General ecophenotypic patterns, of particular interest when they apply to all, or most, taxa of the group concerned, can never be demonstrated until after monophyletic taxa have been recognized, that is, until after the initial stages of phylogeny construction have been carried out. In criticizing certain dalmanellid phylogenies, and based in large part on a study of five 'species subgroups'. Hurst & Watkins (1978; Geologica et Palaeontologica 12 ) postulate ecophenotypic patterns for Isorthis , and Hurst (1978; Palaeontology 21 ) postulates general patterns of ecophenotypic variation for dalmanellid brachiopods. These patterns may be invalid for four reasons: (1) Univariate and 'bivariate' statistical analysis of the samples used to define the five subgroups reveals no significant differences between subgroups, or vertical trends, for the very morphological characters claimed to exhibit the ecophenotypic patterns; (2) Hurst & Watkins' discriminant function analysis contains procedural errors and its results are ambiguous; (3) several of the five subgroups represent mixtures of unrelated taxa; (4) in recognizing the alleged patterns, Hurst & Watkins ignored contrary evidence from many taxa (and from many dalmanellid studies). □ Brachiopoda, Dalmanellidae, Silurian, ecology, evolution, systematics.  相似文献

THE ORIGINS OF ADAPTIVE INTERSPECIFIC TERRITORIALISM   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
1. In order to understand fully the evolution of a behavioural trait one must not only consider whether it is adaptive in its present environment but also whether it originated as an adaptation to existing selective forces or as a fortuitous consequence of selection for a different role in other environments (i.e., as a pre-adaptation) or of selection for different traits (e.g., as a pleiotropic effect). In this paper interspecific territorialism is examined in species of humming-birds, sun-birds, tropical reef fishes, stingless bees, stomatopods, crayfish, and limpets as a means of determining its adaptiveness and its origins. 2. Humming-birds form complex assemblages with species sorted out among the available resources. Dominant species establish feeding territories where flowers provide sufficient nectar. A few large, dominant species, usually uncommon, are marauders on others' territories. Subordinate species establish territories where flowers are more dispersed or produce less nectar, or they fly a circuit from nectar source to nectar source when flowers are even more dispersed, a foraging pattern called ‘traplining’, or they steal nectar from the territorial species by being inconspicuous while foraging. Two species, Amazilia saucerottei and Selasphorus sasin, subordinate in one-to-one encounters, are able to take over rich resources by establishing several small territories within a territory of a dominant and forcing it to forage elsewhere. 3. Among humming-birds, territorial individuals attacked not only subordinate competitors but marauding humming-birds and some insects, which stayed in the territory and foraged at will, and seemingly inappropriate targets, such as non-competitors. This suggests that the stimulus for aggression is ‘any flying organism near the food resources’, regardless of its appearance. The behaviour rather than the identity of the intruder is the stimulus. 4. Sun-birds resemble humming-birds to the extent that dominants establish territories on rich nectar sources and subordinates establish territories on less rich nectar sources or steal from the territories of dominants. The diversity of foraging patterns is not so great as in humming-birds, perhaps because so few species of sun-birds have been studied. However, the advantage of territorialism has been measured in the sun-bird Nectarinia reichenowi. Individuals with territories lose much less nectar to competitors than do those without territories. 5. Field work on three species of tropical reef fishes involved a single aggressive species whose individuals attacked a wide range of species intruding on their territories. The stimulus for aggression in Pomacentrus jenkinsi seemed to be an “object moving through [its] territory”. As suggested for humming-birds, the stimulus is the behaviour rather than the identity of the intruder. 6. The relationships found in stingless bees, stomatopods, crayfish, and limpets are simpler. The dominant and subordinate species divide the resources in their habitat, the dominants' aggression preventing the subordinates from using resources that were otherwise available to them. 7. A general pattern emerges. Mutual interspecific territorialism occurs between species that (i) have different geographic ranges, (ii) occupy different habitats, or (iii) use different resources within the same habitat. Examples of two species holding separate territories on the same resources within the same habitat are rare and occur when the dominant species is rare relative to the available resources. These observations are contrary to the usual view that interspecific territorialism is an adaptation that permits co-existence of potential competitors within the same habitat. 8. Interspecific territorialism is sometimes adaptive and sometimes maladaptive, depending upon the species and the situation. 9. The general pattern of occurrence of the behaviour and the general nature of the stimulus for aggression, i.e., the behaviour rather than the identity of the intruder, suggest that interspecific territoriality is a fortuitous consequence of selection for intraspecific territorialism, the latter being not only an adaptation to the presence of conspecific competitors but a pre-adaptation to the presence of competitors of other species, should they occur.  相似文献

Rhodopseudomonas capsulata required potassium (or rubidium or cesium as analogs of potassium) for growth. These cations were actively accumulated by the cells by a process following Michaelis-Menten saturation kinetics. The monovalent cation transport system had Km's of 0.2 mM K+, 0.5 mM Rb+, and 2.6 mM Cs+. The rates of uptake of substrates by the potassium transport system varied with the age of the culture, although the affinity constant for the substrates remained constant. The maximal velocity of uptake of K+ was lower in aerobically grown cells than in photosynthetically grown cells, although the Km's for K+ and for Rb+ were about the same.  相似文献

Polycarbonate Nuclepore filters are better than cellulose filters for the direct counting of bacteria because they have uniform pore size and a flat surface that retains all of the bacteria on top of the filter. Although cellulose filters also retain all of the bacteria, many are trapped inside the filter where they cannot be counted. Before use, the Nuclepore filters must be dyed with irgalan black to eliminate autofluorescence. Direct counts of bacteria in lake and ocean waters are twice as high with Nuclepore filters as with cellulose filters.  相似文献

To study the effect of root-zone pH on characteristic responsesof -fed plants, soybeans (Glycine max {L.}Merr. cv. Ransom) were grown in flowing solution culture for21 d on four sources of N (1.0 mol m–3 , 0.67 mol m–3 plus 0.33 mol m–3, 0.33 mol m–3 plus 0.67 mol m–3 , and 1.0 mol m–3) with nutrient solutions maintained at pH 6.0, 5.5, 5.0, and 4.5. Amino acid concentration increased inplants grown with as the sole source of N at all pH levels. Total amino acid concentration in the rootsof -fed plants was 8 to 10 times higher than in -fed plants, with asparagine accounting for more than 70% of the total in the roots of these plants.The concentration of soluble carbohydrates in the leaves of-fed plants was greater than that of -fed plants, but was lower in roots of -fed plants, regardless of pH. Starch concentration was only slightlyaffected by N source or root-zone pH. At all levels of pH tested,organic acid concentration in leaves was much lower when was the sole N source than when all or part of theN was supplied as . Plants grown with mixed plus N sources were generally intermediate between - and -fed plants. Thus, changes in tissue compositioncharacteristic of nutrition when root-zone pH was maintained at 4.5 and growth was reduced, still occurredwhen pH was maintained at 5.0 or above, where growth was notaffected. 1. The Riparian, Channel and Environmental (RCE) Inventory has been developed to assess the physical and biological condition of small streams in the lowland, agricultural landscape. It consists of sixteen characteristics which define the structure of the riparian zone, stream channel morphology, and the biological condition in both habitats. 2. The inventory is based on the view that in landscapes where non-point source pollution and agriculture dominate, the environmental condition of small streams can be assessed by an appraisal of the physical condition of the riparian zone and stream channel. It is assumed that disturbance of this physical structure is a major cause for reduction of stream biological structure and function. This assumption is supported by a case study using fifteen Italian stream locations in which the RCE was found to be positively correlated to the benthic macroinvertebrate community as measured by the Extended Biotic Index (r = 0.80, P < 0.001) and the Shannon Diversity Index (r = 0.73; P < 0.001). 3. The inventory is designed for quick use to cover a large number of streams in a short period of time. When used it generates a numerical score which can be used to compare the physical and biological condition between different streams within a region. The numerical score is divided into five, colour-coded classes to facilitate use in streammonitoring programmes and to allow comparison with biological indices.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Cladistic analysis of mayflies suggests that dispersalwas very asymmetrical after the new land connection betweenNorth and South America. Twenty-one genera apparently movedfrom South to North and Central America, but there is good evidencefor only one North American genus moving into the south. Testablepredictions are possible once the boreal (Laurasian) or austral(Gondwanian) designations are made. For example, Paracloeodes,a genus of austral origin, was predicted to be found in SouthAmerica, and in North America in warm rivers north and eastof its known distribution. These predictions have been confirmed.Other characteristics of tropical mayflies, such as length oflarval period and emergence and mating patterns, may be usedto predict habitats and characteristics of present North Americangenera. Merger events and consequent dispersal of organismshave profound influences on distributional patterns, and fromsuch information, biologically useful generalities can be made.  相似文献

The alleles of the yeast mating type locus, MATα and MATa, determine the yeast cell types, a,α, and a/α. It has been proposed that the MATα2 product negatively regulates expression of unlinked a-specific genes, and that the MATα1 product positively regulates expression of unlinked α-specific genes. The behavior of mutants defective in MATα2, which are deficient in mating and in production of α-factor, can thus be attributed to antagonism between a-specific and α-specific functions expressed simultaneously in matα2? strains. If this view is correct, then elimination by mutation of the specific functions required to mate as α may allow matα2 mutants to mate as a. In order to test this possibility, we examined the interactions between matα2 mutations and various unlinked mutations that cause α cells but not a cells to be mating defective (α-specific STE mutations). Three α-specific mutations (ste3, ste13 and kex2) were found to be non-allelic. Furthermore, although matα2 mutants mate weakly as a, matα2, ste3 double mutants, but not matα2 ste13 or matα2 kex2 double mutants, mate efficiently as a. The ability of matα2 ste3 strains to mate as a supports the view that matα2 mutants express a-specific mating functions, and suggests that a mating functions are expressed constitutively in MATa cells. The mating behaviour of the matα2 ste3 double mutant is consistent with the proposal that STE3 is positively regulated by the MATα1 product.  相似文献

Flash-induced absorption changes of Triton-solubilized Photosystem I particles from spinach were studied under reducing and/or illumination conditions that serve to alter the state of bound electron acceptors. By monitoring the decay of P-700 following each of a train of flashes, we found that P-430 or components resembling it can hold 2 equivalents of electrons transferred upon successive illuminations. This requires the presence of a good electron donor, reduced phenazine methosulfate or neutral red, otherwise the back reaction of P-700+ with P-430 occurs in about 30 ms. If the two P-430 sites, designated Centers A and B, are first reduced by preilluminating flashes or chemically by dithionite under anaerobic conditions, then subsequent laser flashes generate a 250 μs back reaction of P-700+, which we associate with a more primary electron acceptor A2. In turn, when A2 is reduced by background (continuous) illumination in presence of neutral red and under strongly reducing conditions, laser flashes then produce a much faster (3 μs) back reaction at wavelengths characteristic of P-700. We associate this with another more primary electron acceptor, A1, which functions very close to P-700. The organization of these components probably corresponds to the sequence P-700-A1-A2-P-430[AB]. The relation of the optical components to acceptor species detected by EPR, by electron-spin polarization or in terms of peptide components of Photosystem I is discussed.Preliminary experiments with broken chloroplasts suggest that an analogous situation occurs there, as well.  相似文献
