Variability of key biochemical parameters in senescent leaves of sugar beet at nitrate deficiency and surplus accumulation of glucose

Parameters of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) leaf senescence were investigated in the stage of vegetative growth in plants grown at normal nitrate level (N) or under its deficiency (DefN). Accelerated senescence was initiated by the 41-h-long exposure of leaf discs on the surface of water with alternating darkness and light. In plants grown at DefN, the number of leaves and their average area decreased; after the incubation of the discs from such leaves on water, the content of soluble carbohydrates (sCarb) and especially of glucose sharply increased as compared with normal level of nitrate (N), whereas the content of soluble protein (sProt) and Rubisco activity considerably decreased, which is characteristic of the negative hexokinase (HXK1) effect of glucose. The rate of a decrease in the content of sProt in the course of leaf senescence calculated for the leaf of each strorey was lower than the rate of a decrease in RuBisCO activity. A decrease in the content of sProt and RuBisCO activity in all the storeys of leaves grown at joint action of nitrate deficit (DefN) and incubation on water was on the average greater than in each of these treatments separately but less than the sum of these effects. The imperfection of the putative mechanism of signal transduction at DefN and excess glucose and their interaction in senescent sugar beet leaves is discussed as well as the opportunity to use the ratio between sCarb and sProt for the evaluation of the manifestation of the negative hexokinase effect of glucose.     

Quantum mechanical aspects of the effects of weak magnetic fields on biological objects

Possible mechanisms of action of weak combined magnetic fields on biological systems have been discussed in terms of quantum mechanics. The approaches proposed make it possible to solve the problem of the failure to compare the energy of active factors with the energy of thermal motion (kT problem). A mechanism of action of combined magnetic fields on biosystems has been proposed.     

Δ5-7-Ketosterols with modified side chain: The synthesis and the effects on viability and cholesterol biosynthesis in Hep G2 cells

(22E)-3β-Hydroxysitosta-5,22-dien-7-one, (22R,23R)-3β,22,23-trihydroxysitost-5-en-7-one, and (22R,23R)-3β-hydroxy-22,23-isopropylidenedioxysitost-5-en-7-one were synthesized. The cytotoxicity and effects on cholesterol biosynthesis of the resulting 7-ketosterols, 7-ketocholesterol, and (22S,23S)-3β-hydroxy-22,23-oxidositost-5-en-7-one were studied in hepatoblastoma Hep G2 cells.     

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae neuraminidase and its role in pathogenicity

The role of the enzyme neuraminidase in pathogenicity of the bacillus Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae was studied. Different substances with low and high molecular weight were tested as inducers of E. rhusiopathiae neuraminidase biosynthesis. It was found that macromolecular complexes induce the secretion of the enzyme. K(M) values for different substrates showed that the affinity of the E. rhusiopathiae neuraminidase increases in parallel with the enlargement of the molecular weight of glycoproteins. Results from the rabbits skin test confirmed the role of E. rhusiopathiae neuraminidase as a factor of pathogenicity with spreading functions.

The effect of the operation modes of a gas discharge low-pressure amalgam lamp on the intensity of generation of 185 nm UV vacuum radiation

The effect of forest fires and clearing of fire-destroyed stands on pedoecological conditions of natural forest regeneration

The study investigated the effect of forest fires and clearing of fire-destroyed stands on pedoecological conditions of forest regeneration in the Middle Ob pine forests. The study revealed that K content was elevated, pH changed to more neutral, and humus content (detritus) decreased in the upper layer of sod-podzolic soil. After clearing, the temperature of the upper soil layers increased somewhat and that of surface air increased 1.5–2 times. Air temperature was occasionally too high for pine seedlings to survive. The moisture content of the upper soil layer was up to 10% higher than on the control sites. The ecological conditions of the burned sites were generally hospitable for natural forest regeneration.
