Sexual selection is a concept that has probably been misunderstood and misrepresented more than any other idea in evolutionary biology, confusion that continues to the present day. We are not entirely sure why this is, but sexual politics seems to have played its role, as does a failure to understand what sexual selection is and why it was initially invoked. While in some ways less intuitive than natural selection, sexual selection is conceptually identical to it, and evolution via either mechanism will occur given sufficient genetic variation. Recent claims that sexual selection theory is fundamentally flawed are simply wrong and ignore an enormous body of evidence that provides a bedrock of support for this major mechanism of organic evolution. In fact it is partly due to this solid foundation that current research has largely shifted from documenting whether or not sexual selection occurs, to addressing more complex evolutionary questions. 相似文献

Commercial probiotic capsules that contain probiotic bacteria, kefir, koumiss and yogurt contain beneficial microorganisms that affect cholesterol levels and immune response, and are used for treatment of some diseases. We investigated using immunohistochemistry the effects of kefir, koumiss, yogurt and a commercial probiotic formulation on the expression levels of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α (PPARα) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-β/δ (PPAR-β/δ), which are members of the nuclear steroid hormone receptor superfamily in mouse kidney. Mice were assigned to five groups: group 1, commercial probiotic capsules; group 2, kefir; group 3, koumiss; group 4, yogurt; group 5, control. After oral administration for 15 days, body weights were recorded and kidney tissue samples were obtained. Hematoxylin & eosin staining and the streptavidin-biotin peroxidase complex (ABC) method were applied to tissue sections to examine histology and to determine the localization of PPARα and PPAR-β/δ in the kidneys. We found that the weights of the mice in the kefir, koumiss, yogurt and commercial probiotic capsules groups were increased compared to controls. No differences in kidney histology were observed in any of the experimental groups. Kefir, koumiss, yogurt and the commercial probiotic preparation increased PPARα and PPAR-β/δ expressions. 相似文献

Background
The combination of mass spectrometry and solution phase amide hydrogen/deuterium exchange (H/D exchange) experiments is an effective method for characterizing protein dynamics, and protein-protein or protein-ligand interactions. Despite methodological advancements and improvements in instrumentation and automation, data analysis and display remains a tedious process. The factors that contribute to this bottleneck are the large number of data points produced in a typical experiment, each requiring manual curation and validation, and then calculation of the level of backbone amide exchange. Tools have become available that address some of these issues, but lack sufficient integration, functionality, and accessibility required to address the needs of the H/D exchange community. A highly electronegative fraction of human plasma LDLs, designated L5, has distinctive biological activity that includes induction of apoptosis in bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAECs). This study was performed to identify a relationship between LDL density, electronegativity, and biological activity, namely, the induction of apoptosis in BAECs. Plasma LDLs from normolipidemic subjects and homozygotic familial hypercholesterolemia subjects were separated into five subfractions, with increasing electronegativity from L1 to L5, and into seven subfractions according to increasing density, D1 to D7. L1 to L5 were also separated according to density, and D1 to D7 were separated according to charge. The density profiles of L1 to L5 were similar (maximum density = 1.030 +/- 0.002 g/ml). Induction of apoptosis by all seven density subfractions was confined to the highly electronegative fraction, L5, and within each density subfraction the magnitude of apoptosis correlated with the L5 content. Electronegative LDL is heterogeneous with respect to density and composition, and induction of apoptosis is more strongly associated with LDL electronegativity than with LDL size or density. 相似文献

Natural and sexual selection are classically thought to oppose one another, and although there is evidence for this, direct experimental demonstrations of this antagonism are largely lacking. Here, we assessed the effects of sexual and natural selection on the evolution of cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs), a character subject to both modes of selection, in Drosophila simulans. Natural selection and sexual selection were manipulated in a fully factorial design, and after 27 generations of experimental evolution, the responses of male and female CHCs were assessed. The effects of natural and sexual selection differed greatly across the sexes. The responses of female CHCs were generally small, but CHCs evolved predominantly in the direction of natural selection. For males, profiles evolved via sexual and natural selection, as well as through the interaction between the two, with some male CHC components only evolving in the direction of natural selection when sexual selection was relaxed. These results indicate sex‐specific responses to selection, and that sexual and natural selection act antagonistically for at least some combinations of CHCs. 相似文献

The immune system is of increasing interest to evolutionary biologists. Immunity may trade-off against other fitness components, with recent work suggesting reproduction in particular impinges on immune defence. There may also be sex differences in the immune system. Additionally, while life history traits typically have low heritability, little is known about additive genetic variance of immunity. An insect's major defence against multicellular pathogens is to encapsulate the invader. Phenoloxidase (PO) is a key enzyme in the cascade resulting in the melanized capsule, and is often used to estimate resistance to an immune insult. We examined the effects of copulation, egg laying, sex and age on PO in Scathophaga stercoraria. We also measured the heritability of PO activity. The sexes differed in haemolymph PO activity and PO was significantly affected by age, but not by copulation or egg laying. There was significant heritable variation for haemolymph PO. 相似文献

Whether sexual selection increases or decreases female fitness is determined by the occurrence and relative importance of sexual-conflict processes and the ability of females to choose high-quality males. Experimentally enforced polyandry and monogamy have previously been shown to cause rapid evolution in the yellow dung fly Scathophaga stercoraria. Flies from polyandrous lines invested more in reproductive tissue, and this investment influenced paternity in sperm competition, but came at a cost to immune function. While some fitness consequences of enforced polyandry or monogamy have been examined when flies mate multiply, the consequences for female fitness when singly copulated remain unexplored. Under a good-genes scenario females from polyandrous lines should be of higher general quality and should outperform females from monogamous lines even with a single copulation. Under sexual conflict, costly adaptations will afford no advantages when females are allowed to mate only once. We investigate the lifetime reproductive success and longevity of females evolving under enforced monogamy or polyandry when mating once with males from these selection regimes. Females from polyandrous lines were found to have lower fitness than their monogamous counterparts when mating once. They died earlier and produced significantly fewer eggs and offspring. These results suggest that sexual conflict probably drove evolution under enforced polyandry as female fitness did not increase overall as expected with purely good-genes effects. 相似文献

While sperm competition has been extensively studied, the mechanisms involved are typically not well understood. Nevertheless, awareness of sperm competition mechanisms is currently recognised as being of fundamental importance for an understanding of many behavioural strategies. In the yellow dung fly, a model system for studies of sperm competition, second male sperm precedence appears to result from a combination of sperm displacement and sperm mixing. Displacement was until recently thought to be directly from the female's sperm stores, the spermathecae (i.e. males were thought to ejaculate directly into these stores), and under male control. However, recent work indicates displacement is indirect (i.e. males do not ejaculate directly into the sperm stores) and that it is female-aided, although the evidence was not based on direct observation. Here, we used histological techniques to directly determine interactions during copula and sperm transfer. Our results are consistent with inference and clearly show that males ejaculate into the bursa copulatrix. Our data are also consistent with active female involvement in sperm displacement, which is indirect, and indicate the aedeagus may remove some spermatozoa from the bursa at the end of copula. In addition, evidence suggests females aid sperm transport to and from the spermathecae, possibly by muscular movement of a spermathecal invagination. 相似文献

Sexual conflict occurs whenever there is not strict genetic monogamy. The sexually antagonistic coevolution that potentially occurs because of this conflict involves adaptation by one sex followed by the counter-adaptation by the other, and may be thought of as an evolutionary arms-race. As a result of these cycles of antagonistic coevolution, females from one population may be less resistant to heteropopulation males, at least after short periods of allopatry, as they will not have evolved any resistance to them. We tested this prediction in yellow dung fly (Scathophaga stercoraria) populations from the UK and Switzerland. Males from each population mated as first and second males to females from each population, and the mean numbers of offspring sired by the last male to mate in each situation were compared. We also compared the fertility and fecundity of single females mated to males from both populations, as well as the fertility and fecundity of the F(1) crosses. Both crosses produced viable and fertile offspring and the offspring sex ratios were not skewed. However, the fecundity of F(1)-cross females was greater than that of the parentals. In the sperm-competition experiment, there was a significant interaction between male and female origin influencing the proportion of offspring sired by the second male to mate, with heteropopulation males always outcompeting conpopulation males. This effect was independent of copula duration and the delay between copulations. In a separate experiment, we tested to see whether this was due to female preference for genetically dissimilar males but found no evidence for paternity biasing based on genetic similarity.
