The barn owl (Tyto alba) is a non-migratory species widely distributed across much of North America in areas with extensive old-field and grassland habitat and without extensive winter snow cover. We investigated the genetic diversity and phylogeographic patterns of barn owl populations in western North America, ranging from British Columbia (BC) to southern California, and one eastern population from Pennsylvania. We also determined the genetic distinctiveness of a population off the coast of southern California, Santa Barbara Island, as management plans to control the local owl population are being considered to decrease predation rate on the now threatened Scripps’s Murrelet (Synthliboramphus scrippsi). Using 8 polymorphic microsatellite markers (N = 126) and ND2 mitochondrial sequences (N = 37), we found little to no genetic structure among all sampled regions, with the exception of Santa Barbara Island. The BC mainland population, despite its northwestern geographically peripheral location and ongoing habitat degradation, is not genetically depauperate. However, individuals from Vancouver Island, likewise a peripheral population in BC, exhibited the lowest genetic diversity of all sampled locations. The low global FST value (0.028) estimated from our study suggests that old-field agricultural habitats are well connected in North America. Since the BC population has declined by about 50 % within the last three decades, it is vital to focus on preserving the remaining barn owl habitats in BC to allow successful establishment from neighbouring populations. Additionally, our microsatellite data revealed that the population on Santa Barbara Island showed genetic divergence from its continental counterpart. Mitochondrial data, however, demonstrated that this island population is not a monophyletic lineage containing unique haplotypes, and hence cannot be designated as an Evolutionarily Significant Unit.  相似文献

Introduction

Recurrence of atrial fibrillation after pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) occurs frequently and may be associated with electrical reconnection of the pulmonary veins (PV). We investigated spatial distribution of electrical reconnection during re-do procedures in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation who had previous successful acute electrical PVI with either single irrigated tip, antral ablation (s-RF; n = 38) or multi-electrode, duty-cycled ablation (PVAC; n = 48).

Methods and Results

EP navigator, mapping and irrigated tip ablation catheters were used in all re-do procedures. Sites of reconnection were assessed in a 12-segment model. Baseline clinical and demographic characteristics were similar in both groups. The number of PVs reconnected per patient was similar in both groups (2.9 ± 0.9 and 3.2 ± 0.7 (p = 0.193), s?RF and PVAC, respectively), and each PV was equally affected. However, the inferior quadrant of the right lower PV was significantly more vulnerable to reconnection after previous PVAC ablation, whereas the superior quadrant of the right upper PV showed significantly more reconnection in the s?RF group.

Conclusion

The overall number of PVs reconnected was equally high in both groups, and each PV was affected equally. However, there were significant differences in the spatial distribution of electrical reconnection. Better understanding of predilection sites for reconnection might help to improve the long-term success rate of PVI.

Background

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy often presents with the clinical signs of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). The increase in scientific publications addressing this relatively rare condition may result in higher awareness and diagnosis of takotsubo cardiomyopathy.

Aim

To assess the observed prevalence per year of takotsubo cardiomyopathy in a large registry of patients with STEMI, during a 12-year inclusion period.

Method

All patients presenting with STEMI at a large regional cardiology clinic were entered into a database (n = 8,413, mean age 63 ± 13 years). Takotsubo cardiomyopathy was diagnosed in 42 patients (0.5?%). Years of evaluation were defined as ‘early years’ (January 2002 to December 2007; n = 4350) and ‘later years’ (January 2008 to December 2013). Multivariable analyses were performed to adjust for differences in demographical and clinical variables.

Results

In later years, the age of STEMI patients was slightly higher (64 ± 13 vs. 63 ± 13 years, p < 0.001), with more patients with clinical symptoms of shock (10 vs. 7?%, p < 0.001) or a history of percutaneous coronary intervention or hypertension (10 vs. 8?%, p = 0.001 and 37 vs. 34?%, p < 0.001). Smoking and a positive family history were less often observed during later years (39 vs. 46?%, p < 0.001 and 37 vs. 42?% p < 0.001). Patients with takotsubo cardiomyopathy were more often female (81 vs. 27?%, p = 0.001). Takotsubo cardiomyopathy was more often diagnosed in the later period (0.7 vs. 0.3?%, OR 2.4, 95?% CI 1.2–4.6, p = 0.009). The higher prevalence of takotsubo cardiomyopathy in recent years remained significant after adjustment for differences in patient characteristics (OR 2.1, 95?% CI 1.1–4.3).

Conclusion

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is currently more often diagnosed in patients with STEMI compared with in earlier years. This is probably due to the increased scientific and clinical awareness among doctors, but the prevalence is still low.

Plants provide the bulk of the nearly 12,000 diterpenoid natural products, which include diterpene resin acids that have important medicinal and industrial applications. However, the biological function of these terpenoids in plants is poorly understood. Here, we highlight recent work that implicates a signaling function in angiosperms for some of these diterpenoids. In particular, this review will focus on the involvement of an abietane diterpenoid, dehydroabietinal, in the activation of systemic acquired resistance, and draw attention to new evidence that supports a role for dehydroabietinal in the transition from the vegetative phase of growth to reproductive development in the crucifer plant Arabidopsis thaliana.  相似文献

Withanolides are highly oxygenated natural products. These C28 steroids with ergostane-based skeletons functionalized at C-22 and C-26 form six-membered δ-lactone rings. Withanolides containing a δ-lactone side chain often occur in Solanaceae and have a variety of biological activities because of their complicated structures. Characteristic spectroscopic behaviors and biosynthesis of withanolides are conducive to their structural elucidation and “biomimetic synthesis”, respectively. However, the last review to summarize their spectroscopic features and biosynthesis was in 1996. Since then, many withanolides with novel structures have been described by their spectra with biosynthesis investigated with many bioassays. This review surveys δ-lactone withanolides and emphasizes their spectral features, configurations and biosynthetic genes. The period reviewed includes through January 2014. Species are the most commonly recognised unit for conservation management, yet significant variation can exist below the level of taxonomic recognition and there is a lack of consensus around how a species might be defined. This definition has particular relevance when species designations are used to apportion conservation effort and when definitions might be made through legislation. Here, we use microsatellite DNA analyses to test the proposition that the last remaining populations of the endangered grassland earless dragon (Tympanocryptis pinguicolla) harbour substantial cryptic genetic variation. Our study provides strong evidence that long historical isolation and the recent impacts of urbanization, have led to genetic differentiation in microsatellite DNA allele frequencies and high numbers of private alleles among three genetic clusters. This differentiation is partially concordant with previous mitochondrial DNA analyses, which show the two regions (Canberra and Monaro) where this species exists, to be reciprocally monophyletic, but differs through the identification of a third genetic cluster that splits a northern Canberra cluster from that of southern Canberra. Our data also identify a stark contrast in population genetic structure between clusters such that high levels of genetic structure are evident in the highly urbanised Canberra region but not in the largely rural Monaro region. We conclude that this species, like many reptiles, harbours considerable cryptic variation and currently comprises three distinct and discrete units. These units could be classified as separate species for the purpose of conservation under the relevant Australian and international Acts drawing management appropriate to that status.  相似文献

The increasing production of food waste worldwide and new international regulations call for the development of new technologies to treat this biowaste. Anaerobic processes are able to treat efficiently organic wastes, producing at the same time different value-added compounds. In addition, due to the lower costs and environmental impacts associated with these processes when compared to other options, they are among the most promising technologies for food waste treatment. This article reviews the state-of-the-art dealing with treatment of food waste by anaerobic processes, with emphasis on the most recent research carried out. The different processes that are assessed are anaerobic digestion for methane production, anaerobic fermentation for hydrogen and/or volatile fatty acids production and 2-stage systems. The primary issues associated with each alternative are presented, paying special attention to accumulation of ammonia and volatile fatty acids in the reactor. In addition, the latest developments to overcome the complications of each system are also described, focusing on how they improve its stability and performance. Moreover, the relevant economic and environmental research has also been reviewed, including several life cycle analyses that compare anaerobic processes with other technologies used for food waste treatment. Different case studies are also presented. Finally, recommendations for future research for the anaerobic processes studied and options for process integration are discussed. Moving towards the idea of a circular economy, a potential biorefinery for food waste valorization is also proposed.  相似文献

Human exposure to genotoxic agents has dramatically increased. Both endogenous (reactive species generated during physiological and pathological processes) and exogenous (UV light, ionizing radiation, alkylating agents, antimetabolites and topoisomerase inhibitors, air, water and food pollutants) factors can impair genomic stability. The cumulative DNA damage causes mutations involved in the development of cancer and other disorders (neuromuscular and neurodegenerative diseases, immune deficiencies, infertility, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome and aging). Dietary flavonoids have protective effects against DNA damage induced by different genotoxic agents such as mycotoxins, food processing-derived contaminants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, N-nitrosamines), cytostatic agents, other medications (estrogenic and androgenic hormones), nicotine, metal ions (Cd2+, Cr6+), radiopharmaceuticals and ionizing radiation. Dietary flavonoids exert their genoprotection by reducing oxidative stress and modulation of enzymes responsible for bioactivation of genotoxic agents and detoxification of their reactive metabolites. Data on structure–activity relationship is sometimes contradictory. Free hydroxyl groups on the B ring (catechol moiety) and C-3 position of the C ring are important structural features for the antigenotoxic activity. As dietary flavonoids are extensively metabolized, more in vivo studies are needed for a better characterization of their antigenotoxic potential.  相似文献

Objective

Erythropoietin (EPO) improves cardiac function and induces neovascularisation in post-myocardial infarction heart failure. The aim of this study was to analyse the association between the serum erythropoietin level and coronary collateral development in patients with coronary artery disease and chronic total occlusion.

Methods

A total of 168 patients consisting of 117 with coronary artery disease (CAD, (62 with chronic total occlusion (CTO), 55 without CTO)) and 51 with healthy coronary arteries were included in the study. The patients were assigned as coronary artery disease without CTO (group 0), CAD with CTO (group 1: poor collateral development, group 2: good collateral development) and normal coronary arteries (group 3).

Results

There was a significant positive correlation between serum EPO levels and the Rentrop scores in angiography (r = 0.243, p = 0.001). Similarly, a positive correlation was found between serum EPO levels and the Syntax scores (r = 0.253, p = 0.001). Echocardiography revealed a negative correlation between serum EPO levels and the cardiac ejection fraction (r = ?0.210, p = 0.006).

Conclusions

Serum EPO is a useful biomarker for coronary collateral development in patients with CTO.

Parasitic infections by Leishmania parasites remains a severe public health problem, especially in developing countries where it is highly endemic. Chemotherapy still remains a first option for the treatment of those diseases, despite the fact that available drugs exhibit a variety of shortcomings. Thus, innovative, less toxic more affordable and effective antileishmanial agents are urgently needed. The marine environment holds an immeasurable bio- and chemical diversity, being a valuable source of natural products with therapeutic potential. As invertebrates comprise about 60 % of all marine organisms, bioprospecting this class of organisms for antileishmanial properties may unravel unique and selective hit molecules. In this context, this review covers results on the literature of marine invertebrate extracts and pure compounds evaluated against Leishmania parasites mainly by in vitro methods. It comprises results obtained from the phyla Porifera, Cnidaria, Bryozoa (Ectoprota), Mollusca, Echinodermata, Annelida, Cetnophora, Platyhelminthes, sub phyla Crustacea (phylum Arthropoda) and Tunicata (phylum Chordata). Moreover, structure–activity relationships and possible mechanisms of action are mentioned, whenever available information is provided. About 70 species of marine invertebrates belonging to seven different phyla are included in this work. Besides a variety of crude extracts, a total of 140 pure compounds was tested against different Leishmania species. Although the research on the antileishmanial potential of marine invertebrates is in its early beginnings, promising results have been achieved that encourage further research. As more extracts and compounds are being screened, the possibility of finding active and selective antileishmanial molecules increases, rising new hope in the search for new treatments against leishmaniases.  相似文献
