SYNOPSIS. The distributions and relationships of exemplary speciesgroups of the Neotropical frog genera Cycloramphus and Leptodactylusare discussed in terms of current biogeographic models. Fromthis exercise, the following conclusions emerge: (1) frog biogeographyis and will remain primarily a correlative science; (2) bothmorphological and genetic data are required to choose amongalternate biogeographic models; (3) frog speciation events significantlypredate recent distributional events complicating the understandingof past and recent distributions; (4) both data and theory areinadequate to completely understand Neotropical frog biogeographyat present.  相似文献

Land use and land cover data play a central role in climate change assessments. These data originate from different sources and inventory techniques. Each source of land use/cover data has its own domain of applicability and quality standards. Often data are selected without explicitly considering the suitability of the data for the specific application, the bias originating from data inventory and aggregation, and the effects of the uncertainty in the data on the results of the assessment. Uncertainties due to data selection and handling can be in the same order of magnitude as uncertainties related to the representation of the processes under investigation. While acknowledging the differences in data sources and the causes of inconsistencies, several methods have been developed to optimally extract information from the data and document the uncertainties. These methods include data integration, improved validation techniques and harmonization of classification systems. Based on the data needs of global change studies and the data availability, recommendations are formulated aimed at optimal use of current data and focused efforts for additional data collection. These include: improved documentation using classification systems for land use/cover data; careful selection of data given the specific application and the use of appropriate scaling and aggregation methods. In addition, the data availability may be improved by the combination of different data sources to optimize information content while collection of additional data must focus on validation of available data sets and improved coverage of regions and land cover types with a high level of uncertainty. Specific attention in data collection should be given to the representation of land management (systems) and mosaic landscapes.  相似文献

At the local scale, spatial aggregations in ant distribution are often thought to be driven by competitive interactions among dominant ant species, although niche preferences and habitat heterogeneity might also lead to patchiness. Nevertheless, competitive interactions might be particularly important in agroecosystems that are structurally more homogeneous than natural habitats. The spatial patterns of ants in two Australian vineyards were investigated by intensive pitfall trapping to examine if non‐random patterns occur and whether these might be the result of competitive species interactions as well as the influence of woody vegetation adjacent to the vineyards. Null model analyses suggested competitive species interactions within ant assemblages that might have been driven by numerically dominant species, even though both positive and negative associations between these were found. Consistent spatial aggregations indicated significant spatial overlap in distributions of some species. Such overlap suggests that potential coexistence might be attributed to temporal partitioning or differences in foraging strategies. The presence of woody vegetation had a marked influence on ant assemblage structure and competitive interactions, and might facilitate coexistence by increasing resource heterogeneity. The implications of these findings for sampling strategies and ecological processes within vineyards are discussed.  相似文献

1. Rapid environmental change occurring in high‐latitude regions has the potential to cause extensive thawing of permafrost. Retrogressive thaw slumps are a particularly spectacular form of permafrost degradation that can significantly impact lake–water chemistry; however, to date, the effects on aquatic biota have received little attention. 2. We used a diatom‐based palaeolimnological approach featuring a paired lake study design to examine the impact of thaw slumping on freshwater ecosystems in the low Arctic of western Canada. We compared biological responses in six lakes affected by permafrost degradation with six undisturbed, reference lakes. 3. Slump‐affected lakes exhibited greater biological change than the paired reference systems, although all systems have undergone ecologically significant changes over the last 200 years. Four of the six reference systems showed an increase in the relative abundance of planktonic algal taxa (diatoms and scaled chrysophytes), the earliest beginning about 1900, consistent with increased temperature trends in this region. 4. The response of sedimentary diatoms to thaw slumping was understandably variable, but primarily related to the intensity of disturbance and associated changes in aquatic habitat. Five of the slump‐affected lakes recorded increases in the abundance and diversity of periphytic diatoms at the presumed time of slump initiation, consistent with increased water clarity and subsequent development of aquatic macrophyte communities. Slump‐affected lakes generally displayed lower nutrient levels; however, in one system, thaw slumping, induced by an intense fire at the site in 1968, ostensibly led to pronounced nutrient enrichment that persists today. 5. Our results demonstrate that retrogressive thaw slumping represents an important stressor to the biological communities of lakes in the western Canadian Arctic and can result in a number of limnological changes. We also show that palaeolimnological methods are effective for inferring the timing and response of aquatic ecosystems to permafrost degradation. These findings provide the first long‐term perspective on the biological response to permafrost thaw, a stressor that will become increasingly important as northern landscapes respond to climate change.  相似文献

Dorothy M. Skinner's interest in the study of crustaceans grewout of her experiences as a student and teaching assistant inthe Experimental Invertebrate Zoology course at the Marine BiologicalLaboratory, Woods Hole, MA. Her early training in both biologyand chemistry was instrumental in allowing her to pursue linesof research as diverse as control of molting and regeneration,structure of the crustacean integument, and characteristicsof satellite DNAs throughout her career. Dorothy published anumber of landmark papers in crustacean biology over the years,which served to inspire the work of numerous biologists. Thebreadth and depth of her contributions was made apparent inthis symposium, in which eleven researchers presented theirnewest findings in the areas of satellite DNA, control of regenerationand molting, dynamics of muscle atrophy and reorganization,and structure and evolution of arthropod proteins.  相似文献

Several Central American species of Piper sect. Macrostachys have obligate associations with ants, in which the ant partner derives food and shelter from modified plant structures and, in turn, protects the plant against fungal infection and herbivory. In addition to these obligate ant-plants (i.e. myrmecophytes), several other species in Piper have resident ants only sometimes (facultative), and still other plant species never have resident ants. Sheathing petioles of sect. Macrostachys form the domatia in which ants nest. Myrmecophytes in sect. Macrostachys have tightly closed petiole sheaths with bases that clasp the stem. These sheathing petioles appear to be the single most important plant character in the association between ants and species of sect. Macrostachys . We examined the structure and variation of petioles in these species, and our results indicate that minor modifications in a small number of petiolar characters make the difference between petioles that are suitable for habitation by ants and those that are not.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 153 , 181–191.  相似文献

The classification of the genera of the widely distributed Old World tribe Pseudoterpnini is reviewed and 34 genera are recognized. Two new generic synonyms ( Sterictopsis Warren and Oxyphanes Turner as synonyms of Rhuma Walker), and 21 new or reinstated combinations are established. Representative moths of all the genera are illustrated in colour (upper side and underside), and genitalia of all genera are illustrated in monochrome (162 figures). All the known species and subspecies of Pseudoterpnini are listed (321), together with their synonyms. The Pseudoterpnini and their characters are assessed, and many genera are newly assigned to the tribe.  © 2007 Natural History Museum, London. Abstract: Survival and cause-specific mortality estimates are needed to develop effective conservation strategies for the endangered ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) in the United States. We radiomonitored 80 ocelots (36 F, 44 M) from 1983 to 2002 and analyzed survival and cause-specific mortality rates. Pooled estimates of annual survival rates differed between resident (Ŝ = 0.87) and transient (Ŝ = 0.57) ocelots (P = 0.02); therefore, survival and cause-specific mortality analyses were partitioned for resident and transient ocelots. Sex-specific annual survival was similar between resident ocelots (M = 0.92, F = 0.83, P = 0.16) and transient ocelots (M = 0.53, F = 0.63, P = 0.75). Most mortalities were from human (e.g., ocelot-vehicle collisions; M = 45%) and natural (e.g., animal attack, disease; M = 35%) sources. Transient ocelots had higher natural mortality rates (disease, intraspecific mortality; M = 0.26) than resident ocelots (M = 0.04, P = 0.03). Other sources of mortality did not differ (P ≥ 0.10) between resident or transient ocelots or male and female resident or transient ocelots (P ≥ 0.08). Human population expansion within the Lower Rio Grande Valley of southern Texas, USA, will increase transportation-related problems and decrease the quantity of ocelot habitat, leading to increased ocelot-vehicle collisions and possibly cause more transient behavior, thus significantly lowering ocelot survival. Research and development of ocelot road underpasses should be conducted to mitigate ocelot-vehicle collisions.  相似文献

The classification of the Neotropical genera of the Ennominae is reviewed and 267 genera are recognised to occur in this region. Three new genera are described and three others are reinstated, while 48 generic synonyms are newly established. Other changes established in this work include 14 species synonyms and 237 new or reinstated combinations. External features and genitalia of representative members of the genera are illustrated (753 figures). All the known Neotropical species and subspecies of Ennominae are listed ( c . 3470), plus their synonyms. The aim of the present study was to study the sensibility in the area of saline-induced muscle pain. In three experiments, ten subjects were exposed to computer-controlled infusion of 0.5 ml isotonic (0.9%) or hypertonic (9%) saline into the anterior tibial muscle. The pain intensity was assessed on a visual analogue scale (VAS). The pain threshold (PT) to pressure and electrical stimulation in muscle and subcutaneous tissues was determined. Three experiments were performed in which infusion of hypertonic saline produced significantly higher VAS scores than isotonic saline. In all three experiments, there was no significant difference in PT obtained after infusion of isotonic saline compared with infusion of hypertonic saline. In experiment 1, the PT was determined at the infusion site and 4 cm from the infusion site. At the infusion site, the pressure PT decreased (- 19 2%) 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 min after infusion of isotonic and hypertonic saline, but remained unchanged 4 cm from the infusion site. The intramuscular electrical PT at the infusion site and 4 cm from the infusion site increased significantly (29 6%) 5, 7 and 9 min after saline infusion. In experiment 2, the pressure PT and the intramuscular electrical PT were recorded after two infusions of saline separated by 1 day. The day after the first infusion, the pressure PT was decreased compared with the PT before the first infusion, but the electrical PT was not affected. Moreover, the hypertonic saline infusion given on the second day produced significantly higher (130 50%) VAS scores than the infusion given on the first day. In experiment 3, the PT was determined in the subcutaneous tissue, but no significant effects of saline infusion were found. The present placebo-controlled experiments failed to show muscular or subcutaneous hyperalgesia after saline-induced muscle pain per se.  相似文献
