We find no genetic variation at 550bp ofmtDNA control region among 55 Hainan Eld's deerin an island population that has sufferedrecent population contractions. Congenericspecies show high levels of variation at thislocus. We use a simulation approach to test thelikelihood of various bottleneck scenarios, andshow, in the context of what is known about therecent demographic history of this population, that there are credible scenarios for abottleneck driven by hunting pressure in the1960s that could account for the lack ofvariation at this locus.  相似文献

We isolated nine new microsatellites for the deep-sea fish Coryphaenoides rupestris. These loci are highly polymorphic, with allele number ranging from 14 to 42 and heterozygosity ranging from 0.647 to 0.965. Four of these loci also amplified in C. brevibarbis.  相似文献

The efficient investment of resources and effort into conservation strategies depends on the accurate identification of management units. At the same time, understanding the processes by which population structure evolves requires an understanding of the conditions under which panmixia may exist. Here, we study a species with an unusual, apparently sex-biased pattern of distribution, and test the hypothesis that distribution processes associated with this pattern (for example, congregating at a single dominant spawning site or periodic mixing during reproduction) could lead to panmixia over a large geographic range. Using 13 microsatellite markers, we compared 393 blue hake (Antimora rostrata) from 11 sample sites across a geographic range of over 3000 km, and found no evidence of population structure. We estimated current effective population size and found it to be large (∼15 000) across the sampled area. In addition, we used simulation models to test expectations about demographic correlation among populations and our ability to detect relevant levels of gene flow. All data were consistent with the interpretation of long-range panmixia.  相似文献

Recent studies using ancient DNA have been instrumental in advancing understanding of the impact of Holocene climate change on biodiversity. Ancient DNA has been used to track demography, migration and diversity, and is providing new insights into the long-term dynamics of species and population distributions. The Holocene is key to understanding how the past has impacted on the present, as it bridges the gap between contemporary phylogeographic studies and those with inference on Pleistocene patterns, based on ancient DNA studies. Here, we examine the major patterns of Holocene faunal population dynamics and connectivity; highlighting the dynamic nature of species and population responses to Holocene climatic change, thereby providing an 'analogue' for understanding potential impacts of future change.  相似文献

The evolution of diversity in the marine ecosystem is poorly understood, given the relatively high potential for connectivity, especially for highly mobile species such as whales and dolphins. The killer whale (Orcinus orca) has a worldwide distribution, and individual social groups travel over a wide geographic range. Even so, regional populations have been shown to be genetically differentiated, including among different foraging specialists (ecotypes) in sympatry. Given the strong matrifocal social structure of this species together with strong resource specializations, understanding the process of differentiation will require an understanding of the relative importance of both genetic drift and local adaptation. Here we provide a high‐resolution analysis based on nuclear single‐nucleotide polymorphic markers and inference about differentiation at both neutral loci and those potentially under selection. We find that all population comparisons, within or among foraging ecotypes, show significant differentiation, including populations in parapatry and sympatry. Loci putatively under selection show a different pattern of structure compared to neutral loci and are associated with gene ontology terms reflecting physiologically relevant functions (e.g. related to digestion). The pattern of differentiation for one ecotype in the North Pacific suggests local adaptation and shows some fixed differences among sympatric ecotypes. We suggest that differential habitat use and resource specializations have promoted sufficient isolation to allow differential evolution at neutral and functional loci, but that the process is recent and dependent on both selection and drift.  相似文献

Genetic diversity provides the raw material for populations to respond to changing environmental conditions. The evolution of diversity within populations is based on the accumulation of mutations and their retention or loss through selection and genetic drift, while migration can also introduce new variation. However, the extent to which population growth and sustained large population size can lead to rapid and significant increases in diversity has not been widely investigated. Here, we assess this empirically by applying approximate Bayesian computation to a novel ancient DNA dataset that spans the life of a southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina) population, from initial founding approximately 7000 years ago to eventual extinction within the past millennium. We find that rapid population growth and sustained large population size can explain substantial increases in population genetic diversity over a period of several hundred generations, subsequently lost when the population went to extinction. Results suggest that the impact of diversity introduced through migration was relatively minor. We thus demonstrate, by examining genetic diversity across the life of a population, that environmental change could generate the raw material for adaptive evolution over a very short evolutionary time scale through rapid establishment of a large, stable population.  相似文献

The guigna (Leopardus guigna) is the smallest and most-restricted New World cat species, inhabiting only around 160,000 km2 of temperate rain forests in southern South America and is currently threatened by habitat loss, fragmentation and human persecution. We investigated phylogeographic patterns of genetic diversity, demographic history and barriers to gene flow with 116 individuals sampled across the species geographic range by analyzing 1,798 base pairs of the mtDNA (496 bp HVSI region, 720 bp NADH-5 gene, 364 bp from 16S gene and 218 bp from ATP-8 gene) and 15 microsatellite loci. Mitochondrial DNA data revealed a clear phylogeographic pattern with moderate separation between northern and southern Chilean populations supporting recognized subspecific partitions based on morphology. A recent demographic expansion was inferred for the southern-most group (San Rafael Lake), presumably due to the complete coverage of this area during the last glacial period, 28000–16000 years BP. Geographical barriers such as the Andes Mountains and the Chacao Channel have partially restricted historic and more-recent gene flow and the Chiloé Island population has diverged genetically since being separated from the mainland 7000 years BP. This is the first study of the genetic structure of this threatened species throughout its whole geographic range.  相似文献
