Endemische Phytoassoziationen aus den Rumänischen Karpaten

The importance of endemic species for plant communities in the Roumanian Carpathians Mts. has been studied and discussed. Associations of the classAsplenietea trichomanis endemic in the South Carpathians were surveyed; they were classified into some endemic alliances (Gypsophilion petraeae, Micromerion pulegii, andSilenion lerchenfeldianae). Their locus classicus, nomenclatoric type and present distribution were also given.     

Human lymphoblastoid cell lines secreting antibodies with restricted HLA specificity

Peripheral B lymphocytes obtained from three healthy individuals who had been immunized against peripheral blood lymphocytes from appropriate HLA-incompatible donors were transformed by the use of Epstein-Barr virus. The transformed blastoid B cells were repeatedly subcultured by means of cluster picking, and the HLA antibody-producing cultures were identified by testing the culture supernatants by means of the cytotoxicity assay, using the corresponding donor cells. Thus far, four cell lines that secrete cytotoxic HLA antibodies (MP1, 3, 4, and 5) have been established. Specific immunoabsorption experiments revealed that the antibody activity is carried by lambda-type IgM for MP1, by kappa-type IgM for MP3 and MP5, and by both for MP4. Specificity analysis of a panel of HLA-pretyped cells indicated that MP1 detects DQw2, whereas MP5 recognizes B7. The specificity of MP3 was similar to a DQ specificity termed DC5 (probably equivalent to TA10) but not the same. Inhibitors of the cleavage of aclacinomycins

Summary The reductive cleavage of the aclacinomycins A (I), Y (II), and B (III) by intact mycelia or subcellular fractions of the producer strain S. spec. AM 33352/F43 is suppressed in the presence of uncouplers, complex-forming agents, detergents, and some metal anions such as chromate. Increased concentration of the latter in complete cultures caused rearrangement of I to III.     

Xylose catabolism by a mutant ofStreptomyces chrysomallus altered in the regulation of D-glucose isomerase

Summary A mutant ofS. chrysomallus with a D-glucose isomerase inducible by D-glucose or its catabolites was characterized. In contrast to the wild-type strain it showed a decreased catabolite repression by D-glucose of D-xylose consumption and a constitutive pentose phosphate pathway as well. A hypothesis concerning altered induction pattern of its D-glucose isomerase is discussed.     

Reactive extraction of penicillin G in a pilot plant Karr-column

Summary Penicillin G was extracted from a model medium with a secondary amine (Amberlite LA-2) as carrier in n-butylacetate as solvent in a 7.6 m high pilot plant Karr-column at different stroke frequencies, throughput of the phases, concentrations of Penicillin G and carrier and ratios of the throughputs of the aqueous and organic phases. Reactive extraction of penicillin G in a pilot plant Karr-column II. Fermentation broths

Summary Penicillin G was extracted from mycelfree fermentation broths by means of the carrier (Amberlite LA-2) in n-butylacetate at pH 5 in a 7.6 m high pilot plant Karr-column with degrees of extraction E=98–99% and penicillin enrichments up to 3. The reextraction was carried out with phosphate buffer at pH-values above 7.5 with degree of extractions E=86–88% and penicillin enrichments up to 3. The penicillin and carrier losses were negligible. The influence of the process variables on the extraction degree was investigated. The penicillin extraction of the model medium and the fermentation broths were compared. Dietary shifts,niche relationships and reproductive output of coexisting Kestrels and Long-eared Owls

Summary Food samples of breeding Kestrels (Falco tinnunculus) and Long-eared Owls (Asio otus) were collected in the peak and low phase of their preferred prey (Microtus voles) in western Finland. Diets of pairs that bred as neighbours (1 km) with interspecifics were compared with those of non-neighbours. In both species, neighbouring pairs fed less on Microtus voles and more on alternative prey than did non-neighbours. Competition theory predicts that diet overlap should be lower during prey shortage and that diet similarity should be especially reduced in neighbouring pairs. Observations were consistent with expectations: diet similarity was lower in the low vole years and neighbouring pairs showed less diet overlap that non-neighbours. Differences in habitat composition and prey availability at the sample sites should not confuse the results. In addition to the high diet similarity, hunting habitats and nest sites of the species overlapped almost completely; they only showed clear temporal segregation in hunting. Probably because of food competition, the neighbouring pairs of both species produced significantly fewer young than the non-neighbours. These results contrast with the view that the diet composition and dietary shift of rodent-feeding predatory birds can be interpreted in terms of simple opportunistic foraging. In the breeding season, interspecific competition for food seems to be an important factor that affects the niches of these species, especially in northern areas, where the seasonal low phase of voles in spring and the number of alternative prey are lower than in more southern areas.
