Few data are available to validate the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) emission factors for indirect emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O). In particular the N2O emissions resulting from nitrogen leaching and the associated groundwater and surface drainage (EF5-g) are particularly poorly characterized. In situ push–pull methods have been used to identify the fate of NO3 in the groundwater. In this study, we adapted a previously published in situ denitrification push–pull method to examine the fate of 15N2O introduced into the subsoil–groundwater matrix. Enriched 15N2O was manufactured, added to groundwater via a closed system in the laboratory, and then introduced into the groundwater–subsoil matrix in an upland-marsh transition zone of a salt marsh and a forested alluvial riparian zone. Conservative tracers (SF6 and Br) and 15N2O were injected into the groundwater and left for 1–4 h after which the groundwater was sampled. Added 15N2O behaved in a conservative manner at one site while the other site showed variability with some injections showing significant consumption (3–8 μg N2O-15N kg−1 soil day−1) of 15N2O. Our results show that the fate and dynamics of N2O in groundwater are complex and variable and that these dynamics should be considered in the development of improved IPCC inventory calculations.  相似文献

Understanding mammalian evolution using Bayesian phylogenetic inference   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
1. Phylogenetic trees are critical in addressing evolutionary hypotheses; however, the reconstruction of a phylogeny is no easy task. This process has recently been made less arduous by using a Bayesian statistical approach. This method offers the advantage that one can determine the probability of some hypothesis (i.e. a phylogeny), conditional on the observed data (i.e. nucleotide sequences). 2. By reconstructing phylogenies using Bayes’ theorem in combination with Markov chain Monte Carlo, phylogeneticists are able to test hypotheses more quickly compared with using standard methods such as neighbour-joining, maximum likelihood or parsimony. Critics of the Bayesian approach suggest that it is not a panacea, and argue that the prior probability is too subjective and the resulting posterior probability is too liberal compared with maximum likelihood. 3. These issues are currently debated in the arena of mammalian evolution. Recently, proponents and opponents of the Bayesian approach have constructed the mammalian phylogeny using different methods under different conditions and with a variety of parameters. These analyses showed the robustness (or lack of) of the Bayesian approach. In the end, consensus suggests that Bayesian methods are robust and give essentially the same answer as maximum likelihood methods but in less time. 4. Approaches based on fossils and molecules typically agree on ordinal-level relationships among mammals but not on higher-level relationships, as Bayesian analyses recognize the African radiation, Afrotheria, and the two Laurasian radiations, Laurasiatheria and Euarchontoglires, whereas fossils did not predict Afrotheria.  相似文献

During early August to late September 1998 we examined seed dispersal in the tree species Jatropha standleyi (widespread) and J. chamelensis (endemic; Euphorbiaceae) at the Estacion de Biologia Chamela, Jalisco, Mexico. Using general linear models, we found that seed removal from beneath the parental canopy did not differ between the two species and that seed removal was correlated with both seed availability on the ground and rodent predation. We inferred that seed removal was largely mediated by rodents and determined that if a seed was not removed within 4d (approx. 16% chance), it was highly unlikely to be removed at all (approx. 3.5% chance) for both species. We note that although differences in patterns of seed removal may not explain the observed differences in range size, differences between the two species in seed crop size arc similar to patterns found in other endemic/widespread species pairs.  相似文献

Alfalfa and orchard grass crops were grown at ambient and twice ambient carbon dioxide concentrations in field plots for several years in Beltsville, MD, using semi-open chambers. Canopy conductances throughout many days were determined from water vapour exchange measurements, and indicated significant reductions in canopy conductance to water vapour at elevated carbon dioxide in both species. However, recognizing that the artificial ventilation in the chambers made direct comparisons of evapotranspiration rates questionable, we used a soil–vegetation–atmosphere model to determine what field-scale evapotranspiration rates would have been with natural ventilation. Unlike the 'omega' approach, the model used allowed feedbacks between the canopy and the atmosphere, such that, for example, canopy conductance responses affected profiles of temperature and water vapour. Simulations indicated that although canopy conductances were lower at elevated carbon dioxide by as much as 20% in alfalfa and 60% in orchard grass, evapotranspiration rates never differed by more than 3% in alfalfa or 8% in orchard grass. Daily totals of evapotranspiration were only 1–2% lower at elevated carbon dioxide in alfalfa, and 2–5% lower in orchard grass. The results are partly explained by the fact that aerodynamic conductances to water vapour were generally smaller than the stomatal conductance, and also by canopy–atmosphere feedback processes which largely compensated for the lower conductance at elevated carbon dioxide by increasing the gradient for evaporation.  相似文献

Abstract The wheat germ translation system was programmed with soluble RNA extracted from foliar abscission zones of Phaseolus vulgaris, These extracts were taken at various times after the induction of abscission. A translation product with a molecular weight of 42 kilodalton (kD) was only present after this treatment, though three other species 32, 27 and 17 kD increased substantially. The isozyme of cellulase with a pi of 9.5 could not be conclusively identified amongst the products though the 32 kD protein is probably chitinase. Comparison of the abscission zone translatable RNA with that from adjacent petiole and stem tissues showed the 17 kD protein developed in all these location. The 42, 32 and 27 kD bands were found predominantly in the zone and petiole.  相似文献

Paired comparison and triangle tests were used to contrast the effects of ingestion and expectoration in two distinct systems: added salt in kidney beans and nonfat milk with added milkfat. Probit analysis was used to determine panel difference thresholds. Analysis of variance was used to evaluate significant differences between the methods of sampling and for effects of fatigue due to ingestion of the sample. No significant differences between the two methods of sampling were found for either thresholds or fatigue effects.  相似文献
