The microclimate at Thermocline Cave (lat, 30° 45′S, long, 149° 43′E) was investigated by measuring air temperature and relative humidity at five stations on 18 occasions from September 1971 to December, 1973. The activity, body weight and roosting sites of the bat Miniopterus schreibersii blepotis in the cave were recorded on each visit. Relative humidity in the cave was generally high and paralleled temperature. The cave exhibited a range of temperatures from 9 to 19.5°C but bats selected roosting sites only in a part of this range. During the autumn when the bats arrived and were feeding, their body weights were low, and they roosted in a domed area at the rear of the cave with a temperature of 19.5°C. As they became less active and body weight increased they moved to cooler parts (9.5-11°C) towards the front of the cave and underwent periods of torpor, in one case lasting for at least 12 days. From July to September body weight decreased. The bats became more active in September and most had left the cave by October. It appears that M.s. blepotis can detect temperature differences of 1°C. They used this ability to select cold areas with stable high humidity in Thermocline Cave to under go periods of winter torpor.  相似文献

The bulk ore carrier Apollo Sea sank near Dassen Island, South Africa, on 20 June 1994 during a period of winter storms. Approximately 10 000 African (Jackass) Penguins Spheniscus demersus were oiled, collected and transported to the SANCCOB rescue centre; 5213 were released after cleaning, 4076 with flipper bands. We believe that most of the penguins oiled during this incident reached an island or the mainland alive, and that there was no mass mortality in the wild at the time of the oil spill. Birds from all parts of the breeding range were oiled, but most were from Robben and Dassen Islands. The overwhelming majority of released birds made the transition from the rescue centre to the wild successfully; 2652 had been resighted at breeding colonies within two years of their release; the cumulative number of birds was increasing steadily and an asymptote had not been reached by August 1996. There was a wide dispersal of released penguins, with recoveries and resightings over 1800 km of coastline between Algoa Bay and Walvis Bay.  相似文献

Microbial contamination of food is a concern to both food producers and consumers. For the food production industry surface sampling of foods is one of the simplest ways to monitor the microbial load. The objective of this experiment was to investigate the feasibility of using the less expensive and quicker "Pop-up" tape method instead of the conventional swab/rinse method for the microbial sampling of meat surfaces. An analyst can place the unit on the wrist and then use both hands to lay out all the necessary materials and take the sample with one hand. The "Pop-up" tape method was able to measure microbial loads up to 2.2 log CFU/cm2 on meat surfaces. The conventional swab/rinse method was able to measure up to 8.3 log CFU/cm2 on meat surfaces. The correlation coefficient (R) between the two methods was 0.91 (n=42). These data show that the "Pop-up" tape method is a viable alternative to other methods for estimating microbial surface contamination.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Urosporidium cannoni n. sp. was found in most tissues of a polyclad turbellarian associated with commercial oyster farms from eastern Moreton Bay, Australia. Mature spores had 11 to 13 episporal tails at irregular intervals around the spore wall. The spherule, prominent in development, dispersed as the spores matured. Spores were found within cysts that contained up to a few hundred spores at the same stage of development. Mature cysts occurred in groups and their masses of dark, golden spores resulted in black patches on the otherwise red-brown turbellarian. The infection may have commercial importance.  相似文献

Exotic Wisteria species are highly favoured for their horticultural qualities and have been cultivated in North America since the early 1800s. This study determines the identity, genetic diversity and hybrid status of 25 Asian Wisteria cultivars using plastid, mitochondrial and nuclear DNA data. Fifteen (60%) hybrid cultivars were identified. All of the ‘Wisteria sinensis’ cultivars sampled are hybrids with W. floribunda. Although W. sinensis and W. floribunda are recognized invasive species in the southeastern USA, the relationships of horticultural cultivars to naturalized plants was previously unknown. Haplotype analysis of nuclear data identifies four haplotypes shared between cultivated stock and naturalized populations in the southeastern USA. In addition, US invasive haplotypes are present in New Zealand‐derived cultivars although, to date, naturalized Wisteria has not been documented in New Zealand. ABSTRACT Off-road recreation on public lands in North America has increased dramatically in recent years. Wild ungulates are sensitive to human activities, but the effect of off-road recreation, both motorized and nonmotorized, is poorly understood. We measured responses of elk (Cervus elaphus) to recreational disturbance in northeast Oregon, USA, from April to October, 2003 and 2004. We subjected elk to 4 types of recreational disturbance: all-terrain vehicle (ATV) riding, mountain biking, hiking, and horseback riding. Motion sensors inside radiocollars worn by 13 female elk recorded resting, feeding, and travel activities at 5-minute intervals throughout disturbance and control periods. Elk fed and rested during control periods, with little time spent traveling. Travel time increased in response to all 4 disturbances and was highest in mornings. Elk travel time was highest during ATV exposure, followed by exposure to mountain biking, hiking, and horseback riding. Feeding time decreased during ATV exposure and resting decreased when we subjected elk to mountain biking and hiking disturbance in 2003. Our results demonstrated that activities of elk can be substantially affected by off-road recreation. Mitigating these effects may be appropriate where elk are a management priority. Balancing management of species like elk with off-road recreation will become increasingly important as off-road recreational uses continue to increase on public lands in North America.  相似文献

Preferences for mates carrying dissimilar genes at the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) may help animals increase offspring pathogen resistance or avoid inbreeding. Such preferences have been reported across a range of vertebrates, but have rarely been investigated in social species other than humans. We investigated mate choice and MHC dynamics in wild baboons (Papio ursinus). MHC Class II DRB genes and 16 microsatellite loci were genotyped across six groups (199 individuals). Based on the survey of a key segment of the gene‐rich MHC, we found no evidence of mate choice for MHC dissimilarity, diversity or rare MHC genotypes. First, MHC dissimilarity did not differ from random expectation either between parents of the same offspring or between immigrant males and females from the same troop. Second, female reproductive success was not influenced by MHC diversity or genotype frequency. Third, population genetic structure analysis revealed equally high genotypic differentiation among troops, and comparable excess heterozygosity within troops for juveniles, at both Mhc‐DRB and neutral loci. Nevertheless, the age structure of Mhc‐DRB heterozygosity suggested higher longevity for heterozygotes, which should favour preferences for MHC dissimilarity. We propose that high levels of within‐group outbreeding, resulting from group‐living and sex‐biased dispersal, might weaken selection for MHC‐disassortative mate choice.  相似文献

Capsaicin burn was induced by a one percent solution of Tabasco TM sauce in spring water. Four foods, rice, water, butter, and pineapple juice, warmed to 35°C, were used to reduce the burn. A no food treatment was used as a control. Subjects recorded perceived burn intensity by placing slash marks on line scales at set time intervals throughout the tests. Burn was significantly reduced while the foods were in the mouth but increased after the foods were expectorated. The decreased burn may be due to the very presence of a food in the mouth.  相似文献

Twenty-seven protein coding loci were examined by means of horizontal starch gel electrophoresis in samples of larvae from four populations of the stalk borer Eldana saccharina Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in Natal, South Africa. The populations were collected in two localities approximately 250 km apart. In each locality a sample was obtained from sugarcane and also from the locally most abundant indigenous host plant of this insect (Cyperuspapyrus L. in one locality and C. dives Delile - synonomous with C. immensus CB CI. - in the other). More than one allele was detected at eight of the loci in all four populations and at a further locus in three of the populations; the other 18 loci were monomorphic for the same allele in all populations. Average expected heterozygosity over the 27 loci was approximately 0.12 in all populations. Genetic distances among the populations were small, but were greater between the two populations from the indigenous hosts and the two from sugarcane than within either of these pairs of populations. Possible explanations of these results are discussed.  相似文献
