Using open-top chambers, four prominent species (Lolium perenne,Cynosurus cristatus, Holcus lanatusandAgrostis capillaris) ofIrish neutral grasslands were grown at ambient and elevated(700 µmol mol-1) atmospheric CO2for a period of 8 months.The effects of interspecific competition on plant responsesto CO2enrichment were investigated by growing the species ina four-species mixture. The results indicate that the speciesdiffer in their ability to respond to elevated CO2. CO2-enrichmenthad the largest effect on the biomass production ofH. lanatus,but substantial stimulations in biomass production were alsofound for the other three species. The CO2-stimulation of biomassproduction forH. lanatuswas accompanied by increased tillering.In addition, reductions in specific leaf area were found forall species. Exposure to elevated CO2increased the communitybiomass of the four-species mixture. This increase can be mainlyattributed to a significant increase in the biomass ofH. lanatusatelevated CO2. No statistically-significant changes in speciescomposition of community biomass were found. However,H. lanatusdidincrease its share of community biomass at each of the harvests,with the other three species, mainlyL. perenne, suffering lossesin their shares at elevated CO2. IT seems to have been widely assumed that autonomic neurones respond to axonal damage much as do somatic motoneurones. From an extensive series of experiments on the albino rat, however, we have obtained evidence that autonomic preganglionic neurones are much more seriously affected. Thus, when the cervical vagus on one side was either crushed or cut, we consistently found in more than 100 animals that changes in the cells of the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus were more severe and more protracted than in those of the hypoglossal nucleus when its nerve was similarly treated. The changes are seen particularly well in histochemical preparations designed to show the distribution of various metabolic enzymes. In the work described here attention was concentrated on alterations in the cholinesterases and in acid phosphatase.  相似文献

Thin sections of diseased raspberry (Rubus idaeus) were examined by electron microscopy. Plants of the cv. Baumforth's B and of an aphid (Amphorophora rubi)-resistant breeding selection (6820/54), both infected with raspberry vein chlorosis virus (RVCV) but not with other detectable viruses, contained large bacilliform particles c. 430 × 65 nm. Particles occurred in the cytoplasm and perinuclear space of a small proportion of xylem parenchyma cells. They had an inner core c. 25–30 nm in diameter with cross-banding of periodicity 4·5 nm, and were bounded by an outer membrane. They are probably the particles of RVCV. Plants of cv. Mailing Jewel and of a selection (M14) both showing symptoms of raspberry mosaic (veinbanding) disease contained smaller bacilliform particles c. 125 × 30 nm, which occurred singly or in clusters in the cytoplasm of a small proportion of vascular parenchyma cells. It is not known which, if any, of the viruses associated with raspberry mosaic are represented by the particles.  相似文献

The trapping of alate aphids in emergence cages each 1 yd2 (0–83 m2) over cereal crops from mid-June to the end of July, 1964 to 1971, always revealed colonies of cereal aphids within the crop. Four species, Sitobion avenae, S. fragariae, Metopolophium dirhodum and Rhopalosiphum padi occurred every year in different proportions. Alate aphids from winter wheat were most numerous in 1968 and fewest in 1967. Alatae developed slightly earlier in cages than in the field and peak catches were a few days earlier than in a nearby 12-2 m suction trap. Cereal aphid colonies were adversely affected by bad weather in May, e.g. in 1969, and by predators. Coccinellidae (chiefly Propylea 14-punctata) were the dominant predators in 1971 and 1968, Syrphidae in 1966, 1971 and 1968 and Chrysopidae in 1970. Parasites belonging mainly to the genus Aphidius were numerous every year. When hyperparasites such as Asaphes vulgaris, Lygocerus sp., Conostigmus sp. and Phaenoglyphis sp. were abundant as in 1967, they affected numbers of aphids in the current year and increased them in the following year (1968), possibly by hindering early, heavy parasitism. Hyperparasites could have an important influence in fluctuations of cereal aphid populations from year to year. Aphids of one species or another are always present in cereal crops in sufficient numbers during the summer months to provide copious quantities of honey dew, and this is unlikely to be a limiting factor in the biology of the wheat bulb fly, Leptohylemyia coarctata.  相似文献

A barley variety of Ethiopian origin, with a single Mendelian gene con-fering tolerance to barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV), was equally tolerant to a number of isolates of the virus, whereas a susceptible European barley was more susceptible to isolates transmitted by Rhopalosiphum padi L. than to those transmitted by Macrosiphum (Sitobion) avenae (Fab). However, hybrids between these two varieties homozygous for the Ethiopian tolerance gene were more tolerant to ‘mild’ than to ‘severe’ isolates, irrespective of the vector specificity. The European variety was damaged more severely by all isolates when infected early than when infected late in its development, but the hybrids were damaged more severely by M. awraae-transmitted isolates when infected late. It is suggested that in susceptible plants the concentration, rather than the virulence, of the virus determines disease severity, whereas the reverse is true in plants possessing a gene which reduces virus multiplication. Virus concentration appears to determine the severity of R. padi-transmitted isolates, while virulence determines the severity of M. avenae-transmitted isolates. The latter would also seem to be adapted towards late infection.  相似文献

Damage caused by wood-pigeons, Columba palumbus, to spring cabbage and Brussels sprouts was measured during three winters in two areas in the Vale of Evesham, Worcestershire. In one area (experimental) special attempts were made to reduce pigeon damage in addition to the normal efforts of the growers. In the other (control) area no such additional measures were taken. There was slightly more damage in 1969-70, but low market prices made it less important than in 1968-9 or 1970-1. There was no significant difference in any season between the damage in the control and experimental areas. No damage was caused to Brussels-sprout buttons as the birds ate only the tops of the plants; they preferred Brussels sprouts to cabbages and it is likely that the presence of the former helped to reduce the amount of damage to nearby cabbage fields. The amount of damage was not correlated with the amount spent on crop protection; actual damage was not correlated with the grower's estimates in the control area. In the second season a very intensive shooting campaign in the experimental area did not result in less damage, but the movements of local inhabitants and farm workers near a village did afford protection. The significance of the damage in the Vale and elsewhere is assessed in relation to the economics of crop production, the cropping pattern for cabbages and the behaviour and ecology of the wood-pigeon.  相似文献

A system is described for growing plants in flowing solutionin which the concentration (activity) of some nutrient ionsis continuously monitored and held almost constant by meansof ion-selective electrodes which control the operation of nutrientpumps. By recording the concentration of a given ion in theflowing nutrient solution and the amount of that ion which isdelivered by the nutrient pumps, it is possible to follow nutrientuptake over long and short periods. The uptake and translocation of sulphanilamide, sulphacetamide,sulphaguani-dine, sulphapyridine, sulphadiazine, sulphathiazole,and 4:4-diaminodiphenyl-sulphone by broad bean plants growingin water culture has been studied. After varying times of exposureto the compounds at 100/µg./ml., total sulphonamide presentin the roots, stems, and leaves was determined in acid-hydrolysedmacerates by diazotization and coupling of the primary aminogroup. These compounds were identified in the leaves of treatedplants by paper chromatography. Accumulation of sulphonamide in the roots appears to be relatedsimply to time, and the concentration of sulphonamide may, eventually,be far higher than that in the treating solution. Movement fromthe roots to the stems and leaves depends on transpiration.Sulphanilamide and the sulphone passed rapidly into the leaves;sulphacetamide, sulphapyridine, sulphadiazine, and sulphathiazolemoved less rapidly. There was, however, a marked accumulationof sulphacetamide, sulphapyridine, sulphadiazine, sulphathiazole,and the sulphone in the roots. From 1949 to 1952 field trials were made to determine the effect of seed dressings containing γ-BHC, with and without the addition of organic mercurial compounds, upon the establishment of sugar-beet seedlings. Most of the trials were made in fields where no serious pest problems were anticipated. The 1949 trials established the concentration of γ-BHC non-phytocidal to sugar-beet seedlings. Later trials tested the effect on pre- and post-singling plant populations of dressings applied to natural or rubbed seed sown at standardized rates. Parallel tests of dressed seed were made on farms representing a variety of soil types, It was found that the phytotoxiCity of γ-BHC varied with season and soil type, but that a dressing containing 40 % was usually safe. In these trials, the benefits from seed dressing were, as a rule, slight. Generally the combined mercury-γ-BHC seed dressing gave the best pre-singling stand of plants. Most of the improvement was attributable to the organic mercury rather than to the γ-BHC, but where pest attacks occurred, γ-BHC gave marked improvements in stand. Wireworm appeared to be the chief pest controlled: control of pygmy mangold beetle was only partial.  相似文献
