and Ayoreo. The observed genetic structure showed correspondence with geographic distribution more clearly than previous information obtained from autosomal STRs for the same samples. On the other hand, X-chromosome STR data did not agree with linguistic affinities. These markers proved to be informative for the study of the native populations of the Gran Chaco region.  相似文献
