Zooplankton biomass in the Barents Sea was monitored during198897 using WP2 and MOCNESS plankton nets. These twosampling gears differ in their size and mode of operation. Theplankton samples were size fractionated into three categoriesand the dry weight per square metre was calculated. The smallestand the medium size fractions (< 2000 µm) representedmainly copepods, and the larger size fraction (> 2000 µm)consisted mainly of macrozooplankton such as krill and amphipods.WP2 biomass values were higher for the smallest size fraction,whereas the MOCNESS tended to give higher values for the largestsize fraction However, the total amount of zooplankton biomass(g m1) obtained by these two methods was not significantlydifferent. 相似文献

Complications in Alzheimer’s disease such as functional decline, weight loss, gait and balance disturbances and behavioral and psychological symptoms in dementia (BPSD) have a negative impact on quality of life. It is therefore important to identify these complications at an early stage. BPSD are major features of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. They represent half of admissions to special care units with, in order of frequency, agitation and agressivity. The non pharmacological approach must be implemented first and linked to a pharmacological approach. Weight loss is of complex physiopathology. It can be monitored by observation of the weight curve and use of the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA). Weight loss may be responsible for an increased risk of institutionalization and mortality. Gait and balance disturbances are also a prevalent complication of the illness and lead to an increased risk of falls and injuries. Neurological complications take the form of seizures and motor symptoms. Amongst these complications the burden of the caregiver must also be assessed. These complications and their consequences must be identified and, wherever possible, prevented with a specific care plan. 相似文献

Competent Bacillus subtilis cells were exposed to radioactive and density labeled donor DNA extracted from B. pumilus and B. licheniformis. The DNA from these strains hybridized with B. subtilis DNA in vitro at a rate of 24% and 11%, respectively. After entry the vast majority of heterologous DNA was found at the single-strand DNA position in CsCl gradients, and was gradually degraded during incubation. Much less donor DNA than expected from the hybridization values participated in the formation of the donorrecipient complex (DRC). By subjecting the heterologous DRC to sonication and alkaline CsCl gradient centrifugation, it was established that the DRC consisted of three components: (1) recipient DNA in which breakdown products of donor DNA were incorporated through DNA synthesis, (2) recipient DNA in which donor DNA was covalently integrated and (3) recipient DNA in which the donor moiety was not covalently integrated. 相似文献

EEG-biofeedback has been reported to reduce symptoms of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in several studies. However, these studies did not control for nonspecific effects of EEG-biofeedback and did not distinguish between participants who succeeded in influencing their own EEG activity and participants who did not. To overcome these methodological shortcomings, this study evaluated the effects of EEG-biofeedback in ASD in a randomized pretest–posttest control group design with blinded active comparator and six months follow-up. Thirty-eight participants were randomly allocated to the EEG-biofeedback, skin conductance (SC)-biofeedback or waiting list group. EEG- and SC-biofeedback sessions were similar and participants were blinded to the type of feedback they received. Assessments pre-treatment, post-treatment, and after 6 months included parent ratings of symptoms of ASD, executive function tasks, and 19-channel EEG recordings. Fifty-four percent of the participants significantly reduced delta and/or theta power during EEG-biofeedback sessions and were identified as EEG-regulators. In these EEG-regulators, no statistically significant reductions of symptoms of ASD were observed, but they showed significant improvement in cognitive flexibility as compared to participants who managed to regulate SC. EEG-biofeedback seems to be an applicable tool to regulate EEG activity and has specific effects on cognitive flexibility, but it did not result in significant reductions in symptoms of ASD. Remoxipride is a selective dopamine D2 receptor antagonist, and useful as a model compound in mechanism-based pharmacological investigations. To that end, studies in small animals with serial sampling over time are needed. For these small volume samples currently no suitable analytical methods are available. We propose analytical methods for the detection of low concentrations remoxipride in small sample volumes of plasma, brain homogenate, and brain microdialysate, using online solid phase extraction with liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. Method development, optimization and validation are described in terms of calibration curves, extraction yield, lower limit of quantification (LLOQ), precision, accuracy, inter-day- and intra-day variability. The 20 μl plasma samples showed an extraction yield of 76%, with a LLOQ of 0.5 ng/ml. For 0.6 ml brain homogenate samples the extraction yield was 45%, with a LLOQ of 1.8 ng/ml. The 20 μl brain microdialysate samples, without pre-treatment, had a LLOQ of 0.25 ng/ml. The precision and accuracy were well within the acceptable 15% range. Considering the small sample volumes, the high sensitivity and good reproducibility, the analytical methods are suitable for analyzing small sample volumes with low remoxipride concentrations. 相似文献

Inverted lipid micelles have been proposed, among other biological functions, to constitute the structural basis of the so-called tight junctions, a special cell cell contact found in epithelia and endothelial, which act as a barrier for the paracellular solute passage. As a model system for the opening and closing of this gate, we investigated the formation of the inverted hexagonal phase (HII phase) in lipid bilayer systems consisting of egg phosphatidylethanolamine (egg PE) and mixed egg PE/bovine brain phosphatidylserine (BBPS) membranes. The formation of the HII phase was modulated by Ca2+ ions, pH, basic amino acids and protamine. The lamellar-HII phase transition temperature TH of pure egg PE membranes at pH 7.0 was lowered with increasing Ca2+ concentration. This effect was attenuated by the presence of 50 mM lysine methyl ester. In the mixed lipid system, this effect was also observed, but even more pronounced. However this effect could be compensated for by raising the Ca2+ concentration from 2 to 10 mM. This was not observed in the pure PE system. In the absence of Ca2+, lysine methyl ester and protamine lowered TH in both monocomponent and mixed lipid systems, whereas lysine caused the opposite effect. The pH-dependence of mixed lipid systems, which were investigated up to a BBPS content of 20 mol%, clearly shows that increasing PS content stabilizes the lamellar phase even at low pH. The results obtained with model membranes are discussed with respect to biological implications of the lamellar-HII phase transition for the modulation of tight junction stability. 相似文献

Amino acid changes in the retina, vitreous, lens, iris-ciliary body and cornea of the rat eye were determined during postnatal growth. The amino acid concentrations of the ocular tissues showed varying profiles at various developmental stages. These results suggest a different timetable for development of each ocular tissue or indicate a synthesis of specific proteins in the postnatal period. Adult amino acid levels appeared to be fully reached on the 30th day after birth at the latest. Quantitatively the greatest changes were observed in taurine concentrations, which increased in all five ocular tissues during maturation. GABA changes paralleled those of taurine in the retina, whereas in the other ocular tissues GABA changes were very low. The greatest decrease in glutamic acid and aspartic acid concentration during postnatal development was in the lens, where these amino acids probably are needed for the synthesis of the lenticular proteins, the alpha-, beta-, and gamma-crystallines. 相似文献
