Chromosome counts in some Alchemilla species from north-east Anatolia

This paper presents the results of karyological analysis of seven Alchemilla species collected from north-east Anatolia, Turkey, belonging to Alchemilla sect. Alchemilla subsect. Heliodrosium ser. Vulgares and subsect. Calycanthum ser. Elatae and ser. Calycinae. The following chromosome numbers were determined: A. haraldi 2n = 85–105, A. heterophylla 2n = 85–97, A. hirtipedicellata 2n = 86–100, A. oriturcica 2n = 86–102, A. persica 2n = 78–99, A. procerrima 2n = 69–78 and A. trabzonica 2n = 78–88. The chromosome numbers of three of these seven species are presented for the first time.     

Teixeiria lusitanica, a new fossil flower from the Early Cretaceous of Portugal with affinities to Ranunculales

A charcoalified fossil flower bud of a new genus and species (Teixeiria lusitanica) is described from the Early Cretaceous of Portugal. The flower is actinomorphic and unisexually male. At the base of the bud there are several bracts of different sizes, which are followed by sepal-like and petal-like tepals. Bracts and perianth organs seem to be arranged spirally and to exhibit transitions between different organ categories. The androecium has numerous stamens in two sizes, but with unclear arrangement. Pollen is small and tricolpate with a perforate tectum and a densely columellate infratectal layer. No carpels or remains of carpels could be observed on the floral axis. Teixeiria lusitanica shows most affinities to members of Ranunculales. There are also some similarities with Berberidopsis (Berberidopsidaceae, Berberidopsidales) and members of the Saxifragales (Hamamelidaceae and Daphniphyllaceae).

A para-nitrophenol phosphonate probe labels distinct serine hydrolases of Arabidopsis

Activity-based protein profiling represents a powerful methodology to probe the activity state of enzymes under various physiological conditions. Here we present the development of a para-nitrophenol phosphonate activity-based probe with structural similarities to the potent agrochemical paraoxon. We demonstrate that this probes labels distinct serine hydrolases with the carboxylesterase CXE12 as the predominant target in Arabidopsis thaliana. The designed probe features a distinct labeling pattern and therefore represents a promising chemical tool to investigate physiological roles of selected serine hydrolases such as CXE12 in plant biology.
