As part of a multidisciplinary survey of populations in the Banks and Torres Islands of Vanuatu and the Southern and Central Districts of the Solomon Islands, nearly 2,400 persons have been tested for ABO blood groups and a number of serum protein and red cell enzyme genetic marker systems. For the ABO system, the populations are characterized in general by high gene O and low gene B frequencies except in two of the Polynesian Outlier Islands, Rennell and Bellona, which have high frequencies of B. Among the serum proteins, several alleles have distributions indicating significant movement of people between islands. These include Albumin New Guinea and the transferrin alleles Tf, and Tf, and Tf. Similar specific alleles for red cell enzymes also show distributions reflecting interisland population movement as well as contact with persons from outside the southern Pacific region. Examples are ACP in the acid phosphatase system, PGM and PGM, PGM and PGM, PGK4 and also HbJTongariki. The data available for 11 polymorphic systems were used to generate genetic distances. Of the four Polynesian Outlier Islands, Anuta is most remote genetically, with Rennell and Bellona also relatively isolated. The fourth Polynesian Outlier, Tikopia, occupies a position genetically close to the Melanesian populations of the Banks and Torres Islands and the southern Solomons. The history of early European contact and voyaging in the Pacific, as well as archaeological and linguistic evidence and local legends, indicate that significant movements of people occurred between islands and provided opportunities for genes to be introduced from Europeans, Africans, and Asians. The genetic marker studies give evidence for genes from all these sources, though at a low level. Despite this admixture, the Polynesian Outlier and Melanesian populations have preserved their own distinctive genetic patterns.  相似文献

When a rat is shocked via a prod in a chamber with sawdust on the floor it will typically push the flooring material with snout and forepaws towards and over the prod. We administered diazepam (.5 and 1.0 mg/kg) and oxprenolol (10 and 20 mg/kg) the day following shock exposure, and observed the complete suppression of burying by diazepam, and some suppression with oxprenolol. These effects are independent of interference with initial association of shock and prod, and of changes in general activity.  相似文献

Infection of BHK-21 cells with lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) virus resulted in the production of significant titers of complement-fixing (CF) antigen. The antigen was spontaneously released from the cells, but the highest titer of 1:16 was recovered by disruption of the infected cells by freeze-thawing in tryptose phosphate broth. The antigen could be partially separated from infectious virus by centrifugation. Furthermore, it was possible to detect LCM virus infection of cell cultures by the production of the CF antigen, but this method proved less sensitive than titration by intracerebral inoculation of mice. The CF antigen from cell cultures was at least as sensitive and specific as the reference antigen prepared from infected guinea pig spleen.  相似文献

Summary Experiments have been carried out to determine the basis for the dependence of chloroplast pigment synthesis on protein synthesis in dark-grown cells of Euglena gracilis greening in the light. The complete inhibition of chlorophyll synthesis brought about by actidione (10 g/ml) when added half way through the greening process was not relieved, even to the slightest extent, when 0.01 M -aminolaevulinic acid (ALA) was also present. The much smaller inhibition of chlorophyll synthesis brought about by chloramphenicol (2 mg/ml) was also relieved little, if at all, by the addition of ALA. It is concluded that the inhibition of chlorophyll synthesis by actidione can not be solely or primarily due to lack of ALA resulting from the decay of possibly labile enzymes of ALA synthesis, but could be due to inhibition of synthesis of the thylakoid structural protein. The results obtained with chloramphenicol are difficult to interpret because of the possibility that the drug, at high concentration, directly inhibits processes other than protein synthesis.Chlorophyll and carotenoid synthesis by E. gracilis were both markedly stimulated by the addition of ALA. It is suggested that the rate of chlorophyll synthesis in the greening cells is limited by the rate of formation of ALA. The stimulation of formation of carotenoids as well as chlorophyll may indicate that the cells have a mechanism for ensuring that the rate of carotenoid synthesis does not fall below a certain proportion of the rate of chlorophyll synthesis.A nomogram has been devised from which the concentrations of chlorophylls a and b, and total chlorophyll can be read off once the absorbances of an 80% acetone extract at 663 and 645 m have been determined.  相似文献
