Male characters that are used for male−male combat are often developed and exaggerated, whereas female equivalent characters are vestigial or vanished. In order to assess whether the characters common to both sexes share the same phenotypic variability due to common genetic architecture, we compared males and females of the stag beetle Prosopocoilus inclinatus using recently developed geometric morphometric methods. Elliptic Fourier analysis was used to compare shape variation between male characters (including exaggerated mandibles) and developmentally homologous female characters. A significant positive correlation was found between the size or between the weight of different body parts in both sexes, but a conspicuous difference was detected in the frequency distribution of the weight of all the body parts. Elliptic Fourier analysis demonstrated that there was marked discontinuous variation in mandibles in males, whereas such a discontinuity was not clear in females. The shape of a character in males exhibited some similarity with that of other characters, but this was not found in females. In a character, growth trajectory of shape was significantly affected by both size and weight in males, whereas size and shape tended to vary independently in female characters. These results support the hypothesis that a large sexual dimorphism in variation in shape is due to alleles accumulating in tight linkage with a sex-determining gene.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 81 , 219–233  相似文献

Mating frequency of Vespa analis queens and the genetic relatedness of their workers was analyzed by DNA microsatellite genotyping. Of 20 colonies studied, 18 had a queen inseminated by a single male and two had queens each inseminated by two males. The estimated effective number of matings was 1.05 ± 0.037 (mean ± SE), with 75–85% of the offspring of the two multiply mated queens sired by a single male. The pedigree relatedness between nestmate workers averaged over the 20 colonies was estimated to be 0.74 ± 0.008, almost identical to the predicted value of 0.75 for colonies headed by a singly mated queen. Multiple matrilines; that is, the presence of workers not related to the current queens, were detected in six colonies, suggesting that queen replacement occurred via usurpation of the founding queens in these six colonies. These results demonstrate that the kin structure of V. analis is similar to that reported in other vespid species.  相似文献

Recent comparative studies have revealed that the rapid diversity of genitalia is closely related to sexual selection and that genital development interacts with the development of different body parts. Hypotheses about developmental stability due to selection to genital parts were tested by estimating allometric relations in a sexually dimorphic stag beetle Prosopocoilus inclinatus . All genital parts of males scaled to body size with a slope of less than 1 and all but the median lobe (male intromittent organ) showed smaller variability than other body parts. This supported the 'one-size-fits-all' hypothesis, which suggests broad copulation opportunity by males of any size with females within a population. Nevertheless, we found large variation among different genital parts in coefficients of variation and in values of the switch point where the allometric relations varied significantly. These results strongly support the view that developmental trajectories of genital traits are not necessarily integrated. Among the genitalic traits, male intromittent organ and female genitalia exhibited large variability, suggesting a high responsiveness to the selective regimes and physical interaction during copulation. Using the magnetic particles method, we isolated six polymorphic microsatellite loci from the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), which feeds on a wide range of legume species. The isolated loci were polymorphic, with three to six alleles in 40 aphids. Expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.12 to 0.65. These loci can be used to quantify clonal diversity and compare genetic population structure between sexual and asexual populations.  相似文献

1. We examined effects of water temperature on the community structure of a three trophic level food chain (predatory fish, herbivorous caddisfly larvae and periphyton) in boreal streams. We used laboratory experiments to examine (i) the effects of water temperature on feeding activities of fish and caddisfly larvae and on periphyton productivity, to evaluate the thermal effects on each trophic level (species‐level experiment), and (ii) the effects of water temperature on predation pressure of fish on abundance of the lower trophic levels, to evaluate how temperature affects top‐down control by fish (community‐level experiment). 2. In the species‐level experiment, feeding activity of fish was high at 12 °C, which coincides with the mean summer temperature in forested streams of Hokkaido, Japan, but was depressed at 3 °C, which coincides with the mean winter temperature, and also above 18 °C, which coincides with the near maximum summer temperatures. Periphyton productivity increased over the range of water temperatures. 3. In the community‐level experiments, a top‐down effect of fish on the abundance of caddisfly larvae and periphyton was clear at 12 °C. This effect was not observed at 3 and 21 °C because of low predation pressure of fish at these temperatures. 4. These experiments revealed that trophic cascading effects may vary with temperature even in the presence of abundant predators. Physiological depression of predators because of thermal stress can alter top‐down control and lead to changes in community structure. 5. We suggest that thermal habitat alteration can change food web structure via combinations of direct and indirect trophic interactions.  相似文献

Newly synthetized cyloplasmic proteins of Douglas fir cotyledon culture capable of initiating adventitious bud formation (bud culture) were compared with those of morphologically distinct types of cultures, bud-callus culture (some adventitious buds with callus), and callus culture (no adventitious buds; only callus). SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic profiles of double labeled (14C-and 3H-) proteins showed that a persistent increase of low molecular weight proteins (16,000 to 20,000 daltons) was associated with bud culture. Similar electrophoretic profiles of proteins extracted in the absence and in the presence of protease inhibitor (4-mcthylbenzene sulfonyl fluoride) or phenolic compounds absorbents (Dowex I-X8 and polyvinylpolypyrolidine) were obtained indicating that the detected low molecular weights of these proteins represented the real monomeric state of these molecules.  相似文献

A cDNA clone encoding an isoform of the plasma membrane H+-ATPase was isolated from Nicotiana tabacum. The steady-state plasma membrane H+-ATPase message levels were the same in unadapted tobacco cells and tobacco cells adapted to 428 mol m−3 NaCl. When cells adapted to 428 mol m−3 NaCl maintained in the absence of NaCl (deadapted) for an excess of 100 passages were exposed to 400 mol m−3 NaCl for 24 h, there was an increased accumulation of plasma membrane H+-ATPase message. The NaCl responsiveness of the deadapted cells was dependent upon the growth cycle stage. Alterations in the levels of plasma membrane FT-ATPase message during the growth cycle support a role for the H+-ATPase in cell growth. These results document the induction by NaCl of plasma membrane FT-ATPase message accumulation in tobacco cells, and suggest that enhanced expression of the plasma membrane FT-ATPase has a role in the short term response of cells of NaCl, but is not necessarily involved in long-term adaptation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. We found Encephalitozoon -like organisms in an in vitro culture of a human liver lesion which was due to larval Echinococcus multilocularis. The organisms developed in the same fashion as an Encephalitozoon cunculi. The spores that developed in parasitophorous vacuoles were 2.0–2.6 × 1.1–1.5 μm: each contained a single nucleus and 4–5 polar tubule coils, closely resembling E. cuniculi in its ultrastructure. Mature spores were collected from the supernatants by the use of Percoll centrifugation resulting in the banding of the spores on continuous gradients. We prepared three sorts of spores which were different in buoyant density in 0.15 M NaCl: 1.05–1.07 g/ml spores, 1.12 g/ml spores, and spores of over 1.14 g/ml. Polyclonal antibodies to a pool of each spore preparation were produced in a rabbit and applied to the detection of microsporidian antigen in situ. The histoimmunoperoxidase (HIP) procedure was used to detect the microsporidian antigen in echinococcal liver lesions from patients with alveolar hydatid disease (AHD). Ten echinococcal liver lesions from different AHD patients were examined and four were found to be positive in the HIP test. The Percoll-separated spores were also used as an antigen to detect for antibodies in the sera from the patients with AHD by Western blotting. Antibodies were detected in 62 (52%) of the 119 AHD patients and in only 8 (5%) of the 159 normal healthy individuals.  相似文献

The distribution of thermoreceptor systems that initiate step-up and step-down thermophobic responses in bisected cells of Blepharisma was examined. Anterior cell fragments responded by ciliary reversal to a step-down in temperature and by repression of spontaneous ciliary reversal to a step-up. Posterior fragments responded by ciliary reversal to a step-up in thermal stimulation and by repression of spontaneous ciliary reversal in response to step-down stimulation. Results indicate that two kinds of thermoreceptor systems exist in the anterior half of each cell; one is responsible for ciliary reversal induced by step-down stimulation, and the other is responsible for repression of the ciliary reversal caused by step-up thermal stimulation. Likewise, there are also two kinds of thermoreceptor systems in the posterior half of the cell; one is responsible for ciliary reversal in response to a step-up in temperature, and the other is responsible for the repression of ciliary reversal on a step-down in thermal stimulation. Below about 27°C, intact cells showed ciliary reversal only when a step-down in thermal stimulation occurred, while above about 27°C cells only responded to a step-up in thermal stimulation. At about 27°C there was a switch in the dominant response from the anterior to the posterior half of an individual cell.  相似文献

The C20 diterpenoid compound retinal is the chromophore of thevisual pigments the rhodopsins, and the pigments present inHalobacterium halobium, namely, bacteriorhodopsin (proton pump),halorhodopsin (chloride pump), and the sensory rhodopsins (phototaxisreceptor). In all cases, they are bound covalently to the receptorprotein by a protonated Schiff base. However, in rhodopsins,the retinal is the 11-cis isomer, whereas in H. halobium pigmentsit is the all-trans isomer. Why did Nature choose retinal asthe chromophore, and why 11-cis in some cases and all-transin other cases? Also why is the chromophore a protonated Schiffbase?
