Following a revision of Thapsia (Apiaceae) in north-western Africa, the name Thapsia platycarpa is resurrected and lectotypified for a species that grows between Algeria and Morocco, and a new species Thapsia cinerea is described from the Rif region of north-eastern Morocco. Morphological features that differentiate between these and other species ( T. villosa , T. garganica , T. transtagana and T. gymnesica ) are discussed. Recent debate on whether or not mahogany ( Swietenia macrophylla King) is threatened by the international timber trade has focused on the breadth of its range and estimates of the remaining stock of mahogany trees. These data are inadequate to reveal the status of mahogany populations, both because they are incomplete in areal extent and because they do not reveal population parameters such as the existence or density of young trees smaller than commercial size. However, there is sufficient information on the regeneration ecology of mahogany to indicate that under natural conditions this species regenerates in essentially even-aged stands after catastrophic disturbances destroy many or most trees, and, in the case of fires and flooding, saplings and seedlings as well. Adult mahoganies tend to survive these events, and regenerate by shedding seed onto the resulting gaps or clearings. This ecological strategy makes mahogany vulnerable to logging, first because juvenile mahoganies are not found in the understorey, and secondly because logging operations shortcircuit mahogany regeneration processes by selectively removing almost all mahogany seed sources while leaving standing competing vegetation of other species. Listing of mahogany in CITES Appendix II could provide both a mechanism to fill in gaps in information and an incentive to change current practices in favour of silvicultural management to provide for regeneration of this valuable timber species in forests subjected to logging.  相似文献

Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) and B. papayae Drew & Hancock represent a closely related sibling species pair for which the biological species limits are unclear; i.e. it is uncertain if they are truely two biological species, or one biological species which has been incorrectly split taxonomically. The geographical ranges of the two taxa are thought to abut or overlap on or around the Isthmus of Kra, a recognised biogeographic barrier located on the narrowest portion of the Thai Peninsula. We collected fresh material of B. dorsalis s.l. (i.e. B. dorsalis s.s.+ B. papayae) in a north–south transect down the Thai Peninsula, from areas regarded as being exclusively B. dorsalis s.s., across the Kra Isthmus, and into regions regarded as exclusively B. papayae. We carried out microsatellite analyses and took measurements of male genitalia and wing shape, both used previously to separate the taxa. No significant population structuring was found in the microsatellite analysis, consistent with one, predominantly panmictic population. Both morphological datasets showed consistent, clinal variation along the transect, without disjunction. No evidence supported historical vicariance driven by the Isthmus of Kra, and no dataset supported the current taxonomy of two species. Rather, within and across the area of range overlap or abutment between the two species, only continuous morphological and genetic variation was recorded. Recognition that morphological traits previously used to separate these taxa are continuous, and that there is no genetic evidence for population segregation in the region of suspected species overlap, is consistent with a growing body of literature that reports no evidence of biological differentiation between these taxa.  相似文献

Background aims. After a myocardial infarction (MI) atherosclerosis is accelerated leading to destabilization of the atherosclerotic plaque. mesenchymal stromal cells are a promising therapeutic option for atherosclerosis. Previously, we demonstrated a novel stem cell delivery technique, with adipose stem cells coupled to microbubbles (i.e., StemBells) as therapy after MI. In this study, we aim to investigate the effect of StemBell therapy on atherosclerotic plaques in an atherosclerotic mouse model after MI. Methods. MI was induced in atherosclerotic Apolipoprotein E–deficient mice that were fed a high-fat Western diet. Six days post-MI, the mice received either 5?×?105/100 µL StemBells or vehicle intravenously. The effects of StemBell treatment on the size and stability of aortic root atherosclerotic plaques and the infarcted heart were determined 28 days post-MI via (immuno)histological analyses. Moreover, monocyte subtypes and lipids in the blood were studied. Results. StemBell treatment resulted in significantly increased cap thickness, decreased intra-plaque macrophage density and increased percentage of intra-plaque anti-inflammatory macrophages and chemokines, without affecting plaque size and serum cholesterol/triglycerides. Furthermore, StemBell treatment significantly increased the percentage of anti-inflammatory macrophages within the infarcted myocardium but did not affect cardiac function nor infarct size. Finally, also the average percentage of anti-inflammatory monocytes in the circulation was increased after StemBell therapy. Discussion. StemBell therapy increased cap thickness and decreased intra-plaque inflammation after MI, indicative of stabilized atherosclerotic plaque. It also induced a shift of circulating monocytes and intra-plaque and intra-cardiac macrophages towards anti-inflammatory phenotypes. Hence, StemBell therapy may be a therapeutic option to prevent atherosclerosis acceleration after MI.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Alcian blue acts as a secretagogue and chemorepellent in a variety of unicellular eukaryotes. We report that alcian blue stimulates flagellar excision and induction of RNA encoding flagellar proteins in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii . Flagellar excision by alcian blue is dependent on extracellular Ca2+ and is blocked by La3+, ruthenium red, and neomycin, and so is similar to flagellar excision by acid shock. However, the adf-l mutant excises its flagella following alcian blue treatment, but not following acid shock, thus genetically distinguishing alcian-blue-induced excision from acid-shock-induced excision. Wild-type, but not adf-1, cells regrow their flagella in the continued presence of alcian blue. Wild-type cells that regrow flagella in the presence of alcian blue fail to excise their flagella in response to either increased concentrations of alcian blue or to acid shock. Alcian blue treatment of cells also induces RNA encoding flagellar components, but in a manner distinct from other means of stimulation. These results suggest that treating Chlamydomonas with the secretagogue alcian blue initiates a Ca2+ influx pathway and that prolonged treatment with alcian blue desensitizes the acid-shock-activated Ca2+ influx pathway to acid treatment. Alcian blue will thus be a useful excitatory ligand in future studies of receptor-mediated Ca2+ signaling in the Chlamydomonas flagellar regeneration system.  相似文献

Methanogens, thought to be present on early Earth, have a high requirement for Ni, suggesting that Ni utilization could be a potential biosignature for methanogens if enhanced Ni extraction from surrounding minerals accompanies methanogenic growth. To test the potential for such Ni extraction from minerals by methanogens, Ni release from Ni‐containing silicate glass was measured in Ni‐free growth medium in the presence of the methanogen Methanothermobacter thermoautotrophicus (average pH ∼7.0) and observed to be higher than an abiotic control (average pH ∼6.8). However, batch dissolution experiments and a siderophore assay indicate that cell exudates such as siderophores, low molecular weight organic acids, or lysates accompanying cell death are not responsible for the observed increase in Ni release rate. In addition, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows little to no evidence of direct microbe–mineral interactions such as biofilms or pitting. Instead, comparison with abiotic experiments suggests that changes in pH due to CO2 uptake may be responsible for enhanced dissolution in the presence of metabolizing cells. These results document that methanogens may not preferentially extract Ni from surrounding minerals although they may indirectly affect mineral reaction rates that are pH sensitive. Thus identifiable Ni biosignatures may not exist in the rock record to document the presence of methanogens on early Earth or Mars.  相似文献

The present study investigated the effects of island isolation on songs of three species of Australian songbirds. The characteristics of songs recorded from mainland locations were compared with those recorded on Rottnest Island off the coast of Western Australia. In all three species, the characteristics of the island song patterns differed from those on the mainland. Each species exhibited a different kind of divergence on the island, including (1) differences in the structure of individual notes and syllables constituting songs; (2) differences in temporal patterns of song delivery; and (3) differences in the order of notes within songs. In two species, the island songs were less complex than mainland songs and this may be the consequence of a founder effect. In the third species, island songs were more elaborate and diverse, and this may be the consequence of sexual selection, although other explanations are plausible. For several of these populations, quantitative comparisons were made between samples collected 6–7 years apart. In two species, new recordings made in 2004 were compared with those made in 1998 and, in one species, recordings made in 1991 were compared with those made in 1998. We used a nonintrusive field experiment carried out at six sites – Wales (UK), Denmark (DK), the Netherlands (NL), Hungary (HU), Sardinia (Italy – IT), and Catalonia (Spain – SP) – along a climatic and latitudinal gradient to examine the response of plant species richness and primary productivity to warming and drought in shrubland ecosystems. The warming treatment raised the plot daily temperature by ca. 1 °C, while the drought treatment led to a reduction in soil moisture at the peak of the growing season that ranged from 26% at the SP site to 82% in the NL site. During the 7 years the experiment lasted (1999–2005), we used the pin‐point method to measure the species composition of plant communities and plant biomass, litterfall, and shoot growth of the dominant plant species at each site. A significantly lower increase in the number of species pin‐pointed per transect was found in the drought plots at the SP site, where the plant community was still in a process of recovering from a forest fire in 1994. No changes in species richness were found at the other sites, which were at a more mature and stable state of succession and, thus less liable to recruitment of new species. The relationship between annual biomass accumulation and temperature of the growing season was positive at the coldest site and negative at the warmest site. The warming treatment tended to increase the aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) at the northern sites. The relationship between annual biomass accumulation and soil moisture during the growing season was not significant at the wettest sites, but was positive at the driest sites. The drought treatment tended to reduce the ANPP in the NL, HU, IT, and SP sites. The responses to warming were very strongly related to the Gaussen aridity index (stronger responses the lower the aridity), whereas the responses to drought were not. Changes in the annual aboveground biomass accumulation, litterfall, and, thus, the ANPP, mirrored the interannual variation in climate conditions: the most outstanding change was a decrease in biomass accumulation and an increase in litterfall at most sites during the abnormally hot year of 2003. Species richness also tended to decrease in 2003 at all sites except the cold and wet UK site. Species‐specific responses to warming were found in shoot growth: at the SP site, Globularia alypum was not affected, while the other dominant species, Erica multiflora, grew 30% more; at the UK site, Calluna vulgaris tended to grow more in the warming plots, while Empetrum nigrum tended to grow less. Drought treatment decreased plant growth in several studied species, although there were some species such as Pinus halepensis at the SP site or C. vulgaris at the UK site that were not affected. The magnitude of responses to warming and drought thus depended greatly on the differences between sites, years, and species and these multiple plant responses may be expected to have consequences at ecosystem and community level. Decreases in biodiversity and the increase in E. multiflora growth at the SP site as a response to warming challenge the assumption that sensitivity to warming may be less well developed at more southerly latitudes; likewise, the fact that one of the studied shrublands presented negative ANPP as a response to the 2003 heat wave also challenges the hypothesis that future climate warming will lead to an enhancement of plant growth and carbon sequestration in temperate ecosystems. Extreme events may thus change the general trend of increased productivity in response to warming in the colder sites.  相似文献

The composition and amount of carotenoid pigments were determined in etiolated seedling leaves of 6 barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) mutants, comprising 1 xantha and 5 tigrina mutants. All mutants had on a mole basis approximately the same content of carotenoids as the wild type. The mutants xan-u21, tig-n32, and tig-33 contained significantly higher amounts of carotenes than the wild type, ranging from 32 to 68% of the total carotenoid content as compared to the 4–8% found in the wild type. In the mutants tig-b23 and tig-o34, only a slight increase in the amount of carotenes was notable. The carotene content and composition in tig-d12 was indistinguishable from that of the wild type. The carotenes extracted from xan-u21, tig-b23, tig-n32, tig-33, and tig-o34 were characterized by adsorption chromatography and spectrophotometry. Mutant xan-u21 is in the dark blocked in β-carotene synthesis, and accumulates the aliphatic polyenes: phytofluene, proneurosporene, poly-cis-lycopenes, neo-lycopene and lycopene. The other four mutants synthesize β-carotene, but accumulate in addition various higher saturated carotenes, the main components being ζ-carotene in tig-b23, a lycopenic pigment in tig-n32 and tig-33, and lycopene in tig-o34. Accumulation of higher saturated carotenes appears correlated with specific aberrations of the membrane structure in plastids. The regulation of carotene and protochlorophyllide syntheses in etioplasts are closely linked as shown by the single gene mutants which affect both pathways. However, several mutants have been identified which cause defects in protochlorophyllide synthesis only.  相似文献
