Immunoelectrophoretic approach to the metabolic regulation of glutamine synthetase in Rhodopseudomonas capsulata E1F1: role of glutamine

Anti-glutamine synthetase serum was raised in rabbits by injecting purified glutamine synthetase (GS) of the phototrophic bacterium Rhodopseudomonas capsulata E1F1. The antibodies were purified to monospecificity by immunoaffinity chromatography in GS-sepharose gel. These anti-GS antibodies were used to measure the antigen levels in crude extracts from bacteria, grown phototrophically with dinitrogen, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, glutamate, glutamine or alanine as nitrogen sources. The amount of GS detected by rocket immunoelectrophoresis was proportional to Mn²⁺-dependent transferase activity measured in the crude extracts. Addition of GS inhibitor l-methionine-d,l-sulfoximine (MSX) to the actively growing cells promoted increased antigen levels, that were not found in the presence of glutamine or chloramphenicol. The ammonia-induced decrease in GS relative levels was reverted by MSX. Dion tomasellii (Zamiaceae), a new species with two varieties from western Mexico

Dion tomasellii sp. nov. occurs with an interrupted distribution from Guerrero to central Sonora. It is characterized by falcate to subfalcate leaflets. The populations from Sonora and northern Sinaloa are segregated asD. tomasellii var.sonorense on the basis of their narrower and glaucous leaflets.     

Neuronal activity of the external oculomotor nucleus during saccadic eye movement in the waking cat

The activity of antidromically identified abducens nucleus motoneurons and inter-nuclear neurons has been recorded during saccadic eye movements in the alert cat. The activity of these neurons has been demonstrated to be the sum of a velocity component proportional to eye velocity plus a position component proportional to instantaneous eye position during the movement. Results are discussed in relation to proposed models about the generation of saccadic eye movements.     

Chlorophyll-protein and polypeptide composition of Mn-deficient sugar beet thylakoids

The chlorophyll-protein and polypeptide composition of manganese deficient and control sugar beet thylakoids was examined using three different detergent-electrophoresis systems. On a per chlorophyll basis, manganese deficiency reduced the amounts of CPa complex (separated by sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS)-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis), and CP 47 and CP 43 complexes (separated by octylglucoside/SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis) without decreasing the amounts of light harvesting complexes. Lithium dodecylsulfate/Triton X-100 polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed that manganese deficiency decreased several thylakoid polypeptides, including a chlorophyll b containing 30 kilodalton chlorophyll-protein complex, but did not decrease the amounts of 28 and 29 kilodalton light-harvesting chlorophyll b-containing polypeptides.     

Isolation of yeast with killer activity and its breeding with an industrial baking strain by protoplast fusion

Summary Wild strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were isolated from dairy products, bakery goods, fresh fruit and vegetables, and tested for killer activity. Four isolates out of 238 strains possessed killer activity. The best of these was converted to the petite form and hybridized with an industrial strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae by protoplast fusion. Thirty-eight out of 104 isolates had killer activity, and some of these had good dough-raising activity as well.

Summary An isochromosome of 15(q12) was found in a mentally retarded patient with behaviour disorders which included hyperactivity, short attention span, aggression, and autistic behaviour. There were only minor physical anomalies; he did not have the Prader-Willi syndrome.     

Stability of plasmids R1-19 and R100 in hyper-recombinant Escherichia coli strains and in Salmonella typhimurium strains.

Plasmids R1-19 and R100 dissociate in hyper-recominant Escherichia coli strains in a way that is similar to but slower than dissociation in Salmonella typhimurium. The results presented suggest that the molecular mechanism for plasmid dissociation in hyper-recombinant E. coli strains is different than that in S. typhimurium strains.     

Monoclonal antibodies to neurospora adenylate cyclase

A monoclonal antibody against $\text{Neurospora}$ soluble adenylate cyclase was obtained. The antibody inhibits cyclase activities from several lower eucaryotic organisms but not activities associated to testicular cytosol or turkey erythrocyte membranes.
