The reproductive compatibility of New World screwworms, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), from North Africa and a strain being mass produced for the Mexican eradication programme was examined to assess the feasibility of using flies from the Mexican screwworm mass production facility for a sterile insect technique eradication programme in North Africa. Males from the production strain mated randomly with females from North Africa and from the production strain when both were present. Neither strain of males discriminated between cuticular extracts of North African and production strain females containing a contact sex pheromone. Interstrain crosses between North African flies and production flies were fertile and produced fertile progeny. Chromosome morphology did not differ significantly between the two strains and homologue pairing was normal in hybrid meiotic and polytene nuclei. Mitochondrial DNA restriction site analyses indicated that the genetic divergence of the North African strain from Mexican and Central American strains was within the range of the diversity observed in Central American, Mexican and Caribbean populations. Test results indicate that New World screwworms from North Africa are reproductively compatible with the strain currently being mass produced in Mexico. Mating barriers should not impede the progress of an eradication programme using the sterile insect technique in North Africa with sterile screwworms from the Mexican mass production facility.  相似文献

Somatic hybrid plants were produced by fusion of protoplasts from cell cultures of the Nicotiana tabacum L. sulfur mutant Su/Su and from leaf mesophyll of Nicotiana glauca Graham. After fusion the N. glauca protoplasts failed to survive under the selected culture condition. From the hybrid cells light green shoots were produced. The hybrid plants exhibited intermediate characters between parental species with respect to leaf morphology, trichome density, floral structure and flower color. The chromosome number of 25 hybrid plants was 2n = 72 and both N. glauca and N. tabacum chromosomes were identified in the hybrids. Results of isoenzyme analysis showed bands of both parents and a specific (hybrid) band for aspartate amino-transferase. Small subunit fraction-1-protein of somatic hybrids also consisted of the sum of N. glauca and N. tabacum bands. Leaf spot formation associated with the Su locus of N. tabacum was observed in somatic hybrids.  相似文献

1. Warming trends are evident in many parts of the globe but are especially marked at higher latitudes, with complex effects on the biota that include direct effects on growth potential and indirect effects through food webs. 2. Air temperatures have been increasing over the past 50 years in southwestern Alaska, affecting the growth and population dynamics of many organisms, including a variety of aquatic species such as the freshwater mussel Anodonta beringiana. 3. We collected freshwater mussels from Iliamna Lake, in the Bristol Bay region of Alaska, and measured their shells to examine climatic effects on growth patterns. 4. Linear mixed effects models and ordinary least square linear regressions revealed strong positive correlations between local air temperatures (especially in May, October and the summer months) and inter‐annual variation in mussel growth. Slower mussel growth was also significantly correlated with later date of ice break‐up, which was linked to air temperatures in late spring.  相似文献

The male adult, the spermatophore and the spermatozoa of Atlanta gaudichaudi are described. No parasperm are demonstrable. The ultrastructure of the spermatozoa is shown to differ fundamentally from that of the Archaeogastropoda and Neritopsina and to conform broadly with that of the Mesogastropoda (excepting Cyclophoracea, Viviparacea and Cerithacea), the Neogastropoda and the epitonacean heterogastropods. In having a nuclear fossa, containing the axoneme, which penetrates the entire length of the nucleus as the intranuclear canal, the spermatozoon especially resembles that of some members of the Rissoacea, Littorinacea, Eulimacea, Tonnacea, Volutacea and Conacea. Absence, in Atlanta of type 7 parasperm ( sensu Koike 1985), which characterize the Calyptraeacea, Cypraeacea, Tonnacea, Buccinacea, Volutacea (including the Mitracea) and most Conacea, or of type 8 parasperm of the Conidae, contraindicates heteropod relationship with these taxa. Relationship to the Rissoacea cannot be ruled out, though presence of oligopyrene, cusperm-like sperm in these (Bythiniidae) and pterotracheid heteropods is a questionable indication of affinity. Relationship of heteropods with the Littorinacea is suggested by similarity of the sperm, presence in carinariid heteropods and littorinids of nurse cells, and apparent homology of the male reproductive apparatus in both groups. The latter two similarities require confirmation, however. It is suggested that deposition of spermatophores on the exterior of the female in atlantid heteropods is a primitive mode of sperm transfer compatible with relationship with the Littorinacea.  相似文献

The freshwater, schistosome-transmitting snail, Biomphalariaglabrata is a simultaneous hermaphrodite which can reproduceby both cross-and selffertilisation, but despite the medicalimportance of this species, little is known about the matingstrategies adopted by wild-type individuals from natural populations.The identification of cross-fertilised progeny is a prerequisitefor both evolutionary studies of the relative fitness of differentreproductive strategies, and for the production of exclusivelyoutcrossed F1 populations for genetic mapping of biologicallyimportant phenotypes, most notably, resistance to schistosomeinfection. In this study, parents, offspring and ‘syntheticoffspring’ (controls) from four families of B. glabratarecently derived from wild populations were analysed using theRandom Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) assay. RAPDs were usedbecause they reveal more genetic variation, require less tissue(juvenile snails were only 4–5 mm diameter) than proteinelectrophoresis, are less laborious than other molecular analyses,and do not require sequence data. Seven of the 19 arbitrarysequence, oligonucleotide primers used gave bands that werepolymorophic between pairs of parent snails. Scoring the offspringfor the presence/absence of these polymorphic bands showed thatall the offspring tested were the products of cross-fertilisation.This study provides the first demonstration of the applicabilityof the RAPD technique to an analysis of fertilisation in wild-typeB. glabrata.
