Consortia of catalase positive bacteria consisting of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas fluorescens, and Klebsiella pneumoniae, in both the planktonic form and as biofilms, disproportionate hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water. The biofilm, however, continued to disproportionate the hydrogen peroxide in the presence of the catalase inhibitor, 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole, while the planktonic organisms did not. While the bacterial catalase-peroxidase-dismutase system was probably responsible for the disproportionation of hydrogen peroxide in both cases, biofilms resisted inhibition of this enzyme system. 相似文献

The effect of filtering activity of D. polymorpha on nutrient dynamics in Lake Mikoajskie depended mostly on population density: D. polymorpha was important in N and P cycling in periods when its population density was medium or high. The amounts of N and P accumulated in mussel populations at medium density may be similar to those in emergent and submerged macrophytes. However, mussels remove nutrients from cycling matter for a much longer time than do macrophytes. The amounts of nutrients accumulated in a mussel population are several times lower than the quantities which flow through it. 相似文献

Anaerobic dehalogenation of aromatic compounds is a well-documented phenomenon. However, the effects of operating parameters such as pH have received little attention despite their potential impact on treatment processes using dehalogenating organisms. In this work the effect of pH on the dehalogenation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) was studied using defined media containing one of several non-fermentable buffering agents (MOPS, TRICINE, BICINE, CHES), and no chloride ions. The dechlorination process was followed by monitoring the disappearance of 2,4,6-TCP, as well as the appearance of its dehalogenation products, i.e., 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), 4-chlorophenol (4-CP), and chloride ions. The results indicate that dechlorination occurs only if the pH is within the range 8.0–8.8. The newly formed 2,4-DCP was also dehalogenated in the process. However, even within this pH range dechlorination ceased when all 2,4,6-TCP and 2,4-DCP was converted to 4-CP. Stoichiometric amounts of all dehalogenation products (including chloride) could be recovered at any stage during the process. In addition, the biomass concentration was measured. After an initial lag phase, it appeared that the rate of dechlorination per unit biomass (proportional to the Cl– concentration divided by the biomass concentration) went through a rapid increase and then remained constant throughout the process. This indicates that the dechlorinating organism(s) either make up the entire population or constitute a stable fraction of it.

Demand for sustainably produced biomass is expected to increase with the need to provide renewable commodities, improve resource security and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with COP26 commitments. Studies have demonstrated additional environmental benefits of using perennial biomass crops (PBCs), when produced appropriately, as a feedstock for the growing bioeconomy, including utilisation for bioenergy (with or without carbon capture and storage). PBCs can potentially contribute to Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) (2023–27) objectives provided they are carefully integrated into farming systems and landscapes. Despite significant research and development (R&D) investment over decades in herbaceous and coppiced woody PBCs, deployment has largely stagnated due to social, economic and policy uncertainties. This paper identifies the challenges in creating policies that are acceptable to all actors. Development will need to be informed by measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) of greenhouse gas emissions reductions and other environmental, economic and social metrics. It discusses interlinked issues that must be considered in the expansion of PBC production: (i) available land; (ii) yield potential; (iii) integration into farming systems; (iv) R&D requirements; (v) utilisation options; and (vi) market systems and the socio-economic environment. It makes policy recommendations that would enable greater PBC deployment: (1) incentivise farmers and land managers through specific policy measures, including carbon pricing, to allocate their less productive and less profitable land for uses which deliver demonstrable greenhouse gas reductions; (2) enable greenhouse gas mitigation markets to develop and offer secure contracts for commercial developers of verifiable low-carbon bioenergy and bioproducts; (3) support innovation in biomass utilisation value chains; and (4) continue long-term, strategic R&D and education for positive environmental, economic and social sustainability impacts. 相似文献

Due to its versatility and storability, biomass is an important resource for renewable materials and energy. Miscanthus hybrids combine high yield potential, low input demand, tolerance of certain marginal land types and several ecosystem benefits. To date, miscanthus breeding has focussed on increasing yield potential by maximising radiation interception through: (1) selection for early emergence, (2) increasing the growth rate to reach canopy closure as fast as possible, and (3) delayed flowering and senescence. The objective of this study is to compare early season re-growth in miscanthus hybrids cultivated across Europe. Determination of differences in early canopy development on end-of-year yield traits is required to provide information for breeding decisions to improve future crop performance. For this purpose, a trial was planted with four miscanthus hybrids (two novel seed-based hybrids M. sinensis × sinensis [M sin × sin] and M. sacchariflorus × sinensis [M sac × sin], a novel rhizome-based M sac × sin and a standard Miscanthus × giganteus [M × g] clone) in the UK, Germany, Croatia and Italy, and was monitored in the third and fourth growing season. We determined differences between the hybrids in base temperature, frost sensitivity and emergence strategy. M × g and M sac × sin mainly emerged from belowground plant organs, producing fewer but thicker shoots at the beginning of the growing season but these shoots were susceptible to air frosts (determined by recording 0°C 2 m above ground surface). By contrast, M sin × sin emerged 10 days earlier, avoiding damage by late spring frosts and producing a high number of thinner shoots from aboveground shoots. Therefore, we recommend cultivating M sac × sin at locations with low risk and M sin × sin at locations with higher risk of late spring frosts. Selecting miscanthus hybrids that produce shoots throughout the vegetation period is an effective strategy to limit the risk of late frost damage and avoid reduction in yield from a shortened growing season. 相似文献

Stimulation of pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) improves functional recovery of postischemic hearts. This study examined the potential for a mechanism mediated by substrate-dependent proton production and intracellular pH. After 20 min of ischemia, isolated rabbit hearts were reperfused with or without 5 mM dichloroacetate (DCA) in the presence of either 5 mM glucose, 5 mM glucose + 2.5 mM lactate, or 5 mM glucose + 2.5 mM pyruvate. DCA inhibits PDH kinase, increasing the proportion of dephosphorylated, active PDH. Unlike pyruvate or glucose alone, lactate + glucose did not support the effects of DCA on the recovery of rate-pressure product (RPP) (without DCA, RPP = 14,000 +/- 1,200, n = 6; with DCA, RPP = 13,700 +/- 1,800, n = 9). Intracellular pH, from (31)P nuclear magnetic resonance spectra, returned to normal within 2.1 min of reperfusion with all substrates except for lactate + glucose + DCA or lactate + DCA, which delayed pH recovery for up to 12 min (at 2.1 min pH = 6. 00 +/- 0.08, lactate + glucose + DCA; pH = 6.27 +/- 0.34, for lactate + DCA). Hearts were also reperfused after 10 min of ischemia with 0.5 mM palmitate + 5 mM DCA and either 2.5 mM pyruvate or 2.5 mM lactate. Again, intracellular pH recovery was delayed in the presence of lactate. PDH activation in the presence of lactate also decreased coupling of oxidative metabolism to mechanical work. These findings have implications for therapeutic use of stimulated carbohydrate oxidation in stunned hearts. 相似文献

The aim of investigations was to examine whether diploid and aneuploid tumours of oral cavity differ in frequencies of occurrence of individual phases of cell cycle and of apoptosis. Investigations were carried out on 53 tumours using techniques of image cytometry. The studies were performed on properly isolated cells of tumours, which were stained using Feulgen method and analysed by image cytometry. Using a suitable computer programme, the percentages of cells present in individual phases of cell cycle and in apoptosis were estimated. No respective differences could be disclosed between diploid and aneuploid tumours. In addition, the ratios of the fraction of cells in S phase of the cell cycle and those in apoptosis were calculated and were found to carry certain prognostic significance in patients with squamous cell carcinomas of oral cavity. 相似文献

This paper reviews the results of the intense experimental and theoretical studies on the influence of selected metals on the electronic system of biologically important molecules such as benzoic, 2-hydroxybenzoic and 3-pyridine carboxylic acids as well as 5-carboxyuracil. The research involved following techniques: infrared (FT-IR), Raman (FT-Raman), FT-IR Ar matrix, electronic absorption spectroscopy (UV/visible), nuclear magnetic resonance ((1)H, (13)C, (15)N, (17)O NMR), X-ray and quantum mechanical calculations. The influence of metals on the electronic system was examined through comparison of the changes in so called "logical series". The exemplary series are: Li-->Na-->K-->Rb-->Cs, Na(I)-->Ca(II)-->La(III)-->Th(IV); Na(I)-->Mg(II)-->Al(III) or long series of La(III) and fourteen lanthanides La(III)-->Ce(III)-->Lu(III). The correlation between the perturbation of the electronic system of ligands and the position of metals in the periodic table was found. The influence of the carboxylic anion structure and the effect of hydration on the perturbation of the electronic system of molecule were also discussed. The partial explanation in what way metals disturb and stabilize electronic system of studied ligands was done. It is necessary to carry out the physico-chemical studies of benzoates, salicylates, 3-pyridine carboxylates and isoorotates in order to understand the nature of the interactions of these compounds with their biological targets (e.g., receptors in the cell or important cell components). The results of this study make possible to predict some properties of a molecule, such as its reactivity, durability of complex compounds, and kinship to enzymes. 相似文献
