The Accumulation and Transport of Calcium in Barley Roots   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The accumulation and transport of Ca by various zones of 6-day old barley roots (Hordeum vulgare L.) were examined with special reference to their relationship to the salt status of the root. The initial salt content had a profound effect on Ca transport and a lesser effect on Ca accumulation. High-salt roots transported Ca in much larger amounts than did low salt roots. In low salt roots the apical zone was more active in transporting Ca to the conducting tissue than were the mid or basal zones However, in high salt roots all zones were about equally active in transporting Ca. The metabolic inhibitor, DNP, had little effect on accumulation but inhibited transport very effectively. The effect of DNP was more pronounced on transport from the apical zone than from the other root zones. Calcium applied anywhere along the root length moved only basally and its polarized longitudinal movement was maintained irrespective of the salt status of the root. The movement of Ca was characterized by a rapid release of preabsorbed Ca and a ready exchange of apoplastic Ca. The hypothesis is presented that cellular Ca is in a relatively mobile state. Its entry into the symplasm is the rate limiting step in longitudinal transport and its overall movement is metabolically controlled.  相似文献

The day 13–14 chicken embryo is a useful model for studieson prenatal stress responses. Free dopamine, norepinephrineand epinephrine in its plasma, amniotic and allantoic fluidrespond to a variety of stresses. The allantoic fluid also containsconjugated catecholamines and conjugated steroids. However,a blood/allantois barrier excludes free thyroid hormones andfree steroids, and insulin. On the other hand, the allantoicfluid contains at least 40 amino acids (including six excitatoryamino acids) and related compounds. Most, possibly all, componentsof the allantoic fluid are regulated at specific blood/allantoisand amnion/allantois barriers, and they respond to ethanol stressand metabolite loading differentially. The avian allantois isa depot for important metabolites and messenger substances whichseems to be controlled by as yet unidentified hormones  相似文献

Several physiological processes controlling tree phenology remain poorly understood and in particular bud dormancy. Many studies have emphasised the action of chilling temperatures in breaking dormancy. However, the effect of the preceding summer temperatures has rarely been investigated although there is some evidence that they may be involved in the settlement and intensity of dormancy as well as cold acclimation. In this paper, thermal time to budburst in relation to the duration of chilling outdoors, preceding summer temperatures and forcing temperatures was studied by outdoors experiments in seedlings of Platanus acerifolia , Vitis vinifera , Quercus pubescens and Castanea sativa . Results showed that temperatures of the preceding summer had no significant effect on the timing of budburst, P. acerifolia and Q. pubescens showed a very weak response to the duration of chilling, and the phenological characteristics of each species were found to be adapted to the climate conditions of its own geographical area. The phenological model used in this study explained 82–100% of the variance of the data without taking into account summer temperatures. Thus, although summer temperatures may be well involved in the intensity of dormancy and cold hardiness, they do not significantly affect budburst and therefore may not need to be considered in phenological models for predicting budburst.  相似文献

Polyamines are small cationic molecules necessary for growth and differentiation in all cells. Although mammalian cells have been studied extensively, particularly as targets of polyamine antagonists, i.e. antitumor agents, polyamine metabolism has also been studied as a potential drug target in microorganisms. Since little is known concerning polyamine metabolism in the microsporidia, we investigated it in Encephalitozoon cuniculi, a microspordian associated with disseminated infections in humans. Organisms were grown in RK-13 cells and harvested using Percoll gradients. Electron microscopy indicated that the fractions banding at 1.051-1.059/g/ml in a microgradient procedure, and 1.102-1.119/g/ml in a scaled-up procedure were nearly homogenous, consisting of pre-emergent (immature) spores which showed large arrays of ribosomes near polar filament coils. Intact purified pre-emergent spores incubated with [1H] ornithine and methionine synthesized putrescine, spermidine, and spermine, while [14C]spermine was converted to spermidine and putrescine. Polyamine production from ornithine was inhibitable by DL-alpha-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) but not by DL-alpha-difluoromethylarginine (DFMA). Cell-free extracts from mature spores released into the growth media had ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase (AdoMetdc), and spermidine/spermine N1-acetyltransferase (SSAT) activities. ODC activity was inhibited by DFMO, but not by DFMA. AdoMetdc was putrescine-stimulated and inhibited by methylglyoxal-bis(guanylhydrazone); arginine decarboxylase activity could not be detected. It is apparent from these studies that Encephalitozoon cuniculi pre-emergent spores have a eukaryotic-type polyamine biosynthetic pathway and can interconvert exogenous polyamines. Pre-emergent spores were metabolically active with respect to polyamine synthesis and interconversion, while intact mature spores harvested from culture supernatants had little metabolic activity.  相似文献

Three endemic Cretan land snail species of the genus Mastus (Beck, 1837) from the island group of Koufonisi (south-east Crete) and the eastern part of Crete, were studied by multivariate analysis of shell morphology and analysis of mtDNA sequences. The phylogeny of the populations studied and the processes effecting the genetic and morphological diversity of the species were investigated. Extremely high mtDNA sequence divergence was observed both within and between populations. The Cretan populations could not be distinguished morphologically, while the populations of the islets were more distinct. We argue that the active geological past of the area (including sea level changes) and the long-term presence of humans has produced a mixing up of Mastus populations leading to the accumulation of high divergence of mtDNA sequences on a small spatial scale. The limited morphological diversity and the distinct shell 'identity' of the islets' populations can be attributed to the selective pressures of the island group.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 78, 383–399.  相似文献
