The yucca moths ( Tegeticula and Parategeticula ; Lepidoptera, Prodoxidae) are well known for their obligate relationship as exclusive pollinators of yuccas. Revisionary work in recent years has revealed far higher species diversity than historically recognized, increasing the number of described species from four to 20. Based on field surveys in Mexico and examination of collections, we describe five additional species: T. californica Pellmyr sp. nov. , T. tehuacana Pellmyr & Balcázar-Lara sp. nov. , T. tambasi Pellmyr & Balcázar-Lara sp. nov., T. baja Pellmyr & Balcázar-Lara sp. nov. and P. ecdysiastica Pellmyr & Balcázar-Lara sp. nov . Tegeticula treculeanella Pellmyr is identified as a junior synonym of T. mexicana Bastida. A diagnostic key to the adults of all species of the T. yuccasella complex is provided. A phylogeny based on a 2104-bp segment of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in the cytochrome oxidase I and II region supported monophyly of the two pollinator genera, and strongly supported monophyly of the 17 recognized species of the T. yuccasella complex. Most relationships are well supported, but some relationships within a recent and rapidly diversified group of 11 taxa are less robust, and in one case conflicts with a whole-genome data set (amplified fragment length polymorphism, AFLP). The current mtDNA-based analyses, together with previously published AFLP data, provide a robust phylogenetic foundation for future studies of life-history evolution and host interactions in one of the classical models of coevolution and obligate mutualism.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 152 , 297–314.  相似文献

The seabuckthorn carpenter moth,Holcocerus hippophaecolus, which has a generation time of four years,is recently becoming one of the major pests of the seabuckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) in Inner Mongolia,Liaoning,Shanxi,Ningxia and Shaanxi of China (Hua et al.,1990).The larvae of the H.hippophaecolus mainly damage the stems and roots of the seabuckthorn, and the mature larvae pupate in the soil. The spatial distribution of the pupae was analyzed by using biostatistics and geostatistics in order to effectively control the insect and further study the spatial distribution of the population. Results show that most of the pupae (90%) had an eclosion time span from early June to the end of July. The sex ratio of the pupae was nearly 1:1 in the woodland samples. In addition,24.3% of the 971 trees investigated had pupae and it ranged from 0 to 4 per tree within a distance of 1.3 m from the base of the stem.90% of the pupae were aggregated within a distance of 1 m from the base of the stem. The pupae show intense spatial aggregation in the sampled woodland which had an 11.1 m spatial dependence and a 90.7% intensity in the local spatial continuity. Moreover, the population presented an intensive spotted distribution and many aggregated spots were found in the woodlands. As for the relationship between grid size and variogram of the pupae, the variations in the range, the intensity of local spatial continuity and the sill were all very low or non-existent when the grid size was 5 m,6 m or 7 m.Whereas, the value of the decisive coefficient was the biggest when the grid size was 5 m making it the ideal grid size.  相似文献

Multiphasic Uptake of Sulfate by Barley Roots   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Uptake of sulfate by excised barley roots increases upon their washing in aerated water or dilute CaCl2 solutions. Washing increases the values for Vmax and the sulfate concentrations required for transition between the lower phases, but the KM-values remain essentially constant. At low sulfate concentrations, phase transitions do not occur in the absence of calcium or other divalent cations. These ions are about equally effective in enhancing short-term sulfate uptake. Phase transitions were not principally altered by sulfhydryl or protein reagents. These concentration-dependent transitions appear unrelated to temperature-dependent phase transitions as evidenced by similar multiphasic patterns at low and high temperature.  相似文献

Evolutionary transitions to dim-light foraging (predawn matinal, crepuscular, nocturnal) have occurred repeatedly in bees, and may be associated with an escape from enemies or competitors. To date, however, little information has been available to test these hypotheses. Here we provide the first detailed information on the nesting behaviour of two species of Neotropical, nocturnal sweat bees, Megalopta genalis and M. ecuadoria (Hymenoptera: Halictidae). Females are facultatively social or solitary, and construct nests in dead wood. Nocturnal foraging behaviour is bimodal. Bees began foraging after sunset (∼18:30 h) and ceased foraging approximately 1 h later even though nocturnal flowers with pollen were still abundant; a second foraging bout occurred in the predawn morning, which began at ∼04:45 h and ended around sunrise (∼06:15 h) when diurnal-blooming flowers were abundant. Bees are capable of controlled flight in full light. They utilized pollen from both canopy and understory plant species, which have diurnal or nocturnal pollen anthesis. Megalopta nests are attacked by generalist predators such as ants, as well as the endoparasitic fly Melaloncha sp. nov. (Phoridae), the beetle Macrosaigon gracilis (Rhipophoridae), the parasitic wasp Lophostigma cincta (Mutillidae), and the brood parasite Megalopta byroni (Halictidae). Overall nest survivorship rates were comparable to those for diurnal relatives, but rates of cell parasitism for Megalopta (< < 5%) were substantially lower than they are for day-flying relatives, offering some support for the hypothesis that the evolution of nocturnal behaviour enables escape from natural enemies.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 83 , 377–387.  相似文献

1. Anthropogenic pressures have produced heterogeneous landscapes expected to influence diversity differently across trophic levels and spatial scales. 2. We tested how activity density and species richness of carabid trophic groups responded to local habitat and landscape structure (forest percentage cover and habitat richness) in 48 landscape parcels (1 km2) across eight European countries. 3. Local habitat affected activity density, but not species richness, of both trophic groups. Activity densities were greater in rotational cropping compared with other habitats; phytophage densities were also greater in grassland than forest habitats. 4. Controlling for country and habitat effects, we found general trophic group responses to landscape structure. Activity densities of phytophages were positively correlated, and zoophages uncorrelated, with increasing habitat richness. This differential functional group response to landscape structure was consistent across Europe, indicated by a lack of a country × habitat richness interaction. Species richness was unaffected by landscape structure. 5. Phytophage sensitivity to landscape structure may arise from relative dependency on seed from ruderal plants. This trophic adaptation, rare in Carabidae, leads to lower phytophage numbers, increasing vulnerability to demographic and stochastic processes that the greater abundance, species richness, and broader diet of the zoophage group may insure against.  相似文献

1. Submerged macrophyte and phytoplankton components of eutrophic, shallow lakes have frequently undergone dynamic changes in composition and abundance with important consequences for lake functioning and stability. However, because of a paucity of long‐term survey data, we know little regarding the nature, direction and sequencing of such changes over decadal–centennial or longer timescales. 2. To circumvent this problem, we analysed multiple (n = 5) chronologically correlated sediment cores for plant macro‐remains and a single core for pollen and diatoms from one small, shallow, English lake (Felbrigg Hall Lake, Norfolk, U.K.), documenting 250 years of change to macrophyte and algal communities. 3. All five cores showed broadly similar stratigraphic changes in macrophyte remains with three distinct phases of macrophyte development: Myriophyllum–Chara–Potamogeton (c. pre‐1900), to Ceratophyllum–Chara–Potamogeton (c. 1900–1960) and finally to Zannichellia–Potamogeton (c. post‐1960). Macrophyte species richness declined from at least 10 species pre‐1900 to just four species at the present day. Additionally, in the final Zannichellia–Potamogeton phase, a directional shift between epi‐benthic and phytoplankton‐based primary production was indicated by the diatom data. 4. Based on macrophyte–seasonality relationships established for the region, concomitant with the final shift to Zannichellia–Potamogeton, we infer a reduction in the seasonal duration of plant dominance (plant‐covered period). Furthermore, we hypothesise that this change in species composition resulted in a situation whereby macrophyte populations were seasonally ‘sandwiched’ between two phytoplankton peaks in spring and late summer as observed in the contemporary lake. 5. We suggest that eutrophication‐induced reductions in macrophyte species richness, especially if the number of plant‐seasonal strategies is reduced, may constrict the plant growing season. In turn, this may render a shallow lake increasingly vulnerable to seasonal invasions of phytoplankton resulting in further species losses in the plant community. Thus, as part of a slow (over perhaps 10–100s of years) and self‐perpetuating process, macrophytes may be gradually pushed out by phytoplankton without the need for a perturbation as required in the alternative stable states model of plant loss.  相似文献

A common hypothesis for northern ecosystems is that low soil temperatures inhibit plant productivity. To address this hypothesis, we reviewed how separate components of ecosystem carbon (C) cycling varied along a soil temperature gradient for nine well-drained, relatively productive boreal black spruce ( Picea mariana Mill. [B.S.P.]) forests in Alaska, USA, and Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Canada. Annual soil temperature [expressed as soil summed degree days (SDD)] was positively correlated with aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP), while negatively correlated with total belowground carbon flux (TBCF). The partitioning of C to ANPP at the expense of root processes represented a nearly 1 : 1 tradeoff across the soil temperature gradient, which implied that the amount of C cycling through these black spruce ecosystems was relatively insensitive to variation in SDD. Moreover, the rate at which C accumulated in the ecosystem since the last stand replacing fire was unrelated to SDD, but SDD was positively correlated to the ratio of spruce-biomass : forest-floor-mass. Thus, plant partitioning of C and the distribution of ecosystem C were apparently affected by soil temperature, although across regions, precipitation co-varied with soil temperature. These two factors likely correlated with one another because of precipitation's influence on soil heat balance, suggesting that a soil temperature–precipitation interaction could be responsible for the shifts in C allocation. Nonetheless, our results highlight that for this boreal ecosystem, ANPP and TBCF can be negatively correlated. In tropical and temperate forests, TBCF and ANPP have been reported as positively correlated, and our results may reflect the unique interactions between soil temperature, forest floor accumulation, rooting depth, and nutrient availability that characterize the black spruce forest type.  相似文献

We studied the effect of female behaviour on the dawn chorus of Willow Tits Parus montanus. Ten females were temporarily kept in their nest holes in order to delay their dawn emergence. Simultaneously, their mates' singing behaviour was measured. We compared the control dawn behaviour (during which the females emerged when they wanted) with that during the experimental delay. The dawn song by the males lasted longer when the females' emergences were delayed. Our results show that the duration of the dawn chorus is directly related to the female's behaviour. We suggest that at least one function of the dawn song is intrapair signalling, which is often linked to sperm competition.  相似文献

1. The influence of a wood ant, Formica aquilonia, on the defoliation of the white birch, Betula pubescens, and on its invertebrate community was studied in ant-exclusion experiments during two outbreaks, the decline phase of the autumnal moth, Epirrita autumnata, and the peak year of the birch aphid, Euceraphis punctipennis, not tended by ants. 2. The numbers of the wood ant and Symydobius oblongus, a tended aphid, in birch foliage showed a strong positive correlation, and the former decreased rapidly when the distance from the ant mound increased, confirming that there was a distance-related gradient in arboreal ant predation. There may have been a parallel reduction in soil amelioration by ants through nest construction and food gathering. 3. The application of a glue ring around the trunk excluded ants totally from the canopy, inhibiting predation but not fertilization. 4. Ant-exclusion resulted in a 90–95% reduction in the growth of tended aphid colonies by mid-season. 5. Outbreak populations of the autumnal moth and the birch aphid were reduced by 45–67% and 77%, respectively, in control trees and correlated negatively with ant numbers. 6. The total percentage of leaf area damaged by moth larvae was 34% lower in ant-foraged than in unforaged trees. 7. Neither the distance from the ant mound nor its interaction with the glue treatment had any effect on the herbivores or folivory, indicating that the possible soil-ameliorating effect was weaker than predation, which reduced herbivore numbers at every distance studied (4–20 m). 8. Predation by ants also affected the abundance of syrphid larvae, predatory on both aphids, the percentage parasitism by a wasp, Aleiodes testaceus, on the autumnal moth, and thereby (or directly) its age (size) distribution. The presence of ants had no influence on spider abundance. 9. It is concluded that predation rather than soil amelioration is likely to be the reason why the degree of folivory and, during serious outbreaks, the mortality of trees are lower in the vicinity of wood-ant mounds.  相似文献
