1. Larval amphibians are a dominant consumer in many freshwater systems, yet limited data on energy transfers between aquatic food resources and larvae and between metamorphosed larvae and adjacent habitats preclude an accurate assessment of their roles as links between aquatic and terrestrial food webs.
2. During 2003–04, we derived prey-specific assimilation efficiencies, analysed stomach contents, and intensively sampled ambystomatid salamander assemblages in four ponds to quantify the trophic basis of larval production. Using estimates of the contribution of each prey taxon to larval production, we constructed quantitative food webs and assessed variation in pathways of energy flow associated with emergences.
3. Overall, metamorphosed salamanders exported 3–8% of total prey production, required to account for total salamander production, to adjacent forest. Aquatic insects, zooplankton and amphibian prey were most important to energy flow associated with emergence; amounts of larval production attributed to each of these prey types shifted during development and varied among salamander taxa.
4. The majority of variation in the trophic basis of production among species was attributed to copepods (Cyclopidae) and three families of aquatic insects (Chironomidae, Chaoboridae and Culicidae). Dominant prey types contributing to the production of metamorphosed salamanders varied among ponds, representing different pathways for energy transfers between aquatic resources and forest habitats. These findings further our understanding of the ecological roles of amphibians and thus the consequences of amphibian declines and extinctions.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of elevated CO2 and soil N availability on the growth of arbuscular mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal fungi, and on the number of mycophagous soil microarthropods associated with the roots of Populus tremuloides . CO2 concentration did not significantly affect percentage infection of Populus roots by mycorrhizal or non-mycorrhizal fungi. However, the extra-radical hyphal network was altered both qualitatively and quantitatively, and there was a strong interaction between CO2 and soil N availability. Under N-poor soil conditions, elevated CO2 stimulated hyphal length by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, but depressed growth by non-mycorrhizal fungi. There was no CO2 effect at high N availability. High N availability stimulated growth by opportunistic saprobic/pathogenic fungi. Soil mites were not affected by any treatment, but collembolan numbers were positively correlated with the increase in non-mycorrhizal fungi. Results indicate a strong interaction between CO2 concentration and soil N availability on mycorrhizal functioning and on fungal-based soil food webs.  相似文献

Soil temperature can influence the functioning of roots in many ways. If soil moisture and nutrient availability are adequate, rates of root length extension and root mortality increase with increasing soil temperature, at least up to an optimal temperature for root growth, which seems to vary among taxa. Root growth and root mortality are highly seasonal in perennial plants, with a flush of growth in spring and significant mortality in the fall. At present we do not understand whether root growth phenology responds to the same temperature cues that are known to control shoot growth. We also do not understand whether the flush of root growth in the spring depends on the utilization of stored nonstructural carbohydrates, or if it is fueled by current photosynthate. Root respiration increases exponentially with temperature, but Q 10 values range widely from c . 1.5 to > 3.0. Significant questions yet to be resolved are: whether rates of root respiration acclimate to soil temperature, and what mechanisms control acclimation if it occurs. Limited data suggest that fine roots depend heavily on the import of new carbon (C) from the canopy during the growing season. We hypothesize that root growth and root respiration are tightly linked to whole-canopy assimilation through complex source–sink relationships within the plant. Our understanding of how the whole plant responds to dynamic changes in soil temperature, moisture and nutrient availability is poor, even though it is well known that multiple growth-limiting resources change simultaneously through time during a typical growing season. We review the interactions between soil temperature and other growth-limiting factors to illustrate how simple generalizations about temperature and root functioning can be misleading.  相似文献

The genus Hexabathynella (Crustacea, Malacostraca, Bathynellacea) is revised in the sense of the phylogenetic systematics and four new species are described from South Africa ( H. monoaethetasca sp. nov. and H. africana sp. nov. ) and America ( H. schrieveri sp. nov. and H. virginiae sp. nov. ). A comparative analysis of all observable outer structures distributed in 18 known and four new species resulted in a re-evaluation of 18 characters and character states. The phylogenetic analysis using the program PAUP yielded one most-parsimonious tree, which suggests the grouping of ( H. decora (( H. halophila  +  H. aotearoae ) + ( H. pauliani ( H. monoaethetasca  + H. africana )))) + ( H. knoepffleri ( H. nicoleiana ( H. hebrica , H. tenera , H. longiappendiculata , H. breviappendiculata , H. nestica ) +  H. virginiae (( H. minuta ( H. valdecasasi + H. otayana )) + ( H. hessleri + H. muliebris ))) +  H. paranaensis ( H. szidati + H. schrieveri )). The tree is 57 steps long and has a consistency index of 0.6140, a retention index of 0.7982 and a rescaled consistency index of 0.4901. The result does not agree with the previous analyses on the genus. Observations and experiments on the behaviour of shore rocklings have shown that the modified and vibratile anterior dorsal fin can be involved in the detection of food but is not essential to foraging by the fish. The epidermis of the vibratile fin rays contains numerous chemosensory cells, of similar cytology in the two species studied. These chemosensory cells are compared with the gustatory cells of the taste buds borne on other fin rays. Synaptic modifications in both cases consist of densities on the apposed membranes, with a dense layer under the membrane of the neurite more distinct than that in the cell. Vesicles are not a feature of these synapses, although some of the sensory cell bases are vesicular. Denervation experiments have shown that the chemosensory cells of the vibratile rays are supplied by a facial nerve component. After denervation a small proportion of the sensory cells were found to have an association with spinal nerve fibres. The present status of solitary chemosensory cells in fishes is discussed.  相似文献

1. Research in forest and grassland ecosystems indicates that terrestrial invertebrates that fall into streams can be an important prey resource for fish, providing about 50% of their annual energy and having strong effects on growth and abundance. However, the indirect effects of land uses like cattle grazing on this important prey subsidy for stream salmonids are unclear. 2. During summer 2007, we compared the effects of three commonly used grazing systems on terrestrial invertebrate inputs to streams in northern Colorado and their use by trout. Cattle graze individual pastures for about 120 days under traditional season‐long grazing (SLG), about 35–45 days under simple rotational grazing and 10–20 days under intensive rotational grazing in this region. We also compared these effects to a fourth group of sites grazed only by wildlife (i.e. no livestock use). 3. Overall, rotational grazing management (either simple or intensive), resulted in more riparian vegetation, greater inputs of terrestrial invertebrates, greater biomass of terrestrial invertebrate prey in trout diets, a higher input compared to trout metabolic demand and more trout biomass than SLG. However, these differences were frequently not statistically significant owing to high variability, especially for trout diets and biomass. 4. Despite the inherent variability, riparian vegetation and terrestrial invertebrates entering streams and in trout diets at sites managed for rotational grazing were similar to sites managed for wildlife grazing only. 5. These results indicate that rotational grazing systems can be effective for maintaining levels of terrestrial invertebrate subsidies to streams necessary to support robust trout populations. However, factors influencing the effect of riparian grazing on stream subsidies are both spatially variable and complex, owing to differences in microclimate, invertebrate and plant populations and the efforts of ranchers to tailor grazing systems to specific riparian pastures.  相似文献

The morphology and arrangement of the teeth in 13 sympatric species of the genus Blennius were investigated by SEM. All the species were collected in the upper littoral of the Northern Adriatic near Rovinj (Yugoslavia) and represent the total species inventory of the genus Blennius in this area. After analysing the content and length of the intestine, four groups with different feeding habits could be distinguished to which the morphological adaptations of the teeth could be correlated. There is a non-selective omnivorous group of Aufwuchs-grazer which take the inhabiting vagilfauna {Blennius gattorugine, B. incognitas, B. tentacularis ), a herbivorous group ( B. sanguinolentus, B. sphynx, B. canevae ), a carnivorous group ( B. trigloides, B. dalmatinus, B. rouxi ), and a linking group between omnivorous grazers and carnivores (B. adriaticus, B. pavo, B. nigriceps). B. galerita shows a preponderance of comblike teeth and feeds exclusively scraping microscopic algae from the rocky substrate. The morphology and position of the caniniforms vary greatly within the investigated species. The dentition on the vomer is lacking in five species and seems of no consequence in the uptake of food.  相似文献
